From The Principal

Dear Parents

At Rowville Primary School we focus on the development of the whole child and we believe that there should be an equal focus on social /emotional learning and academic learning. Our four values are

Respect, Perseverance, Responsibility and Pride. During term one we are focusing on our core value of Respect.

It was with great pride that I listened to our 2018 School Captains and Vice Captains deliver their introductory speeches at our first Monday assembly.

My name is Lily. I am one of your School Captains for 2018.

I am so excited to be one of your leaders for this year and i would like to introduce myself.

I am an eleven year old girl and in my family I have my mum, my dad, my brother Henry and a new addition, my baby brother Darcy, who was born a week ago. I love reading, netball, music, singing, bike riding, cooking, having fun and helping others. If you see me around please feel free to say hi.

I would now like to talk about pride, which is one of our school values.

Pride can be

a feeling of self-respect or personal worth; or

happiness with yourself or another persons achievements .

We can demonstrate pride in our school by

keeping our school book neat and tidy,

keeping our school grounds clean,

wearing our school uniform correctly

and most importantly having pride in ourselves.

To finish off I would like to let you know my motto for 2018 which is "we can.....we will" so lets make 2018 a great year.

Hello my name is Seth and I’m proud to announce that I am one of the School Captains for 2018.

I would like to tell you all a bit about myself.

I am 11 years old and live with my mum Shelby and my dad Clint.

I have a brother Nate who is 9 years old and in year 4.

Over the past 7 years at Rowville Primary School, I have participated in a range of activities including Athletics, Cross Country, Hoop Time, Swimming Sports and the School Production.

My main hobby away from school is sport.

I currently play for Glen Waverley Rovers in the under 12’s and was lucky enough to be part of their 2017 Premiership side.

I am part of the leadership group at my football club, a role that I take very seriously and I am proud that I was chosen by my fellow teammates.

During the summer months I play basketball for the Rowville Rockets and enjoy water sports especially wakeboarding at our caravan at Lake Eildon.

I have spent time during the Christmas break with my Grandma who is the Principal of a Primary School.

To me, responsibility is being accountable for my actions and leading by example.

On behalf of the leadership group Lily, Cedric, Georgia and myself I look

forward to making our school the best it can be.

Hi my name is Georgia and I am one of the Vice School Captains for 2018. I have been at Rowville Primary School for about three years. Along my journey I have made new friends, improved in my work and have had fun too. For some of you who don't know me I am a very sporty girl. I attend at least three different after school activities such as Basketball, Swimming, Little Athletics and soon I am starting Gymnastics.

I also follow all the school values that are Perseverance, Responsibility, Pride, and Respect. One of the school values that I will be talking about today is Perseverance. Perseverance means not giving up and always trying your hardest to succeed.

An example of Perseverance is running a few hours each week to get ready for a big running event. Another example is also studying really hard for a big maths exam. I also persevere in a lot of things as well. I persevere in all my sports, my work, and many more things.

I hope that you all have a wonderful year and show all of the School values.

From The Assistant Principal…

Welcome to the new school year. I hope all families had a relaxing holiday break and are ready for an exciting year of learning ahead. I would also like to welcome our new families to Rowville Primary School this year. I would like to extend a special welcome to our wonderful Foundation students who started last Wednesday. It is great to see so many smiling faces, ready to learn and begin their primary school education on the right foot.

This Thursday evening we invite all families to come along to our ‘Welcome to School BBQ and Parent Information Night’ to meet our teachers, learn about the expectations and routines for your child’s year level, key dates for the year and how you can support your child at home with their learning. Partnerships between home and school are important and at Rowville Primary School, we are strengthening our avenues to communicate effectively and work together with our families to support the learning and wellbeing of all students.

Here are the Parent Information Session times:

5.30pm – Foundation

5.45pm – Year 1

6.00pm – Year 2

6.15pm – Year 3

6.30pm – Year 4

6.45pm – Year 5

7.00pm – Year 6

These sessions will take place in one of the year level classrooms and parents will have an opportunity to visit their child’s classroom and meet their 2018 teacher. We will be providing sausages, hamburgers and veggie burgers from 5.45pm – 6.45pm, which will be served outside the canteen area. Team and co-operative games will be happening between 6pm -7 pm on the running track supervised by our PE teachers. We look forward to seeing you there.

My name is Cedric and I will be one of your Vice School Captains for 2018. A few important things you may like to know about me is that I love basketball, singing and helping others. I am a big brother to a bit cheeky but lovely three-year-old sister. My Mum and Dad are very supportive in all the things I’m passionate about. Apart from this the main thing my family taught me is the importance of respect.

Even the littlest thing deserves respect. Taking care of our environment by conserving and protecting it is an example of respect. Respecting our Teachers is a very important thing in our education. This means that we know how to Value all their effort and patience to help us learn and grow more. Another thing is just by saying thank you or good morning to our elders shows that we respect them.

One of my greatest experiences of respect and being respected is that when I joined a new basketball team. We have different races, schools and abilities, but since we respected these differences we managed to work as a team and also learnt a lot from each other.

From a little kid until now I will never ever forget what I’ve always

believed in to ‘Treat everyone or anything how you would like to be

treated.’

Nominations for School Council open on Friday 9 February 2018. Nomination forms will be available at the office and on Compass from Friday 9th February. Completed nomination forms are due before 4.00pm on Friday 16 February 2018. Being a member of school council presents parents with an opportunity to be involved in the governance of our school. The functions of a school council are outlined in the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 and include:

establishing the broad direction and vision of the school within the school's community

participating in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan

approving the annual budget and monitoring expenditure

developing, reviewing and updating school policies

raising funds for school-related purposes

maintaining the school’s grounds and facilities

entering into contracts (such as for cleaning or construction work)

reporting annually to the school community and to the Department

creating interest in the school in the wider community

informing itself of and taking into account the views of the community

regulating and facilitating the afterhours use of school premises and grounds

operating a children’s service at the school or other premises

controlled by the Minister.

There are vacancies on school council for parents. I invite members of the parent community to nominate to be a member of School Council or to come and speak with me if they require further information.

A very warm welcome back to school to all students and their families for 2018!

Friends of Rowville Primary School (FORPS) has prepared a calendar of lots of fun and exciting events for this year including a

Walkathon, Disco, FTG Motorgroup Great Community Raffle, Chocolate Drive, Bunnings BBQ plus the most important events

on the ‘FORPS 2018 Calendar of Events’ - the Mother’s & Father’s Day stalls.

Are you wondering how you can be involved? Who are FORPS and what do we do?

We are a small group of parents who volunteer our time to help raise money for the students at our school and improve the

school spirit and sense of community by bringing people together. All funds raised directly benefit our school. FORPS

fundraising has enabled the school to establish the junior sports precinct, purchase computers, install the running track and

soccer pitch, build the pirate ship playground and even help our aerobics teams to compete interstate.

The role of FORPS is to provide a means for parents or guardians of current and past students to:

- Develop friendships within the school community - Support the school by improving the quality of resources available through effective fundraising activities - Enjoy a greater involvement with the school

In 2017, the activities and events run by FORPS generated over $20,000. As well as fundraising, we also assist and support

the school, behind the scenes as required.

FORPS usually have a regular monthly meeting on a Monday at 7.30pm. Our first meeting is in the staffroom on Monday

12th February @ 7.30pm, when we will need to elect a new President and Vice President, otherwise, the 2018 Calendar of

Events cannot proceed. Come along to our very casual meetings, join in and share your ideas.

We urge you to consider a position on the committee for 2018 or you may like to manage only one event. No experience is

necessary, just a willingness to participate in the best interest of the school community. If you are interested in nominating

for a position on the committee; register your attendance or finding out more about what your involvement will entail,

please contact FORPS via forps@rowvilleps.vic.edu.au.

Second hand Uniform Shop News

Rowville Primary School Second Hand Uniform Shop

The second hand uniform shop is open every Wednesday from

2.30pm – 3:20pm. It is located adjacent to the Foundation

classrooms.

Our in-house second hand uniform shop sells donated second hand

school uniform items. If you have uniform items you would like to donate, please

forward them to the school office. The shop is staffed by a parent volunteer.

Head Lice A reminder to parents to regularly check your children's hair for eggs and live head lice. The Department of Health’s recommendations are as follows:

The easiest and most effective way to find head lice is to use conditioner and comb weekly to check for head lice and if detected treat with a commercial treatment available from pharmacies. This includes: Step 1. Comb hair conditioner onto dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around.

Step 2. Thoroughly comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth head lice comb.

Step 3. Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue.

Step 4. Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs.

Step 5. Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least four or five times.

Step 6. If lice or eggs are found, the person should be treated.

Step 7. Retreat hair in seven days or follow instructions on the packaging of the treatment or from your health care professional

Step 8. Notify the teacher of school office confidentially if head lice is detected.

1st September to 30th April School Uniform Hat to be worn.

Part of our Sun Smart Policy at Rowville Primary School is that students are to wear the official school uniform, wide brimmed hat everyday, when outdoors from 1st September to the 30th April. Students are also encouraged to apply sunscreen (SPF 30 + or above, 20 minutes prior to outdoor activity) provided by parents. Please place the students name on the sunscreen container. Please ensure your children to have their hat at school each day. Hats are available from our uniform supplier Klad Sport, 8 Macro Court, Rowville.
