TABLE OF CONTENTS

It may be hard to believe, but half a century has already passed since the int-roduction of VITA metal ceramics in 1962 heralded the beginning of a new age in dental esthetics. At the time, VITA Zahn-fabrik was unique in Europe in developing a metal ceramic veneering system and launching it onto the market. Since 1962, more than 350 million units have been fit-ted worldwide using VITA VMK 68 and VITA VMK 95. True to the motto “Change brings success“, we pride ourselves on meeting the increasingly exacting requi-

rements placed on metal ceramic restora-tions in terms of functionality and esthetics. By focusing on the needs of dental technicians, dental surgeons and patients, we have consistently been able to create products that combine state of the art functionality with pioneering ad-aptations and innovations. The original name of the product – VMK – has since become a generic term, establishing it-self as a standard concept in modern den-tistry and confirming that we have steer-ed the right course from the very beginning.

However, it is not only in the area of den-tal ceramics – from veneering materials, to CAD/CAM solutions, through to artifi-cial teeth – where VITA remains the mar-ket leader in colored dental materials, thanks to continued improvements, sus- tained innovation and an efficient blend

of cutting edge and craftsmanship. The VITA shade standard is a true benchmark that leads the way internationally. As a family-run company with a long history, you can count on VITA Zahnfabrik to conti-nue fulfilling its pioneering role in materi-als, equipment and integrated solutions in the 50 years to come – guaranteeing cer-tainty, reliability and concentrated innova-tive power.

make life better: a smile spreads happi-ness, opens doors, creates opportuni-ties, helps us to overcome difficulties, gives us strength and makes even the grayest day a little brighter (Fig. 2a to 2c). The fact that a growing number of people can now enjoy an esthetic, at-tractive smile is due in no small part to three letters: “VMK“. VMK stands for VITA metal ceramics, the material that allowed dental technicians to combine permanent dental restorations with su-perior esthetics for the very first time.

VMK – a recipe for successful tech-nologyAs an innovator, VITA Zahnfabrik cer-tainly had its finger on the pulse in 1962 when it developed the first metal cera-mic, establishing a whole new market segment. For the first time, dental tech-nicians could create restorations that not only offered lasting esthetics and a natural appearance but that also allo-wed patients to smile again with confi-

50 years of VITA VMK – 50 years of VITA veneering expertise.

A considerable length of time has passed since barbers took care of the bloody business of tooth extraction (Fig.1), and pretty ladies would only

laugh or eat behind their hand in order to hide the damage to their teeth. How-ever, when it comes to wanting to finally smile again with confidence, nothing has changed. More than ever, we want to make the most of the positive energy that comes from a smile. Psychologists believe that a smile has the power to

dence. Since this revolutionary develop-ment by VITA Zahnfabrik 50 years ago, the company has continued to drive in-novation in dental technology in the area of tooth-colored veneering materi-als.

Important milestones in our successAn overview of the most important mi-lestones in the continued development of VITA veneering materials since the introduction of VITA metal ceramics is provided in Fig. 3.

Aiming to meet the needs of our users …… as part of a dynamic product deve-lopment process is standard practice at VITA. The importance of the develop-ments of the last 50 years to dental technology in the future is summarized here perfectly by Jürgen Freitag, a mas-ter dental technician from Bad Homburg, Germany: “It always amazes me that VITA never comes to a standstill“ he

Those who target their innovative efforts towards specifically meeting the needs of their clients and who measure their innovati-ve power against the benchmark of how effective their products are in actually helping users to solve their problems do not just monitor the market and respond with copy-cat products. This type of company will – like VITA – open up mar-kets, initiate change and drive develop-ment. This is why today, more than ever, VITA Zahnfabrik is the company that dental experts look to to solve their pro-blems and fill the gaps – an industry in-novator in the true sense of the word.

The latest furnace technology and thoroughly homogeneous mate-rial properties: the ideal combinati-on for superb firing results in just 80 minutes.

Time is one of the most crucial factors in ensuring cost-effective production pro-cesses in a dental laboratory. Up until now, the CAD/CAM workflow used in the fabrication of all-ceramic frame-works was determined largely by the considerable length of time taken up by sintering. With its innovative high-speed sintering program, the VITA ZYRCOMAT 6000 MS furnace (Fig. 1) has brought a new dynamic to this process, allowing dense sintering of zirconium dioxide frameworks in just 80 minutes.

Use:HighSpeed sintering is approved for VITA zirconium dioxide restorations with bet-ween 1 and 9 units. Manually colored parts must be pre-dried under controlled conditions in order to prevent the frame-work from becoming damaged as a re-sult of sudden vapor pressure during dense sintering. With the short program, established temperature phases such as controlled cooling to 400°C are used to ensure gentle sintering without critical residual tension.

Reliability:Tests show that optimum firing results are achieved: the zirconium dioxide can be reli-ably assumed to be in the tetragonal phase

and the average grain size is approximate-ly 500 nm (Fig. 2), both in the case of con-ventional firing at 1530°C over two hours and with HighSpeed sintering at 1530°C for 25 minutes. With values of 6.07 g/cm³ and approx. 1300 MPa, VITA ZYRCOMAT 6000 MS also offers a sintered density and bending strength comparable to that of

conventional sintering (VITA ZYRCOMAT T), see Fig. 3. When testing the break strength of bridge frameworks com-prised of three units, comparablevalues of approx. 800N were determi-ned in both cases (Fig. 4). Tests regar-

ding the fit (Fig. 5) and aging behaviorwere equally successful; the material strength of VITA In-Ceram YZ was signi-ficantly better than the minimum level required.

Furnace details:VITA ZYRCOMAT 6000 MS is designed for use with all high-temperature sinte-

ring and ceramic dental framework materials such as ZrO2 and AL2O3. Mo-lybdenum disilicide heating elements and fully automatic temperature cali-bration ensure homogenous distribution of heat inside the sintering chamber as well as high heat resistance. Compactly-sized at 475 x 315 x 480 mm (H x W x D), the furnace weighs approx. 27 kg.

As a result of its pioneering achievements in CAD/CAM techno-logy, VITA Zahnfabrik is in conside-rable demand as a competent part-ner in this area. The company has always been a staunch supporter of corresponding networks of selected partners because it understands the importance of specialization.

The current CAD/CAM market in den-tistry is becoming increasingly charac-terized by open, networked structures rather than closed, standalone systems. The increasing need of users for greater flexibility, both with regard to software and hardware interfaces, as well as in terms of materials, has been acknow-ledged by the industry. As a result, we now have a wide range of process op-tions to choose from that offer the right workflow for every dental technician and every laboratory.

Pioneering achievementsFrom the very beginning, VITA Zahnfabrik played a central role in establishing the use of CAD/CAM technology in den-tistry. In 1986, VITA Zahnfabrik began a collaboration with Sirona Dental Sys-tems (formerly part of Siemens), the leading international provider of dental CAD/CAM systems since 1985. VITA

Zahnfabrik was the first supplier of den-tal materials for their CEREC system, and remains the primary supplier to this day. This collaboration has endured as the decades have passed, and has been expanded continuously based on each partner‘s core competencies. Side by side, we have been a driving force in the growth of CAD/CAM technology, with the result that treatments today offer levels of precision, quality and speed that could not have been imagined by the dental community 25 years ago.

A perfect matchHowever, more recent VITA Zahnfabrik partnerships, such as our collaboration with Nobel Biocare for example, have also already proven their worth and are of considerable importance to the world of CAD/CAM technology. This coopera-tion agreement was signed at the start of 2010 with the aim of establishing a unified approach to development and with regard to supplying the market with high-performance dental materi-als. VITA veneering materials are fully compatible with the corresponding NobelProcera framework materials, thus providing the ideal basis for superi-or quality restorations. Nobel Biocare supports the use of VITA veneering ma-terials while NobelProcera CAD soft-

ware also provides its users with access to the VITA dental database. Collabora-tion has also been planned with regard to training courses, customer informati-on, and general knowledge provision.

Preferred partnerThe geometries of the VITA tooth lines are also included in the 3Shape Dental-Designer construction software. VITA Zahnfabrik also has qualified material partnerships with KaVo, Straumann, Reitel, pritidenta and AmannGirrbach, and material qualification programs have also been implemented with equip-ment manufacturers such as Gildemeis-ter and Röders. Additional cooperation agreements are already in preparation – at VITA Zahnfabrik, teamwork is an integral and active part of our corporate philosophy in every respect.

AN EYE FOR DETAIL

“The eye seeks out harmony and places of calm, is partial to space and has a soft spot for distance...“ This may sound like poetry, howe-ver, these are in fact concrete, practical tips.

At the VITA LIVE event for systematic esthetics “Ästhetik mit System“ on May 23rd, 2012 in the VITA Academy in Langen, Germany, Karl Heinz Körholz, a dental technician, took an unusual ap-proach to conveying the finer esthetic details of the VITAPAN PLUS anterior tooth to the 40- strong auditorium au-dience. He asked the question: What appeals to the human eye? According to this expert in prosthetics, “In order to properly familiarize yourself with an ac-rylic tooth, you must look at it individu-ally and in detail“. His impressive pre-sentation included high-resolution photographs of individual incisal edges, a variety of approximal contact examp-les, as well as surface structures shown under varying lighting conditions. His motto: the best way for a dental techni-cian to fully appreciate the physical na-ture of a tooth, as well as its structure and curvature, is to look at it from diffe-rent perspectives, and not just within the context of the set.

A practical approach to materials science The presentation from Dr. Jörg von Seg-gern, head of polymer research and de-velopment at VITA Zahnfabrik and an expert in materials, also went into con-siderable depth, clearly explaining thechemical interplay and the resulting im-pact on material properties. The goal of research in this respect is to achieve high bending strength coupled with low abrasion – for example based on filler distribution within the matrix that is as homogenous as possible. This scientific background information was directly linked with practical knowledge: questi-ons from participants regarding the light-curing of acrylics were answered comprehensively by Dr. von Seggern.

Live demonstrationPresented jointly by dental technician Karl Heinz Körholz and veneering speci-alist and master dental technician Jür-gen Freitag, the onsite demonstration was a real first. Mr. Freitag demonstra-ted live how VITA VM LC composite can be used to achieve a perfect shade match for VITAPAN PLUS teeth (Fig. 1). Informative tips and tricks for routine layering in the laboratory were also in-cluded, while Mr. Körholz demonstrated just how artistic gingival modeling for upper jaw dentures can be (Fig. 2). As one young dental technician put it: “That‘s what I found particularly im-pressive“. This opinion reflected the overall response to the content presen-

With her spectacular fashion and accessories collection, design-er Zofie Angelic has transformed VITA teeth into a fashion object. The photographs of these unusual creations taken by Lars Kroupa have triggered enormous interest throughout the media. Due to the considerable demand for these photographic works, superior qual-ity gallery images will be available for you to purchase on the VITA Zahnfabrik homepage from August 2012.

The collaboration of Zofie Angelic and Lars Kroupa is a meeting of two excep-tionally talented minds. Thanks to their great sense of the unique, they are the ideal choice for showcasing a subject as extravagant and sophisticated as teeth in extraordinarily artistic fashion. Zofie Angelic was born in 1965 in Ústí nad La-bem in the Czech Republic and grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. Speaking se-veral languages, she has become truly cosmopolitan over the course of her ca-reer, and is internationally renowned today as a designer with a flair for the unexpected. As well as studying art, fa-shion, and jewelry design, she is also a trained gold and silversmith. Lars Krou-pa was born in 1970 in Dresden, Germa-ny. He was already strongly interested

in photography during his studies at the Berlin Academy of Communication and Design. Since then, inspired by Henry Cartier-Bresson and his ideas of focu-sing on the elements of time and psy-chology, he has been able to capture the decisive moment with his camera over and over again.

For Zofie Angelic, teeth are a reflection of individual identity and esthetics. In her work as a designer, she says that she simply let herself be inspired by the variety of different shapes and sizes of the material she was working with – VITA teeth, taking on the role of natural teeth. Motivated by this creative impul-se, her designs included a corset embel-lished with VITA teeth, as well as a cou-ture dress reminiscent of a uniform and fitted with epaulettes featuring tooth appliqué. This exclusive collection inclu-des chains, dresses, rings as well as ear and hair jewelry. True to the motto “Sta-ging a scene never works“, photogra-pher Lars Kroupa once again success-fully emphasized the natural aspects of the setting, creating his typical “spea-

king pictures“ full of incredible presence and powerful expression. Every month from August 1st, 2012, all fans and enthu-siasts will be able to order a new image from the toothfashion collection via the webshop at www.vita-zahnfabrik.com. The images are priced at €249 each, which includes VAT. There will be an ad-ditional charge for postage.

In this article, master dental technician André Bouillon from St. Wendel, Germany, uses images to document how shading of lower-jaw bridge frameworks veneered using zirconium dioxide ceramics can be combined harmoniously with that of upper jaw telescopic work veneered using composite material.

Combining different veneering materi-als in one restoration solution is a chal-lenge for any dental laboratory. Howe-ver, with the VITA VM system, ceramic and composite veneers can be fitted side by side for the same patient wit-hout any difficulty, and without varia-

tions in shade between the different materials of the removable and the per-manent restoration.

Case studyThe images shown here document the restoration of tooth 16, 21, 22, 23 and 26 in a patient‘s upper jaw and of tooth 35, 36, 37 and 46 in the lower jaw. Using all-ceramic primary components as well as electro-formed secondary components that were bonded in a cast denture base without using a transversal connector, a removable bridge was fitted in the upper jaw onto seven telescopic crowns. The patient‘s lower jaw was fitted with two all-ceramic bridges comprised of a zirco-

nium dioxide framework, one of which included a cantilever pontic in region 46, as well as an all-ceramic crown with a zirconium dioxide framework on tooth 43. As requested by the patient and her dental surgeon, a very light shade in comparison with the residual dentition was selected in order to facilitate subse-quent restoration of the lower anterior area.

HIGH NOON IN HONG KONG

The success of VITA product solu-tions in more than 150 countries worldwide is grounded in our collabo-ration with committed and competent business partners. Examples include Henry Schein in Germany and TESCO in Asia, who came together in Hong Kong as part of our international trai-ning event.

In May 2012, more than 40 employees of Henry Schein made their way to the Chinese metropolis of Hong Kong for training in the latest product develop-ments from VITA Zahnfabrik (Fig. 1). A further aim was to share expertise and experience as ultimately, a broad range of knowledge is essential when it comes to providing comprehensive in-ternational support to VITA users. The brand new VITAPAN PLUS acrylic tooth was one of the main topics on the con-ference program. This innovative tooth line is perfectly complemented by the ultra-modern veneering composite VITA VM LC, the system components of which were described in detail for the course participants by the VITA sa-les advisor. The training content was rounded off by a presentation of VITA ZYRCOMAT 6000 MS, the fastest sinte-ring furnace on the dental market.

Highly productive technical discussions, for example with the German-speaking operations manager of TESCO, also took place during the guided tour of the com-pany. TESCO has facilities both on Hong Kong island as well as in the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen, one of the fastest growing cities in the world. This international exchange of ideas allowed visitors to learn a variety of interesting facts about the Chinese dental market and to find out more about the outlook in the area for the future.

A voyage of discoveryOf course, time was also set aside for guided tours in and around Hong Kong – after all, who knows when their next visit to the sweet-scented harbor (the literal meaning of Hong Kong) might be on the cards. Trips included a visit to Victoria Peak, one of the highest vanta-ge points in the city. From here, visitors can enjoy a fantastic view of the Hong Kong island skyline and of the Kowloon Peninsula on the opposite side. The view is particularly striking and evoca-tive at dusk, when the lights come on gradually in this busy metropolis (Fig. 2).

Visits were also paid to Tsim Sha Tsui, the area of the city often considered the

heart and soul of Hong Kong, as well as to the popular beaches and to Aberdeen harbor with its traditional Chinese junk boats. It was also hard to resist samp-ling local delicacies from the markets, or to ignore the numerous shopping op-portunities. And for those wishing to escape the big-city chaos of Hong Kong even for just a little while, a boat trip could be taken to Cheung Chau, a small but idyllic fishing island. The partici-pants all agreed that this international training event was a success in every sense of the word as well as an unfor-gettable experience.

AN OUTSTANDING PREMIERE

From April 19th - 21st, 2012, the first VITA Polymer Technology Days took place at company headquar-ters in Bad Säckingen.

12 opinion leaders from all over Germany, including dental technicians, dental surge-ons and university representatives all took part in this event at VITA Zahnfabrik (Fig. 1).

The program included a comprehensive presentation of the VITA polymers divi-sion and offered fascinating insights into the fabrication processes (Fig. 2 and 3) – from tooth lines such as

VITAPAN PLUS through to VITA CAD-Temp CAD/CAM blanks. Detailed pres-entations from Dr. Jörg von Seggern, head of the polymers division at VITA Zahnfabrik, and Professor Martin Rosentritt of the Department of Pros-thetic Dentistry at Regensburg Univer-sity Hospital ensured an interesting and lively discussion of the further develop-ment of polymers and the prospects for high-performance acrylics in the future. For the delighted participants, particular highlights included a visit to the poly-mer “pastry kitchen“ at VITA facilities in Schulhausstrasse and Ballyweg, as well as the opportunity to fabricate a tooth arch themselves on site (Fig. 4 and 5).

VITA ROCKS IN THE GOLDEN CITY

Following the success of the in-augural event in Nottingham in 2010 and the achievements of the follow-up event in Gothenburg in 2011, this year‘s VITA Rocks took place on Fri-day May 26th, 2012, in the Czech capital of Prague.

The VITA Rocks events have allowed VITA Zahnfabrik to further extend its commit-ment to facilitating advanced training and continuing education programs at an inter-national level. As well as supporting nu-merous training courses, congresses and conferences around the world, the com-pany can now provide an additional opti-on to those interested in gaining compre-hensive, indepth information from expert speakers on those topics that are current-ly relevant in dentistry. These events are always organized in close collaboration with the local VITA representative in the relevant country, in this case with Inter-dent d.o.o. The beautiful city of Prague was chosen as the location for the event

in order to give participants the opportu-nity to mix business with pleasure. The popular National House of Vinohrady on Peace Square with its impressive neore-naissance building constructed in 1894 provided the distinguished backdrop for this challenging training event.

PresentationsAnnika Vahle, a member of the VITA Zahnfabrik research and development team, opened the congress with a pre-sentation on how to correctly process zirconium dioxide, as this is a critical factor in clinical success. Mihael Skaza, a dental technician and Interdent d.o.o. team member, explained the parame-ters that should be taken into conside-ration when preparing a metalceramic restoration. The goal is always to facili

tate ceramic layering of an appropriatethickness. Claudia Meier, a dental labo-ratory owner from Kriens, Switzerland, then provided tips on setup and custo-mization of VITA PHYSIODENS and VITAPAN PLUS anterior teeth.

The next two speakers were both from Switzerland, and focused their presen-tations on the subject of digital den-tistry: Dr. Alessandro Devigus, owner of a dental practice and Vanik Kaufmann-Jinoian, a dental technology instructor and owner of a dental laboratory. Dr. Devigus described the process of digital shade determination using VITA Easys-hade and provided tips on correct pre-paration in the case of non-metal resto-rations. Mr. Vanik Kaufmann-Jinoian looked at the question of whether the

future of dentistry will be characterized by virtual or conventional approaches. His answer: digital dentistry has alrea-dy made its mark on dental practices and laboratories in the form of optical impression-taking and CAD/CAM fabri-cation of restorations.

In his presentation, Xavier Zahno, who owns his own dental laboratory in Mon-treux, Switzerland, looked at the fabri-cation of highly esthetic press-ceramic restorations, while Dr. Petr Hajny, a dental surgeon with his own practice in Prague, presented a variety of patient cases where he had completed highly esthetic anterior restorations using VITABLOCS RealLife CAD/CAM blocks.

The event was rounded off by demons-trations on how to use VITA VMK Mas-ter, VITA Easyshade and VITA VM 9, presented by Cenek Neruda, a dental technician and member of the VITA Zahnfabrik team, together with Andrej Lukáš, owner of a dental laboratory in Banovce, Slovakia. The program was essentially structured so that partici-pants who could not attend a particular presentation in the morning had the op-portunity to do so in the afternoon.

A resounding successThe entertaining evening event, which offered culinary delights, live music from the popular Czech rock band BLUE EFFECT, and lively discussion, brought events in the golden city of Prague to a memorable close. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from the almost 200 participants confirmed to the organiza-tional team of Interdent d.o.o. and VITA Zahnfabrik that the location, speakers

HERE COMES THE SUN: VITA VM SUN DENTINE AND SUN OPAQUE

Field of application and how to use Sun OpaqueThe standard range of VITA VM 13 Opaque materials offered has been ex-tended by additional powders in the shades yellowish (SO1), orange (SO2) and reddish (SO3) (Fig. 1). Because the shade does not bleed through so in-tensely, we can apply it in its pure form or mix it with one of our selected opaque materials. The main field of application is, of course, the cervical area. But, you can also apply it to occlusal surfaces, contact points, under bridge pontics and wherever only thin layering is possible. We apply the material to the area whe-re we intend to use Sun Dentine for the first firing.I would like to stress that, after the opaque firing, you should check to see how shiny the surface is because this aspect is of vital importance for achie-ving a successful outcome at the end of layering.

Sun Dentine imparts greater lumi-nosity and chromaticityThe natural appearance of a tooth is created by the way the individual toothlayers refract and reflect the incident light striking them. These are small, butessential details that add up to make a ceramic veneer outstanding – regard-less of whether it is layered onto metal or all-ceramic substructures. The new Sun Dentine controls luminosity and in-

tensifies the chromaticity in the lower ceramic layers – thereby lending the ve-neer a warmer appearance. It is

supplied in three shades: Light yellow (SD1), light orange (SD2) and orange-red (SD3) (Fig. 2). Sun Dentine gives us the possibility to adjust the shade effects of our ceramics even more effectively. Sun Dentine is primarily used for the cervi-cal area, on occlusal surfaces, at con-tact points and in the interdental spaces of bridge pontics.

How Sun Dentine is appliedFigures 3, 4 and 5 show the case of an anterior crown on tooth 21 which I ve-neered with VITA VM 13. Adjacent tooth 11 served as a model. It exhibits a high degree of chromaticity and radiates a

warm hue across its entire vestibular surface (Fig. 3). In the cervical area, I applied pure Sun Dentine directly onto the opaque material and spread it out thinly into the incisal direction of the

Sun Opaque and Sun Dentine are two new ceramic materials by VITA that enable us to create even more life-like ceramics and reproduce shades that are even truer to nature, while letting us play even more with luminosity, chroma and hue.

These new materials were premiered at the IDS 2011 in Cologne. Since then, we, at Ulmax Dental, have been using these materials more and more of our patients’ dental work because we wan-ted to put these new possibilities into practice as quickly as possible. Today, we can already say that we have been handed a tool that makes our work ea-sier and more enjoyable – where our creative options are only limited by our own imagination.

Sun Opaque: The basis for genera-ting warmth from deep within the toothWe use Sun Opaque to intensify the ef-fect of Sun Dentine in metal-ceramic veneers. Usually, we completely cover the framework with Wash Opaque (WO) and apply the final layer with Opaque (OP).By combining these two materials, we create the basis for esthetic-looking ve-neers. As needed, we can increase the chroma at this early stage and lend the shade more warmth. Previously, to crea-te this effect, we used to mix a little Wash Opaque (WO) into the opaque ma-terial. Such a technique, however, re-quires a certain amount of routine. Less experienced users may end up produc-ing an undesirable result, which can inadvertently raise the adrenalin level in both the lab and the consulting room. In such cases, Sun Opaque powder lets you achieve the desired outcome with much greater consistency.

veneer (Fig. 4). As a result, the intensity of the crown’s shade radiated from deep within the tooth. Next to the natural tooth, nobody can tell it’s a veneer at all

(Fig. 5). We think it’s best to start with Sun Dentine SD2. Its hue is perfectly matched to bright shades and accentua-tes the warm effect. At the same time, it is not quite as dominant as Effect Chroma EC5 or EC6. As described abo-ve, we like to layer Sun Dentine directly onto the opaque material layer and spread it out carefully in the direction of the incisal edge.

According to my experience, it is not ne-cessary to mix Sun Dentine with Base Dentine. If you apply the pure material, the effect of its shade nuance is not qui-te as intensive as with Effect Chroma materials and the final outcome recei-ves a more modest look.

Alternative fields of applicationAlthough the materials were not origi-nally designed for this purpose, I also

tried out SD1, SD2 and SD3 to create mamelons. In fact, these materials pro-ved to be a very good solution. Under certain lighting conditions, SD1 imita-ted natural mamelons particularly well. Although I love to work with Mamelon MM1 or MM2, without a doubt, Sun Dentine is a great alternative that I in-tend to use in the future.

Figures 6, 7 and 8 demonstrate another case of an anterior crown on tooth 21

that I veneered with VITA VM 13. The adjacent tooth 11 has very prominent mamelons (Fig. 6). When layering with Sun Dentine SD1, I built up matching mamelons (Fig. 7) to create a natural in-terplay of shades to match natural tooth 11 (Fig. 8). Sun Dentine proved to be an excellent solution for posterior bridges as well. For this indication, we can ge-nerously apply the material to the cervi-cal area and layer over it with Base Dentine (BD). I tried it out and it worked! As with all techniques, you obviously

have to get some practice at it.There is yet one more interesting appli-cation of this new powder: dental tech-nicians often wonder what materials they can use to enhance luminosity or chromaticity of a nearly finished bridge. Sun Dentine is one material that is verywell suited for this. However, because these materials produce a very colorin-tensive appearance, it is important that you make sure to distribute them evenly. In the case of all-ceramic posterior bridges, Sun Dentine can be used as a base material or for “cosmetic correc-tions”. It is not uncommon that patients, especially women, express the desire to have a thicker layer of ceramic applied to give more padding to their cheeks. In such cases, you have to be careful to not apply the material too thickly. If that happens, then you will not achieve a warmer shade as intended, but will cause the veneer to appear gray.

In the case of bridges, the folds disap-pear, but the ceramic loses a considerable amount of its luminosity and warmth. So we have a dilemma: Should we grind it all down again and start all over or simply leave it as is? Sun Dentine is the ideal so-lution in such situations because it gives our veneer back its warm hue

Recreating natureNot only the opalescent layers are re-sponsible for the attractiveness and uniqueness of natural teeth, but they also originate from the warmth radiat-ing outwards from deep within the tooth itself. These two phenomena fascinate the world of prosthetics. In this regard, our mission as dental technicians is to accurately reproduce this effect in ce-ramic. This is where technology, art and science merge.

For years, we have honed our skills to select the right materials and layer them properly. At the same time, the manu-facturers of ceramic materials have been working on innovative solutions that extend the broad range of our op-tions. By extending its VITA VM system, VITA Zahnfabrik has given us a truly uni-versal tool that encompasses the ce-ramics VM 7, VM 9 and VM 13.

Now, how we utilize the system and whether we let a little sunshine into our lab or not is left up to us and our own creativity. For users who are less expe-rienced in veneering with ceramic, Sun Dentine and Sun Opaque are the appro-priate and reliable materials for you to try out some more sophisticated ve-neering approaches. It will provide a major advancement in your develop-ment: start playing around by using the Professional Kit.

For experienced technicians, these new materials offer an alternative way to achieve every desired objective.
