Have you considered what rubbish is in the average waste bin on the Gold Coast? All kerbside waste bins are collected
by truck and transported to secure landfill on the Gold Coast but there is a variety of materials that we consider waste
which are actually valuable resources.
Because waste is something that we do, not something that is.

All together, more than 76 per cent of the average householdwaste bin could be recycled, which would divert another 730tonnes of waste from each household per year from landfill.
Recyclable paper andcardboard - 12 per cent
Newspapers and magazines are the
largest fraction of this waste whichis completely recyclable in youryellow lid household recycling bin.
Excess cardboard can be taken toyour local waste transfer station free
of charge for Gold Coast residents,to be recycled into new products.
Green waste - 29 per cent
This includes lawn clippingsand garden prunings.
It can be easily recycled in yourhome composting bin/pile or takento your local Council waste transfer
station to be recycled into compostproducts, or renewable energy.
Food and kitchenwaste - 25 per cent
This includes both foodscraps from the kitchen anduneaten/unwanted food
When this waste goes to landfillit creates greenhouse gases thatcontribute to climate change
This waste can easily be avoided byshopping smarter - planning meals andonly buying the food you really need
Food and kitchen waste makes excellent foodfor a home composting bin or worm farm.
Plastics - 14 per cent
Plastics are made from finite resources suchas crude oil, coal and natural gas.
More than one fifth ofthis plastic is made up ofrecyclable plastic containersthat can be placed in youryellow lid recycling bin.
Most of this plastic is packagingmaterial including thin filmplastic packaging, plastic bags
and polystyrene foams. Cleanplastic bags are recyclable at yourlocal supermarket and plasticpackaging can be reduced throughprecycling and avoiding packagedproducts wherever possible.
Recyclable glass - 3 per cent
This waste is glass bottles and jars that are 100 percent recyclable and can be easily placed
in your yellow lid householdrecycling bin or taken to
Council waste transferstations to be recycled.
Metals - 4 per centAll metal cans, tins and
aerosols can be recycled throughyour yellow lid recycling bin.
Scrap metal recycling facilitiesare also located at all Council
waste transfer stations forrecycling of other metal items
The rest -13 per cent
The rest of your bin waste ismade up of materials including
nappies, clothing, shoes, wood and
household hazardous waste. Unwantedclothing and other items may be suitable for
charity organisations. Council waste transfer stations havefacilities for safe recycling of household hazardous waste.
