The Legacy. In 2003, Lakeview Hospital continued its legacy ofcommitment and vision by providing the best possible healthcare to itspatients, and by serving the community it shares with you.

Commitment. It’s a word whose meaning is not taken lightly at LakeviewHospital. The community has entrusted us to meet its healthcare needs, andwe have been meeting that responsibility for 124 years. We are committedto providing compassionate care, quality customer service, and health andwellness education to those we serve. We pledge to continue offering thefinest programs to the community, now and into the future.

We pride ourselves on serving the community.

Some of the services we offer to our community

include cholesterol screenings, blood drives and

more. We participated in the Stillwater Schools’

SADD program and in an initiative to help reduce

teen tobacco use. In 2003, over 900 kindergarten

students from four school districts in Minnesota and

Wisconsin visited Lakeview’s Teddy Bear Clinic.

The Teddy Bear Clinic helps acclimate children to a

hospital setting, in hopes that they will be more

comfortable should they ever become a patient themselves.

THE

COMMITMENT

LEGACY

Page 3: 74218 HEALTHVIEWS - Lakeview Hospital

Welcome to the Annual

Report issue of Health Views! Thank you

for your support of Lakeview Hospital

during the past year. It is our mission to

deliver superior quality service in

cooperation with others to meet the diverse

healthcare needs of individuals,

families and

communities

of the St.

Croix Valley.

We continue

to follow that

mission each

and every day.

Our measure

of success lies

within our

d a y - t o - d a y

activities, in

the care we provide to our patients and the

community.

Lakeview continues to stand out as a leader

in orthopedics. We have the best

orthopedic outcomes in the state of

Minnesota. With the advent of MIS

(minimally invasive surgery) for hip and

knee replacements, our patients are

benefiting from shorter hospital stays,

faster recovery times, and less pain.

In our commitment to offer the latest

advances in healthcare, this year we added

new services, including CT heart scans,

virtual colonography and cardiac rehab

phases 3 and 4, just to name a few. We are

enthusiastic about what the future holds for

Lakeview Hospital, including digital

mammography and a new community

wellness initiative.

On behalf of the entire staff and Board of

Directors of Lakeview Hospital, we want to

thank you for giving us the privilege of

serving you and your families. We look

forward to meeting your healthcare needs

for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Robertson, CEO/Administrator

After a thorough analysis, Lakeview Hospital and theStillwater Medical Group agreed that the needs of thecommunity are better served by providing urgent care inthe clinic setting, versus the hospital setting. Urgent care(which differs from Lakeview’s emergency service) isappropriate for minor illnesses or injuries including flu, sprains, cuts and infections. Urgent care makes highquality, cost-effective healthcare available in the eveningsand on weekends when most physician offices are closed.Urgent care services are conveniently located at theStillwater Medical Group clinic adjacent to LakeviewHospital at 921 South Greeley Street in Stillwater.

“We are thrilled to offer after hours walk-in services toour patients for minor illness and injury treatment”, saysGene Stringer, MD, Medical Director for urgent care.“Urgent care is an alternative to emergency room visits innon-life threatening situations.” Stillwater MedicalGroup’s own family practice and pediatric physicians staff

urgent care. Laboratory and x-ray services are availableon-site. No appointment is necessary and most insuranceplans are accepted.

Lakeview is pleased with the programs we provide the

Stillwater School District. Lakeview nutritionists work one

on one and in the classroom with junior and senior high

students to promote healthy eating and nutrition. We also

created an after school exercise and nutrition enrichment

program at Oak-Land Junior High. Lakeview Hospital partners

with other metro-east hospitals in an Explorer program for high

school students who are interested in healthcare careers.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Patient safety has always been a priority at Lakeview. Lakeview Hospital supports

and participates in the JCAHO ( Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare

Organizations) national safety initiative “Speak Up” campaign and JCAHO’s seven

national patient safety goals.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Lakeview Hospital’s Diabetic Education program continues to flourish. Individual

visits and group education were both up 6% in 2003. A diabetes support group was

formed. Continuous glucose monitoring systems were purchased and are now in full

use. This monitoring is useful in identifying problems the patient may not be aware of.

In addition, an insulin pump therapy program was initiated.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Volunteers contributed over 23,000 hours of their time to

Lakeview this year. Volunteers work in the gift shop, at

reception desks, in the Teddy Bear Clinic, in Hospice and in

many other departments. Some volunteers deliver newspapers

to patients; others become part of the team in surgery by

escorting patients and communicating with families; and still

others hand knit baby caps for each newborn.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

As a regional hospital, we continue to sponsor support groups for the community,

including adult and youth grief groups, a diabetes support group, an ostomy support group,

a breast cancer support group, an Alzheimer’s group and a fibromyalgia support group.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Part of Lakeview’s mission is to keep the community informed about health and

wellness issues. We are proud of our continuing “Healthy, Wellthy & Wise” series of

wellness classes, dealing with topics from teen depression to perimenopause to fitness.

In addition to our series, in 2003 we also offered presentations by healthcare providers

on minimally invasive (MIS) joint replacement surgery, colorectal cancer and plastic

surgery. A Men’s Dinner focused on virtual colonography and CT heart scans. Good

Morning Talks, a presentation for seniors, provided information on health and wellness

topics at Boutwells Landing.

In cooperation with the

Stillwater Medical Group,

Lakeview began a pilot

PrescriptionAssistance Program.

This program helps

qualifying patients receive

low-cost or free

prescription medication

through pharmaceutical

company programs or

government programs. For

more information on this

program, please talk with

your Stillwater Medical

Group physician during

your next visit.

Most patientsrealize a

savings ofapproximately

$250 permonth in

medicationcosts.

Lakeview offers its employees many educationalopportunities, including comprehensive orientation,

competency testing, continuing education and

tuition reimbursement. The annual Nursing Skills

Fair was held in November with 212 RNs, LPNs

and nursing assistants attending. This mandatory

event helps our nursing staff stay atop of current care

practices and tests their competency, which means

our patients always receive the best care possible.

The Lakeview Auxiliarycontinues a wonderful

partnership with the

Hospital by providing monies

for healthcare scholarships

within our community, as

well as funding a number of healthcare initiatives for

the community. Born to Read is one such program

that focuses on the importance of stimulating a

child’s brain development.

2003A N N U A L R E P O R T

Vision. Leaders always have a clear-cut vision. Lakeview Hospital’s vision has continually focused onthe needs of the community. We fulfill that vision by using the latest in medical technology, andrecruiting highly trained, competent and compassionate employees. Lakeview has a tradition ofproviding quality services that lead to the highest patient satisfaction ratings in the metro area.

VISION

Lakeview Hospital continues to have the best

orthopedic outcomes in the state of Minnesota. The

success of Lakeview Hospital and St. Croix

Orthopaedics’ minimally invasive surgery (MIS)

joint replacements were featured in a segment of

KARE-11 News in

April. As the first

hospital in the state to

perform MIS hip andknee replacements,

we continue to marvel at

the dramatically positive

patient results, including

shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Regional physicians well respected in the field of

pain management now offer specialized advanced

pain therapy to patients of Lakeview Hospital’sPain Clinic. Leading-edge pain therapies include

radio frequency oblation (which targets nerve tissue)

and spinal stenosis (which uses electrical impulses to

regulate pain signals).

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

The Physical Medicine department began an

innovative lymphedema therapy program, making it

one of only a few healthcare centers in the Twin

Cities area to offer this successful form of treatment.

They also began a women’s health program with a

focus on incontinence and pelvic pain.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

The Women’s Center of

Lakeview was certified for

water births in 2003. Water

birthing is a safe and effective

alternative that helps mothers

cope with labor pain; it also

offers more control to the

mother during labor.

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation expanded services this

year to include Cardiac Rehab Phases 3 and 4, a physician

approved maintenance exercise program. This is in addition to

our already outstanding programs in Phases 1 and 2 and our

pulmonary rehabilitation program. Patients work with exercise

physiologists and respiratory therapists to set goals and work

toward a healthier lifestyle.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Lakeview continues to offer integrative medicine therapies to its patients. This

program, which has been in existence at Lakeview since 1998, offers aromatherapy

through the use of pure essential oils, an art gallery, massages for families of patients

and employees, artwork in patient and procedure rooms and an in-house relaxation

television channel.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Our Imaging Services department continues to

update and expand services, offering patients the

newest technologies available. This year we acquired

a GE Lunar Prodigy bone densitometer (for bone

density testing). We also added CT heart scans and

virtual colonography to our repertoire of diagnostic

imaging services. These advanced exams offer the

most complete information to physicians and

patients that current technology can offer.

…We continue to look forward to the future. We are excited about our new digital

mammography services. We are one of only a few hospitals in the metro area to offer

this new technology, which offers clearer images and computer-assisted detection. We

will be introducing a community initiative on fitness and healthy eating, focusing on the

national epidemic of obesity and lack of physical activity. Our Good Morning Talks will

adopt a broader scope towards total wellness, addressing the physical, social,

psychological and spiritual aspects of our lives. This is just a small sampling of what

Lakeview’s future holds. We look forward to sharing even more exciting opportunities

with our community.

Our commitment to meeting the needs of the community, our vision of offering the

finest healthcare, and our legacy of being the best in patient satisfaction will

continue…
