in 2011 when the CASA program split from Pathways. CA-SAs in Ripley Coun-ty started working under the Pathways umbrella in 1991
and were joined in 2006 by those in Jef-ferson County. Ruble-Richter explained that the communities have stepped up to help
the kids in their communities who are facing challeng-ing home situations, but not in identical ways. Ripley and Jefferson, despite
being neighboring counties in the same state, have many similarities but have grown in different ways. So, the Voices teams in either coun-
ty now need to take slightly divergent paths to meet dif-fering needs in one county versus the other. But, a need both counties continue to have is more volun-teers - more com-munity members willing to step up and give around 10 hours a month to serve as a CASA to a kid in need from their county. “Our teams, the staff, our CA-SAs, the board are strong,” said Ruble-
Richter. “I’m confi -dent they’ll be able to continue to grow and serve more and more of these kids that really need someone to help make sure their voic-es are heard when it comes to decisions that have such a profound impact on their lives.” Voices faced many new chal-lenges in 2020 as an organization as they worked to navigate the changes brought about by the COV-ID-19 pandemic.
Ruble-Richter said the teams stepped up and found an even stronger level of teamwork as they made up for loss of fundraisers with different grants and took on more kids as some CASAs had to step away because of changes in their own lives caused by COVID-19. The teams are also looking for more CASAs - a need that both counties share on a regular basis. They aim to serve as many kids as possi-
ble in their counties, and need their com-munities’ support in order to meet this goal year after year. Voices will have a virtual training on August 6 for com-munity members in Jefferson and Ripley counties to become CASAs. To join the class, visit www.voicesforchildren.net to submit your application or call Whitney Roberts at 812-801-7424 or email [email protected].
