Arrow Antenna model 146-4S Four Element Two Meter Yagi Reviewby Bob Myers, K2TV

As part of the recent rustproofing and repainting project on my tower I needed a replacement for my old two meter 3 element side mounted yagi . The old antenna was up for many years and was in very poor condition. After checking out several designs and and manufacturers, I decided on an Arrow model 146-4S four element yagi as a suitable replacement. The antenna can be bought directly from Arrow (http://www.arrowantennas.com) or from any of the Amateur Radio dealers. A telephone call to Arrow Antenna put me in contact with the owner and after discussing the antenna design and fabrication, he convinced me that this was the ideal replacement for what I wanted to accomplish. They have a no questions asked money

back guarantee. The antenna was shipped via UPS and arrived well packed in a heavy duty cardboard tube which was double boxed in a heavy cardboard box. All the parts and instructions were sealed in plastic. What a nice surprise to see something so well packed for shipping. The other surprise was the quality of the actual antenna parts. The boom was made of heavy extruded aluminum and is square in shape rather than round. All the elements are made from solid aluminum stock and the gamma match has a solid aluminum block as a shorting bar and a SO-239 UHF connector to attach the coax feedline. All the hardware is stainless steel to prevent rusting. The assembly process takes about a half hour thanks to a well written assembly manual.

The 146-4S can be mounted for either horizontal or vertical polarization with the support mast mount on the center or the end of the boom. I chose to mount the antenna for vertical polarization with the mast clamp on the end of the boom to one leg of the tower.

Once assembled , I temporarily hooked up the antenna on top of a seven foot pipe and adjusted the gamma match using my MFJ-259B antenna analyzer. Tuning the gamma

match for a low SWR over the entire FM band was easy. After climbing the tower and installing the antenna, it was time for the moment of truth. How would the antenna perform? Would I be able to “hit” all the repeaters in the Nassau county and New York City area? Well the results were better than expected and using my GE MVS 40 watt transceiver, I was able to hit all the NYC repeaters full quieting, The forward main lobe allowed an excellent signal into the WB2ZII WECA repeater in Valhalla, NY on 146.060MHz and the 146.910 Mhz repeater in Yonkers. Of course my proximity to W2GSB/R and KB2UR/R made it easy to access those repeaters with no problem off the side of the beam. Mounted either horizontally for CW and SSB or vertically for FM this well built antenna should give many years of trouble free service.

Jerry “Tucker” Schatz, W2MFW to speak at our January Club Meeting.

Jerry Schatz, W2MFW of Copiague will give a presentation at our January meeting about his career as an actor in the Hollywood and New York movie and radio business from 1931 to 1942. Jerry worked at all the major studios, Paramount, MGM, Fox, Universal, Republic and Hal Roach studios. Among the movies that Jerry appeared in was “Anything Goes” with Bing Crosby and Ethel Merman, “Babes in Toyland” with Laurel and Hardy, “Boys Town” with Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney, “Captain January” with Shirley Temple, “San Francisco” with Clark Gable and Jeanette MacDonald, and “Sitting Pretty” with Ginger Rogers to name a few. Most people will remember him from his work in the “Our Gang Comedies” as Jerry Tucker, the rich kid who moves into town with a shinny new fire engine in the movie “Hi Neighbor”. Appearing in over 18 of the Our Gang comedies which entertained many of us over the years. Radio shows included daytime dramas (Never called “Soap Operas” in those days.) Children's shows and Specials. Come down and see Jerry and his wife Myra, WA2FIW for this wonderful interesting trip through the world of Hollywood that many of us never experienced, other than enjoying the entertainment provided by those who worked hard to give them to us. Bring your friends!Thursday, January 25th , 8PM at the Emergency Operations Center, Babylon Town Hall, 200 East Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst, NY.

Nassau County VHF Traffic Net Looking for check-in's

from Suffolk County The Nassau County VHF Traffic net meets

every day at 7:30 PM local time on the WB2WAK repeater on 146.805 Mhz (136.5

HZ PL). As there is no longer a Suffolk County VHF traffic net, the Nassau net has

been handling most of the Suffolk County traffic. This net is a training net and if you

would like to learn how to handle NTS traffic, this is the place to go. There is no

requirement that you have to take any radiogram traffic if you check in. It is a

place to learn and once you get comfortable with the procedure, you might want to give

it a try.

New York State Races NetThe New York State RACES net meets every Sunday at 9 AM on 3993.5 Khz. Check-in's from our area (region one) are invited. The net begins with a call-up at 9 AM and once the call-up is completed a drill message is

sent and then acknowledged by each station in the net. This net gives state wide augmentation to our local VHF nets.

The GERATOL NETMeets every evening on 3668 Khz +/- qrm at 0100 Z from October 1st through April

30th.

The GERATOL NET is often mistaken to be a group of older hams. This is not the case. Net participants include hams of all ages, both OMs and YLs from all states and the Canadian Provinces. All you need to participate is an Extra Class License and the ability to get on 3668 Khz.

NET PURPOSE

The purpose of the GERATOL NET is to assist properly licensed amateur radio operators in obtaining the GERATOL Net 75-Meter, 2-Letter Extra Class serialized UNBELIEVABLE OPERATING ACHIEVEMENT Award. The award, also known as the Geratol Basic Award, is issued by the GERATOL Net for working and having confirmed, all 50 states within the EXTRA class segment (3.750-3.775 MHz.) of the American 75 meter phone

This award is serialized. That means each time an award is issued, it is numbered sequentially. The number on each Geratol Basic Award is the number you hear used on the net and is exchanged by stations for the other awards and endorsements.

The GERATOL NET also offers thirty-five interesting and challenging endorsements to add to the Basic Award, as well as endorsements to the Directors Award in increments of 100.

Nassau County VHF TrafficNet Looking for check-in's

from Suffolk County

The Nassau County VHF Traffic net meets every day at 7:30 PM local time on the WB2WAK repeater on 146.805 Mhz (136.5 HZ PL). As there is no longer a Suffolk County VHF traffic net, the Nassau net has been handling most of the Suffolk Countytraffic. This net is a training net and if you would like to learn how to handle NTS traffic, this is the place to go. There is no requirement that you have to take any radiogram traffic if you check in. It is a place to learn and once you get comfortablewith the procedure, you might want to give it a try.

New York State Races Net

The New York State RACES net meets every Sunday at 9 AM on 3993.5 Khz. Check-in's from our area (region one) are invited. The net begins with a call-up at 9 AM and once the call-up is completed a drill message is sent and then acknowledged by each station in the net. This net gives state wide augmentation to our local VHF nets.

Message from the Editors

Please bear with us as we have a steep learning curve learning the software that is used to put together the Compass. This is your publication

and we need your input. When we took on this project we decided early on to make it interesting and informative. Too many club publications are nothing but “boiler plate” of

dull and uninteresting “stuff'. We feel that our membership has more to give

than most Amateur Radio clubs. In fact we deserve more than “stuff”. We are a diverse group

with many different back rounds and interests, both in and out of our ham radio community. We

think that because this is our publication, our membership can and will contribute information to the Compass. Please forgive any mistakes made

by the editors as we try our best to give you a first class club bulletin. If you have information to

contribute, please contact us. You need not be a professional writer or photographer. It should

just be intersting and informative. Send information, pictures, comments and ideas to:
