    Better mixing and reduced power consumption

    Compared to dry-mounted mixers, submersiblesolutions offer greater flexibility and considerablesavings in energy consumption for a wide range ofmixing applications, such as solids suspension, bottomerosion, blending, circulation or destratification.

    How does mixing work?All mixing applications require varying degrees of both small-scale turbulence and bulk flow. With agood bulk flow, the contents of the entire tank areput in motion so that all parts are involved in themixing. Most mixing applications generate abundantturbulence and it is the strength of the bulk flow thatcontrols the efficiency of the mixing. The performanceof a submersible mixer is measured by the thrust (N)that it produces. So the strength of the bulk flow is inturn dependent on the total amount of installed thrust.

    Submersible mixers mean more efficient bulk flowSubmersible mixers allow a great deal of flexibility inpositioning and orientation, unlike their dry-mountedcounterparts. The mixer jet can be positioned todevelop over a long distance and adapted to theshape of the tank. This ensures the creation of amaximum level of bulk flow. The result: more efficientmixing and lower power consumption.

    Allowing the mixer jet to develop leads to a good bulkflow and efficient mixing of the entire tank.

  • The most frequently-used installation methodemployed with the Flygt 4410 and 4430 mixers is theguide bar with the mixer being easily raised andlowered. This method gives easy accessibility forservicing.

    The submersible route to lower capitalinvestmentUsing a submersible mixing solution presents anumber of cost advantages over traditional dry-mounted mixer alternatives. The installation method isquick and easy and requires low capital investment. A minimum number of units are required to mix verylarge volumes, thus further reducing the costsassociated with the installation.

  • Propeller

    In almost all applications, the mixing result depends on a good bulk flow being generated throughout thetank. In turn, the strength of this bulk flow depends onthe thrust of the mixer. The hydraulic efficiency, speedand diameter of the propeller together determine thecost in power consumption of the generated thrust.

    ITT Flygts banana blade mixers combine excellenthydraulic design together with large diameters andslow speed. The banana blade mixer is therefore theoptimum choice for generating the absolute maximumof thrust with the minimum of power consumption.

    This efficiency also has to be maintained whenoperating in fibrous material, where clogging could bea problem. So the swept-back design of Flygt bananablade propellers also provides exceptional self-cleaning properties.

    State-of-the-art designfor best performanceThe Flygt design solution relies on material bondingtechnology, employing fibreglass-reinforcedpolyurethane. This results in maximum strength withoptimum hydraulic efficiency.

  • The reason can be found in WCCRs superior slidingproperties. This factor results in significantly less wearbetween the two seal surfaces, and thus, offers alonger operational life with less risk of leakage. WCCRalso offers better mechanical strength and is far lessbrittle or prone to handling damage. The addition of a chromium, nickel and molybdenum binder in thematerial also ensures excellent corrosion resistancedown to a pH of 3.

    Seals engineered for the job

    Shaft seals are a crucial component in the reliableoperation of any submersible mixer. Flygt 4410 and4430 banana blade mixers employ our own uniquemechanical shaft seal design with an intermediatebarrier fluid.

    Why do seals wear out?Theoretically, the surfaces of mechanical seals shouldbe constantly divided by a thin film of liquid. Inpractice, there is always some direct contact whichleads to wearing of the seal surfaces. This is why the choice of material, and its sliding properties, is extremely important to the longevity of amechanical seal.

    Tungsten Carbide: the choice for longer lifeFlygt banana blade mixers are equipped with shaftseals manufactured from corrosion-resistant tungstencarbide (WCCR). Other material choices available frommixer manufacturers include silicon carbide (SiC), butfor the kind of applications where Flygt banana blademixers are used, WCCR provides the optimum choice.

    Tough coatings that are gentle on the environment

    The drive units (the motor and gearbox) of Flygt 4410and 4430 banana blade mixers are built of grey castiron. To prevent corrosion in varying applications, a resistant coating is required. In choosing suitablecoatings, great care has been taken to ensure thatany chemicals used do not present a hazard to theenvironment.

    Standard coatingWhere a standard coating is used, the cast iron partsare first sand-blasted and then dipped in a corrosion-preventive primer. The oxiranester top coating ischaracterised by high mechanical strength and impactresistance, as well as offering good protection againstchemicals.

    The oxiranester coating also offers environmentaladvantages during the manufacturing process.Compared with alternative coatings, the emission of solvents and volatile organic compounds issubstantially reduced. Oxiranester does not pose a risk of cancer and does not promote allergies.

    Epoxy coatingApplications with chloride levels >200ppm, will call for extra corrosion protection. In these cases analternative coating can be chosen. The standardprimer is replaced with a zinc-rich epoxy primer whichprovides increased anodic corrosion protection.Oxiranester is still used as a top coating because of its excellent properties, but here it is applied in threelayers. When chlorides exceed 500ppm, these mixersshould also be equipped with zinc anodes.

    Making your equipment even easier to work with

    Installation accessories should be rigid enough towithstand the weight and reaction forces exerted bythe mixer throughout its operating life. Professionaloperators also need the equipment to be easy towork with for installation as well as inspection and service.

    Convenient and safe lifting equipmentITT Flygt provides equipment that enables convenient lifting and handling of mixers.

    The safety is guaranteed with the CE marking, the European sign for safety approval.

    The lifting davit is mounted in a holder at its lower end which enables easy turning of the davit. To raise the mixer, the davit is fitted with either a winch or a pulley block.

    To reduce investment cost, one davit can be used for several mixers. Mixers can be left submerged without being suspended by the lifting wire. A Flygt patented lifting device guarantees the connection to the mixers lifting bail.
