We set a record for gift and cash donations and had over 420 guests. Kudos to our Alumni and Advancement Office, including Carolyn Korenic, Beth Detec, Kathy Conlan, Molly Faloon, and Laura Kelty. They attended to every detail and were instrumental in the night’s success. And, we couldn’t have done it without our students. Thank you to the Student Ambassadors who donated their time and talents. We again anticipate a profit of $100,000, which will support the students of Ursuline. Both the Home and School Association and Athletic Booster Club are looking for parents who would be interested in taking on a leadership role in one of these two long-standing parent organizations. The Home and School Association annually pro- vides funds to support class dinners, awards day, teacher appreciation, and numerous school projects, including technology enhancements and school renovations. The Booster Club provides direct support to athletic teams for new uniforms, equip- ment, and camp sponsorships. If you are interested, please call me at 330-744-4563. The Ursuline Family celebrated Mass on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 to honor the Patron Saint of Ursuline High School, Saint Ursula. Saint Ursula, who lived during the tenth century, was martyred for her faith. Saint Angela Merici prayed to Saint Ursula and named her company of female followers after Saint Ursula as a tribute to her courage and steadfast faith. During the Saint Ursula celebration, fourteen seniors and three faculty members were commissioned as Eucharistic Ministers and the 2017 Distin-guished Alumni, Cindy Herubin Francisco ‘83 and John Herubin ‘80 were honored. In support of Right to Life Month, a collection of baby items was presented during the offertory.

The Ursuline High School Speech and Debate Team is off to a great start this season. With the biggest team in recent his-tory, forty members strong, the team has already begun to earn awards, bids to the state and national competitions and sweep-stakes points. The team is coached by Mrs. Joan Williams, a mem-ber of the Ohio Speech League Hall of Fame. The Ursuline Speech and Debate Team has been ranked in the top 10% of speech and debate teams nationwide by the NFL. Listed to the right are the results of the first three Speech and Debate Tournaments for the 2017-2018 season. The season continues until March when the state championships are held in Sylvania, Ohio and is capped off in June with the national competition in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Ursuline High School Thanksgiving Collection

Ursuline High School sponsored a Thanksgiving drive for the 12 families who live at Beatitude House on Youngstown’s North Side. The Beatitude House is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and serves under-privileged women and children. Collection boxes were located in the religion classrooms and in the Italian classroom. Ursuline received the following list of needed items from Beatitude House: dish soap, all-purpose cleaner, Clorox bleach, liquid laundry detergent, toilet bowl cleaner and brushes and toilet paper. While these may not seem like the traditional needs of the Thanksgiving holiday, Beatitude House specifically identifed these items due to a great need. Food items may be purchased with government assis-tance, while cleaning items are not covered under the government assistance plan. If you have any questions about our collection, you may direct them to Interact Club Advisor, Miss Carolyn Korenic, at [email protected].

Ursuline Day of Service

Ursuline High School hosted the annual “Ursuline Day of Service” on Saturday, October 28, 2017. A rainy and cold morning did not stop our community-minded students! Many students and faculty members joined together to help the following local service agencies: Beatitude House, Casa Madre (Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry), Know Your Neighborhood Coalition, Dorothy Day House, Oh Wow Children’s Museum, The Diocese of Youngstown Missionary Project, as well as assisting at our own school with various projects. Students gathered at the conclusion of the day to share a meal together prepared by classmates and share stories of their service experiences. The Day of Service was sponsored by the Ursuline High School Stu-dents of Stewardship (S.O.S.) organization.

Kudos To......-junior Owen Lewis (left) who recently partici-pated in a weekend visit to The United States Naval Academy. Called “the funniest farce ever written, Noises Off presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Doors slamming, on and off stage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play. The show will take the stage on Friday, December 15 and Saturday, December 16 at 7 p.m. as well as Sunday, December 17 at 2 p.m.. Tickets can be purchased prior to the show by contacting Mrs. Lisa Devlin, Fall Play Director, at 330-744-4563 or [email protected]. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students. pictures, roses and concessions will be sold. Tickets may also be purchased at the box office on the day of the show.

School closings due to inclement weather will be announced on local TV stations. Parents and students will also receive a text alert via the school app. If you do not have app login credentials, please contact Maggie Matune, Assistant Principal, by calling 330-744-4563 or emailing [email protected]. The app, titled Ursuline Irish, may be downloaded from the iTunes store or the Google Play store and is free of charge.
