From your Pastor…
I would like to continue our understanding of St. Paul’s definition of Love. Last weekend I wrote about love as being patient. Today, I would like to look at the relation-ship between love and service according to St. Paul. It happens to us that we get so busy in our own lives such that we can forget that we are called to serve oth-ers in love. In such circumstances, we can look to the reaction of Mary when she was called to be the mother
of God, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word” (Lk.1:38). And immediately she engaged in service by visiting the home of her pregnant cousin Elizabeth. Mary was imitating the call to service spoken about by her son, Jesus. Our Lord said, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” (Mt. 20:28). His authority came not because of his great preaching alone, but be-cause of his service to all people. The word service that St. Paul talks about is coming from chresto s which means a good person, one who shows his or her goodness by deeds. This kind of love expressed in service to the other person without regard to one’s one needs. Loving service is essential to community life. Serving one another makes for stronger marriage and family life as well as healthier parishes. A family can-not exist without service. I am grateful for the ways that so many of you serve your family members as well as our parish community. It is an inspiring expression of the love out-lined by St. Paul. Let us continue striving to serve one another unconditional-ly without expecting anything in return trusting that our actions give honor and glory to God. Sincerely, Rev. Miguel Gonza lez

A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today’s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Religious Education Program is in need of volunteers for the 2017-2018 school year. Catechists need to speak English and have had all their sacraments. All adult vol-unteers must go through a background check and attend the “Protecting God’s Chil-dren Workshop.”
Fr. Lopez is visiting us today to asks us to join their efforts to pro-vide food for the poor. Their mis-sion is to link the church of the First World with the church of the Third World in a manner that helps both the materially poor and the poor in spirit. The materially poor are served by local churches, clergy and lay leaders who have been empowered and supplied with goods by Food For The Poor. The poor in spirit are renewed by their relationship with and service to the poor through our direct min-istry of teaching, encouragement and prayer. Ultimately, we seek to bring both benefactors and recipients to a closer union with our Lord.
