Holiday Travel WisdomIf you’ll be traveling by auto this holiday season, be sure to consider these safety tips: • Have the car serviced and checked out well before starting. Tell others where you will
be and when to expect your return. • Don’t forget the cellphone charger. • Carry jumper cables or a battery charger, a big flashlight and some hand tools. Have an
empty one-gallon gas can, paper towels and disposable ponchos in your vehicle. Bring waterand snacks for yourself and your passengers.

Germs love to hide in these placesYou might think your bathroom is the germiest place in your home. You’d be wrong, according
to the MSN website. Watch out for these locations that have lots more germs than your toilet: • Cutting boards. To keep them free of germs, don’t just rinse them in the sink. Wash your
cutting board in water and dish soap, then soak in water mixed with bleach—two teaspoons forplastic, two tablespoons for wood.
• Dish cloths. These have everything that’s necessary for bacteria to thrive: warmth, moisture,and organic material from food. Wash them often on a hot cycle and tumble-dry them in a dryer.
• Smartphones. You take them everywhere, including the bathroom, and you usually don’twash your hands every time you pick yours up. Clean your phone with a cloth soaked in asolution of 60% water and 40% rubbing alcohol. Wring the cloth out well so that the moisturedoesn’t damage your phone.
• Keyboards. Computer keyboards can be covered with 20,500 more bacteria than theaverage toilet seat. Clean your keyboard with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol while it’sunplugged. Use compressed air to get rid of dirt around the keys.
• Steering wheels. You probably don’t wear gloves when you drive, which means you’recoating your wheel with germs and bacteria. Clean your wheel and other parts of your carregularly.

Barking dogs and ambu-lance sirens can interferewith a good night’s sleep,
but so can a number of physi-cal conditions. Because sleepis essential to your health, getfamiliar with these commondisorders and conditions thatprevent restful shuteye:
• Teeth grinding. Technicallyknown as “bruxism,” grindingyour teeth can cause pain inthe jaw, as well as annoywhomever you’re sleepingwith. It’s often associated withanxiety and stress. A mouthguard can reduce tooth abra-sion, so talk to your dentist.
• Sleep paralysis. Whiledrifting o+ to sleep, or wakingup, you may suddenly realizeyou’re unable to move your
body. The condition can go onfor several minutes. It happenswhen part of your brain is inREM sleep and it shuts downyour ability to move so youdon’t injure yourself duringdreams. It’s not dangerous—just unnerving.
• Obstructed sleep apnea.An obstruction in the upperairway can cut o+ oxygen for20-40 seconds as you sleep,preventing you from gettingthe rest you need. And youmay not even be aware of theproblem unless a partner no-tices your breathing di,culty.Treatment depends on the se-riousness of the condition; sur-gery is one option, but lifestylechanges such as losing weightand avoiding alcohol can also
be e+ective.• Night terrors. Not a night-
mare, but an intense sensationof fear that’s most common inchildren. Though scary for par-ents and kids alike, night ter-rors aren’t considereddangerous and usually don’tresult in any lost sleep.
• Restless leg syndrome. Anirresistible compulsion tomove parts of your body asyou’re trying to fall asleep, RLSis a neurological disorder thatcan a+ects your arms, torso,and even phantom limbs.Stretching or shaking yourlimbs can bring some relief;iron supplements may be ef-fective, but have your iron leveltested by your doctor beforetaking any pills.
Children’s chores lead toadult success
Kids usually hate doing chores, butit’s an important part of growing up.That’s what Julie Lythcott-Haims,author of How to Raise an Adult andformer dean of freshmen at StanfordUniversity, said in a 2015 interviewrecently reviewed on the Peoplemagazine website. “By making them do chores—
cleaning the dinner table, folding thelaundry—they realize ‘I have to dothe work of life in order to be part oflife,’” Lythcott-Haims says. Tech Insider says that children
who do chores grow up to be moreindependent at work. In particular,they’re good at spotting when theirco-workers are dealing with tasksthat are challenging. “If kids aren’t doing the dishes, it
means someone else is doing thatfor them,” says Lythcott-Haims.“And so they’re absolved of not onlythe work, but of learning that workhas to be done and that each one ofus must contribute for the [sake] ofthe whole.”
