SGVD President . . . Rita Aleman…909-284-2384…[email protected] Hello Members, This month of October is going to be very exciting for all. We have the Area B Conference at La Crescenta Woman’s Club on October 19th, Saturday. The program begins at 9:00, so registration will begin at 8:30am. There will be pastries in the morning with coffee and juice. The lunch will be catered. The program will include a, demonstration from Sonja Berg-Hults on how to use the technology that we have at our fingertips. She is very informative. We will also hear from Barbara Briley Beard and a visit from the California Federation of Women’s Clubs President Dori Kelsey. Come and join us as we meet our Sisters in Federation from Area B. Another special meeting will be the District Meeting on October 11th hosted by Pio Pico Women’s Club. Because October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I am asking that everyone attending the District meeting, wear something purple. The actual day of observance is October 24th, so we can take a group picture of support. Let everyone know that we will be observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month as well. So if you wish to wear PINK, please do so. It is really up to you! I attended the California Federation of Women’s Club State Board September 20-21st at the LAX Crowne Plaza Hotel. Joining me was Rosette Clippinger and Terry Perkins, each of us had meetings to attend. I attended the President’s meeting with our CFWC President and 14 District Presidents. My report was given on Saturday evening, almost the last one. It’s so nice to be the District President to the largest District group in California. Where other districts are having difficulty recruiting and retaining members, we continue to shine. There will be a mini LEADS seminar for ALL members interested in knowing more about leadership. This will be on October 29th Tuesday at Pio Pico Women’s Club. The program will begin promptly at 9:30am. Please see Toby Kahan’s Leadership Report for more information. The District Yearbooks will be handed out if you have not already picked yours up. The CFWC Yearbooks, 2019-2020 will be distributed as well. These were ordered by President’s and will be given to the Presidents. Marianne Jennings will be handing the hard drives and hard copies to those who paid in advance. Presidents, please make sure you are there to pick up your books. Please read the Chairman’s reports in this KEY newsletter because there is information regarding Fall Council November 8th at Downey Women’s Club and November will be here before you have a chance to get your Club Reservations in!!!! We have so much on and I wouldn’t want anyone to miss out. Share your Club with those you meet. Have an updated version of your clubs tri-fold or newsletter to hand to potential new members or guests. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Importance of Report Writing

They are the history of what your club did for a certain year. They document if how well the projects worked or didn’t work. They provide guidance for the next year to help your club determine which projects to continue and which to let go. They show the IRS that you are doing nonprofit work for your community, and that your group should keep your 501C3 status. Write their reports, pick your top projects that have the best stories to tell and that are the most interesting for all of us to hear about. Let us -- San Gabriel Valley District Clubs! shine As your district dean, I will be scheduling report-writing workshops. Also I am available to visit your clubs and help you in writing your reports. Just give me a call and I’ll be there! SGVD 2nd Vice President …Terry Perkins…909-89-7710

How to Announce Your Presence in Your Community Share your newsletter with the community. Drop a couple of copies off at the Chamber of Commerce, local beauty shops, dentists and doctor offices, community centers. Anywhere you can where people might stop and take a look. Your newsletter should contain things that your club is doing and sound fun and exciting –what event your club is participating in, what plans are on the horizon, what projects are your members working on –doing for your community, who received your scholarship awards, what items you are collecting for groups such as WINGS…. where is the next meeting/event--any special interest groups within your club. Have an active Webpage that is kept up to date, a Facebook page, Join your City Buzz site and neighboring sites…. Check to see if there are any free paper publishers who might print your announcements and events. Check to see if there are Bulletin Boards at stores, etc. where you could post announcements. Wear you club pin or carry a shopping bag with the Club/CFWC/GFWC displayed to encourage inquiries when you are standing in lines. Have a club business a card to hand them and carry a pad and pencil at all times to get their contact information. Carry a club trifold to hand out at local events. If you have a booth at a community event include a storyboard and a scrapbook of your accomplishments so the potential members can enjoy your volunteer spirit while they pause at your booth. Don’t forget to have membership applications and a sign-up sheet with pens so you can get in touch with them again. Always wear a smile, have a friendly and positive attitude.

Linda’s Tidbits Tidbit: Did you know when gifts are received it is protocol to send a hand written note at least within a week. People appreciate written notes like we did in the good old days, not an email or text. Tidbit: Did you know it is protocol to wear your name badge on your right and your club membership pin over your heart. Reason being…..think about when someone greets you or you greet someone and shake hands….that person as well as yourself (when shaking hands) will look toward that name badge. Tidbit: Did you know you do not approach the Head Table at District or club meetings. If you have something that needs to reach your President or someone else seated at the Head Table, then give the note to the President’s Aide, who will take it to the last person seated at the Head Table to pass along. No President’s Aide… then when delivering a note do the same as a President’s Aide would. Tidbit: Did you know when introducing those at the Head Table…you never say “I would like to introduce the Head Table”. Just remember a table is an object. Proper way “I would like to introduce those seated at the Head Table”. ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN … Esthela Torres de Siegrist …626-442-0354

“October: Ghosts, Witches, Goblins, and Trick or Treat!”

October (aka: All Hallow’s Eve) this year falls on Thursday, October 31. And, many of you will have kids coming to your door to “Trick or Treat.” This practice has changed. In past years, children really did “Tricks:” putting soap on the windows of those who didn’t offer a “Treat,” or throwing rotten tomatoes on the doorstep, etc. Today, most youngsters are totally unaware of the “Trick“ part. This year, when a child comes to your door, pretend to be scared or overwhelmed by their disguises, and compliment them on their costumes, and remind them to be safe. It is highly recommended to only give wrapped candy and not popcorn balls, fruit or cookies. Don[t forget to leave your porch jligh5s on! When the children return home after their journey, parents search through the “Trick or Treat” bags and discard any “suspicious’ items and items not securely wrapped. For those of you who have contact with children, there are a number of wonderful learning resources for sharing. CAUTION: ALWAYS, ALWAYS ensure that the children NEVER use the Internet alone, without an adult observing. Facebook has become a notorious weapon used by pedophiles to recruit children for sex trafficking. Go to millionkids.org and learn about the dangers of the Internet. A wonderfully safe, powerful online learning resource is the KHAN Academy. (khanacademy.org.) Totally safe, it offers thousands of lessons for children and youth (pre-K to

Page 8: 735 Windwood Drive Walnut, Ca 91789 October 2019 · US Mail: Pat Huffman . 3 SGVD President . . . Rita Aleman…909-284-2384…meritamom@msn.com Hello Members, This month of October

university) in mathematics, reading, language arts, and science, it is now sponsored by Bill Gates himself. He uses the KHAN Academy with his own children. Children from Pre-K through 12th grade in any school that HAS a PTA can enter the Annual California PTA’s Art Reflection Program. Go online to pta1.org and learn more about it. The theme for 2019-2029 is “Look Within.” The categories are: Dance/choreography; Film Production; Literature; Music Competition; Photography; and Visual Arts. And, Special Needs Children can enter. Check with your local school’s PTA and inquire about Reflections. There’s always a great need for judges. Thank about being one and why not BE ONE?????

Have a great, safe October. Don’t eat too much candy! “Trick or Treat!”

CHIPS for KIDS ………………….Mary Matson~909-418-0418 Hello Everyone: I hope that you all had a great summer and are ready to get back in the swing of things. I just want to let everyone know that we will again be helping the CHP with their toy drive for Christmas. We will be collecti9ng toys at our0 December District meeting. So start looking around for those good deals on toys, books, games, athletic balls and gift cards. Gift cards are for at least $10 each from McDonalds, Subway, Wal-Mart, Target etc. I know that all of you will make this another great year for our District Christmas giving. Thanks to all!!!!!! CONSERVATION………………….Gina Morales ~ 626-531-1535 Greetings, I'd like to share some basic recycling facts. Recycling can benefit your community and the environment. Benefits of Recycling: Recycling Creates Jobs Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators Conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials Saves energy Supports American manufacturing and conserves valuable resources.

Page 9: 735 Windwood Drive Walnut, Ca 91789 October 2019 · US Mail: Pat Huffman . 3 SGVD President . . . Rita Aleman…909-284-2384…meritamom@msn.com Hello Members, This month of October

The Steps to Recycling Materials: The three steps below, which create a continuous loop, are represented by the familiar recycling symbol. Step 1: Collection and Processing Step 2: Manufacturing Step 3: Purchasing New Products Made from Recycled Materials Recycling Creates Jobs: EPA released significant findings on the economic benefits of the recycling industry. This study analyzes the numbers of jobs, wages and tax revenues attributed to recycling. The study found that in a single year, recycling and reuse activities in the United States accounted for: 757,000 jobs $36.6 billion in wages; and $6.7 billion in tax revenues. This equates to 1.57 jobs, $76,000 in wages, and $14,101 in tax revenues for every 1,000 tons of materials recycled. So, next time you are about to throw away a plastic bottle, aluminum can, glass bottle or newspaper, stop and think about how you can be part of "Conservation". CRAFT CONTEST…… Marianne Jennings and Jeanne Long… (818) 398-7323 We are looking forward to all those lovely and unique crafts you have been working so hard on. They must have been "completed" in 2019 so get busy and wrap up those items and have them ready to turn in on Thursday, January 23, 2020. The location for this event has yet to be arranged but we will let you know as so we know. In the meantime, enjoy knowing that you could win a 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Ribbon or even an Honorable Mention. And the big winners receive Best of Show and Members Choice. The categories are listed in your SGVD Yearbook. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE…………………..Mavis Hansen …626-441-6231

It was great to see so many at our District Board meeting last Friday for our first meeting after summer break. A reminder that domestic violence never takes a break! What does your club have planned for helping women and their children? Does your club have a Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Chairman? If so, GOOD FOR YOU! If not, why not? This is truly not A difficult job. The most important responsibility is to share the information that you receive with the other members in your club. No $$, just your time and don’t we all volunteer our time? Isn’t this what we are all about? Community Volunteer Service? And let’s not forget that good feeling we get when helping others ! EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW HOW THEY CAN HELP INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT IT IS THE KEY TO KNOWING HOW TO HELP This chairman would like to know if your club has a Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Chairman and/or what activities or events you are planning. OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH Wear your purple ribbon to show support FYI: The Covina W.C. holds their DVAC meeting the third Monday of each month at noon and everyone is always welcome to attend. FUNDRAISING –FASHION SHOW…. Abbey Howell… (909) 348-3779 Thank you President Rita Aleman and the SGVD Executive Committee for your support of me in chairing this position. I give the District my solemn pledge to assist in making our 2020 Fashion Show an afternoon to long be remembered. Prior to the ending of my term as Fundraising Chairman, I will be announcing (2)-two additional Fundraising Project...Stay tuned! INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH……………....Tina Ly……626-234-7754.

In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, this article addresses the intersection of domestic violence and human trafficking, and shares my small role in helping to spread awareness about the global human trafficking crisis. Human trafficking takes on a variety of forms, and may intersect with domestic violence in multiple ways. For example, when an individual is trafficked by an intimate partner, family member, or other member of the household, domestic violence often also occurs. Additionally, domestic violence at home may become a 'push factor' that causes someone to become vulnerable to trafficking.1

Three years ago, I was one of 2,317 donors who made it possible for a human trafficking film to be completed. “Sisters for Sale” is an award-winning feature documentary that follows an engrossing investigation of the disappearance of two teenage girls, kidnapped from their homes in Sapa, Vietnam, and sold into marriage in China.

The film launched in May 2019, and as a donor, I received a limited-time opportunity to view it on my computer. The film moved me, shocked me, and taught me about the complex layers of family, duty, and power that continues to perpetuate this human trafficking crisis. A three-minute trailer can be viewed at this link vimeo.com/169616475 If your club is interested in holding a community screening, Katie Carriero at [email protected] can help you with the details. The documentary can be screened in English, French, German, Hmong, Italian, Spanish, or Vietnamese. Full background details about this documentary and various ways you can get involved can be found at humanearth.net/project/sisters-for-sale/ 1UNICEF USA End Trafficking Campaign Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking November 15, 2017 Hanna Cod https://www.unicefusa.org/stories/domestic-violence-and-human-trafficking/33601 LEADERSHIP CHAIRMAN…. Toby Kahan …909-720-3532 Attention All Members! Your Club President has received the LEADS Application by email and should be sharing it at your next club meeting. All clubs are encouraged to submit an applicant to SGVD by the November 8th District Board Meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity to get Leadership Training and every club would benefit if their candidate is selected. Plan to attend the SGVD Mini Leads Workshop on October 29th at the Pio Pico Woman's Clubhouse. See the flyer in this Key for details.

WOMEN MAKING HISTORY Women’s history is in the making each and every day, by each and every one of us. We are the history makers for our families, friends, neighbors, work associates and, of course, within the entire community in which we live and serve. We may not be the focus of an article in the local newspaper, let alone the New York Times, and we may not be interviewed on nationwide television for our accomplishments nor mentioned as a woman of history on an internet search. But, we each make a powerful impact within our personal realm. We leave behind our own story; our own footprint, our own amazing history.

Ladies, we are powerful in our own right and we certainly have many powerful women in the U.S. to inspire us and who act as our mentors. I recently read about the top 10 most powerful women in America and I want to share a bit of what I learned about each of them.*

1. Oprah Winfrey is a billionaire and one of the richest women in America. She had a show that was watched by millions and nationally syndicates. She is a woman who doesn’t only want money (who doesn’t) but wants to make a difference to the world. Everyone might not agree with her but everyone listens to her.

2. Indira Nooyi is the former CEO of PepsiCo and is well known for her leadership style.

She is also credited for her concern for health. She has not shied away from the fact that obesity is linked to the carbonated drink industry and a reason behind diabetes being so prevalent. Pepsi, together with Coca-Cola fund almost 100 health groups in America.

3. Melinda Gates is the co-founder of the world’s richest charitable foundation in history.

She is a women who has considerable focus on women and girls and has the capacity to influence decisions made in the name of gender. In a conference called by Angela Merkel, Ms Gates made an address and impression that none of the other women could have done.

4. Nancy Pelosi is one of the most powerful politicians in the US today. She was once the

Speaker of the house and is now the minority leader. She is the mover and shaker in the congress halls. She helps in creating strategies that will help in the advancement of the party. She is on the front line of her party’s publicity and advocacy.

5. Virginia Rometty is the Chairman, President and CEO of IBM and is the first woman to

head the company. She has been running the global company since 2012. She left General Motors to begin her career with IBM as a systems analyst and systems engineer and quickly climbed up the ranks obtaining management positions early in her career. She is active in women’s leadership and is a board member in a few organizations.

6. Diane Sawyer: There is the impression amongst TV viewers that is she is saying it then

it is most likely true and many people accept her authority over what she has chosen to be the topic of a particular day. Forbes ranked her as 23rd most powerful woman in the world and that was because if there is an important interview with someone like the President, expect Ms Sawyer to be asking questions.

7. Michelle Obama: Although being the first lady and the wife of the most powerful man

on Earth gave her leverage above all American women, we are talking vibes exuded by Michelle as a woman generally. To her credit, she is a graduate of Harvard and Princeton Universities. Her stance on various social matters has given her a respectable position in the American society. Many people have gone as far as demanding her active role in politics so that she could run for the next president. She is also the author of three books.

8. Ms. Wasserman Schultz is the chairperson of the Democratic National Party and is the

most influential person when it comes to determining the strategy of the party. She has become the face of the party and when she speaks, cameras are held still and people pay attention. She has a direct role in shaping the US policy and that makes her a powerful and influential lady of this time.

9. Sheryl Sandberg holds the reins of Facebook. Her decisions affect how people

communicate and interact with each other on Facebook. She is the author of the best-selling “Lean In” and is an advocate of women’s participation in practical life beyond their homes.

10. Ellen Degeneres is one person who has influenced the legalization of gays and lesbians.

Interestingly she is not an advocate of lesbian/gay rights. She does not talk about it on her talk show and has not allowed her sexual orientation to taint her reputation as a person. She is good natured and makes a positive difference in the life of others. Many people draw inspiration and guidance from Ellen.

These are interesting and accomplished women on a national front. I’m sure there are women in your community and in your club who merit acknowledgement. One of these women may be the focus of your club’s monthly meeting. I urge you to tag a local women’s history for an upcoming club meeting. Plan an event for your honoree and if she’s not a member of your club, invite them to your next meeting for a memorable event. * Forbes Magazine SGVD Website … Terry Perkins ~Webmaster…[email protected] Remember—The KEY is now available on the website.
