ELNEC - BackgroundELNEC - Background
• The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) project began in the year 2000 as a national education initiative to improve end-of-life care in the United States,
• The project provides undergraduate and graduate nursing faculty, CE providers, staff development educators,, and other nurses with training in end-of-life care so they can teach this essential information to nursing students and practicing nurses. Specialty areas include: pediatrics, oncology, critical care, geriatrics and long term care

ELNEC CURRICULUMELNEC CURRICULUM
• The curriculum was developed through the work of nationally recognized palliative care experts with extensive input from an advisory board and reviewers.
• Each curriculum is revised annually based on participant recommendations and new advances in the field, and is modified for each distinct audience. The curriculum reflects AACN's 1998 publication “Peaceful Death: Recommended Competencies and Curricular Guidelines for End-of-Life Nursing Care.”
• The curriculum was developed through the work of nationally recognized palliative care experts with extensive input from an advisory board and reviewers.

Guadalajara, Mexico was the site of the first ELNEC course presented in Latin America. The initiative was the result of efforts by Dr. Sergio Conti (Hospice de La Frontera - Tijuana) and Ms Beatriz Montes de Oca, RN, (Dir., Hospice Cristina - Guadalajara City). A group of nurses under the leadership of Roger Strong, RN, APN, PhD (San Diego Hospice), traveled to Guadalajara to teach the ELNEC curriculum to nurses from all parts of Mexico. The course also included presentations on the progress of palliative care programs in Mexico.
