About the department of Science…

Our aim is that all students leave college equipped not only with the necessary scientific skills to take them to the next stage of their education, but also with the understanding that Science is a gateway to understanding the ever-changing world around us.

The Science department at Halesowen College supports the teaching of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology and Physics across the college and has a vital role in many students’ programs of study from Level 2 to Level 5.

Our department is staffed by science professionals at differing stages of their careers. The ethos within the department is one which supports and values each team member and always puts the students at the heart of all that we do.

The Science department is well resourced and staffed by specialist teachers and technicians who form a well-motivated and supportive team, committed to ensuring that all students fulfil and exceed their potential. There are state of the art Science facilities available in all laboratories such as suites of laptops and Interactive Whiteboards, which are used to provide the best learning experience to all students.

Department staff work hard to inspire students by passing on their knowledge and enthusiasm for Science throughout the curriculum. Lecturers support an expanding number of students who need both academic and pastoral support.

The department also supports delivery of higher Biology, Chemistry and Physics to HNC apprentices in Applied Biology, Chemistry and Engineering at L4 and L5.

Department staff work hard to inspire students by passing on their enthusiasm for science.

At Level 2, the programme of study followed prepares students for progression onto level 3. A-level results have been improving year upon year, student progress is above national average and thus there is a high uptake of Science at KS5 – currently the best at the Faculty. As a result, the Faculty provision has recently expanded to include A-Level Environmental Science. Value-added grades in the A Level Sciences are impressive,

Teaching Science at Halesowen College is enjoyable, demanding and rewarding. All teachers benefit from excellent opportunities for continued professional development with a key focus on teaching and learning. Newly qualified teachers receive excellent support.

The college has a superb group of staff and amazing students. We believe that our students deserve the best education and that lecturers are the most valuable resource in its delivery.

The Science Department collaborates with many local schools by delivering taster sessions to KS4 students, individual lecturers use their specific real-life interests within the sciences and integrate this into taster sessions that link the curriculum to real life.
