Basic Knotting Techniques

Before starting the bracelets you should learn and practise two simple knotting techniques:

Forward Knot

1. Cut 2 lengths of different coloured thread about 20cm in length. In this example we have used blue and pink thread. Join the threads together at one end with a simple knot.

2. Starting with the blue thread on the left, lay it across the top of the pink thread on the right.

3. Next, loop the blue thread under the pink thread and pull upwards through the gap. Carefully pull the thread tight to create the knot.

4. Repeat the exact same process again to create a double knot.

Backward Knot1. This knot is the reverse of the forward knot. Start with the pink thread (on the right). Lay the thread across the top of the blue thread on the left.

2. Loop the pink thread under the blue thread and pull upwards through the gap to create a knot.

3. Repeat this process to create a double knot.

Starting Your Bracelet:

1. To start your bracelet, measure and cut the thread to the desired length given for each new project.

2. Separate the strings into two groups.

3. Knot both groups of strings together as close to one end as you can.

To make learning the knotting technique easier, use the same colours as the grid. After this project, you will have all the skills you need to complete any of the projects in this booklet.

1. Measure and cut 7 pieces of light blue thread, each 50cm long. Then cut one length of dark pink thread, 3metres long.

2. Follow ‘Starting your bracelet’ instructions on page 6 to prepare the thread ready for knotting.

3. Using the pink thread make a forward knot around the fi rst blue thread (1). Pull tight. Remember to do double knots as the diagram shows.

and use a piece of tape to hold

it together.

4. Now make forward knots with the pink thread around blue (2) and (3), then forward knot around blue (4).

This joins the bracelet together, so pull it tight.

5. Next, forward knot with the pink thread around the rest of the blue threads (5),(6),(7) to complete your fi rst row.

If completed correctly, the pink thread should now be on the far right hand side and all the blue threads in the same order (1-7) slotted into your bracelet maker. All your knots should be pink!

6. For your second row, repeat the process again, but this time do backward knots with the pink thread around all blue threads from (7-1). Don’t forget to pull each knot tight.

REMEMBER:

If you are starting the row with the

pink thread on the left hand side, the

pink thread always does forward knots

and the blue backward knots. If you

are starting the row on the right hand

side, the pink thread always does

backward knots and the blue thread

forward knots.

11. When you have fi nished the ‘E’, follow the grid to make another heart. Following the heart, knot two rows in pink before carrying on to fi nish your bracelet.

12. To fi nish, separate the strands into two bunches. Knot together, then plait down the strands for 6-8cm as you did to begin your bracelet. Knot to fi nish and trim off any excess.

In the back of this book you will fi nd some grids with designs for you to try by following the steps in this project. There are also some blank grids so you can create your very own designs.

Project 2 - I LOVE MUSIC

I LOVE MUSIC MESSAGE BRACELET

Make fun symbols to show your friends what you love! Try this design, then create your own message using the blank grids at the back of this book.

1. Choose 2 different colours of thread. Take one colour, measure and cut 10 pieces, each 50cm long. With the other colour you need to cut one length, 5metres long.

The 10 shorter lengths will be the colour of the symbols on your bracelet and the 4 metre length will be the background colour.

2. Follow ‘Starting your bracelet’ instructions on page 6 to prepare the thread ready for knotting. Remember this time you have 10 short lengths and 1 long length.

The technique for making this bracelet is the same as in project 1, but with the 3 extra strands your bracelet will be much wider.

3. Start your bracelet off by knotting three rows with the background colour (the long thread) and then get started on the design.

Have fun creating your own messages, put together letters, hearts, musical notes and more to make stylish one-off bracelets for yourself and friends!

If you have a really long name,

you might like to spell out your

nickname or your initials. If you

are doing a bracelet longer than

the examples you will need to use

longer lengths of thread.

Personalise bracelets with your name, your initials, or the name of your favourite pop star!

1. Use the alphabet grid on page 16 to spell out your name and start knotting.

2. Choose 2 different colours of thread. Take one colour, measure and cut 8 pieces, each 50cm long. With the other colour you need to cut one length, 5metres long.

3. Follow ‘Starting your bracelet’ instructions on page 6 to prepare the thread and start knotting.

Once you have knotted 2 rows of your background colour you can begin on your name.

Project 4 - ROCK

The font for this bracelet is slightly different, but the technique for knotting the bracelet is the same.

1. Choose 2 different colours of thread. Take one colour, measure and cut 10 pieces, each 50cm long. With the other colour you need to cut one length, 5metres long.

2. Follow ‘Starting your bracelet’ from page 6, then use the grid on page 16 to start knotting. You’ll soon have a cool ‘ROCK’ bracelet to wear and show your friends!

We have put the whole alphabet in the back of this booklet so you can spell out lots of names and fun words.

You can also have fun using this knotting technique to create colourful bands with fun patterns.

Try some of our designs from the back of this booklet or create your own.

Stack them next to other bracelets, or wear them on their own to make a colourful statement.

Now you have gained the skill of knotting, you can use the alphabets and symbols in the back of this booklet to create your very own designs. Use the colourful threads to bring your creations alive!

Great to give to friends as personalised gifts, or wear them yourself!
