  • Memorial to Preachers 5

Memorial to Preachers In I Thessalonians 5:12-13 the Apostle Paul instructed the Thessalonians, “And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.” To “know them that labour among you” includes the meaning of “to have a regard and respect for; to respect their office, and treat them accordingly with reverence.” It refers to their faithful and com-passionate service as under-shepherds of the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ. If we are to have a regard and respect for them as they labor, then it is necessarily implied that we also treat their memory with respect when God calls them home to their eter-nal reward. This past year Almighty God has called the names of the fol-lowing from our ranks. While we who are alive and remain here continue to labour in our Master’s fields, let us pause in our deliberations to remember them who have gone on before us. Let us continue to lift up their families and congregations in our prayers to the God of all comfort.

  • Moderator’s Address 27David Proctor

    Moderator’s Address

I am very honored to have been elected as your moder-ator for the 2019 messenger meeting of the Missionary Baptist Association of Texas. The fact that I have grown up in the Asso-ciation makes it all the more special for me. As I look out among the faces here tonight, I see several men and women who have become my Baptist God parents in the Lord. There are many people here tonight who have stood beside me throughout the years. In spite of my faults, you have loved and encouraged me anyway. I am eternally grateful for each of you. I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest love and gratitude to my wife, Shawna Proctor. If I have accomplished anything in the ministry, it is because you have given me your love and full support. You are my special blessing from God. Also, I would like to thank my dear mother, Mrs. Judy Wilkerson, of whom I am so proud to call my mom. I can never than God enough for you, and for the Christ-like example you have passed down to your children. While contemplating this Moderator’s Address, I was led to a passage of Scripture found in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church concerning his ap-proach to ministry in this city. The words found in this passage have aided me in determining the theme for this year’s meet-ing. Tonight, and for the next couple of days, I want us to think about the Essence of Ministry. The word “essence” means “the intrinsic nature of something; the qualities which determine the character of something”. I feel that it is very healthy for ministers of the Gospel to evaluate themselves and their minis-tries from time to time. We do well to ask ourselves the ques-tion, “What am I doing with my ministry?” For the next little while, maybe we can answer this question. First, our ministry should be characterized by faithful proclamation, “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.” (vs. 2), and “And my

  • Moderator’s Address28speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:” (vs. 4). We do not proclaim a “something”, we proclaim a “some-one” whose name is Jesus Christ. This Association has long stood for the preaching of the Gospel. Perhaps now, more than ever, we need to commit ourselves to the proclamation that Je-sus Christ is the Savior; Jesus Christ is Lord. We are living in a post-modern world where there are post-modern ideologies and opinions. There are those who view pastor/preachers as having very little, if nothing at all, to contribute to society. They look at pastors and preachers as nothing more than caretakers of the needy, and peddlers of psychological babble. Regard-less of the public’s opinion, we have been called of God, and equipped by God, in order to proclaim the Bible message of God. We come from an unbroken line of proclaimers before us. The prophets, apostles, and preachers before us have left us a great legacy. I hope we are embracing this legacy. Second, our ministry should be characterized by trans-formation. Paul said, “That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” (vs. 5). Many of the Corinthian believers had come out of cult worship, supersti-tions, and evil practices. The transformation came about by the very power of God. I hope that each of you, first and foremost, preach and teach in order to glorify God, but I also hope that each of you believe in spiritual transformation. Paul won them to Christ, and he developed them in Christ. As proclaimers, we should expect to see the Holy Spirit bringing about transfor-mation in the lives of our people. I am always thrilled to hear from my fellow pastors concerning church growth and spiritu-al transformation taking place in their ministries. Remember, transformation produces growth, growth produces change, and change produces new ministries within the church. Our ministries should be characterized by celebration. “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of pow-er:” (vs. 4). Paul said “demonstration”. This is found only here in the New Testament. The word carries the idea of sincerity

  • Moderator’s Address 29and conviction. It is an outpouring of the grace of God. I want to remind each of you that proclaiming Jesus Christ as Savior, and proclaiming the Bible message, is supposed to be a time of celebration, not a time of defeat. Now it is at the junction of my speech that I may not be well-received. We are not all in agree-ment of the different approaches and styles of celebration and worship. I feel that it is detrimental to the cause of Christ when we spend more time trying to define celebration and worship, than we do actually celebrating Jesus Christ in worship. The last thing we need in the Missionary Baptist Associ-ation of Texas is a “worship-style police force”. God did not call any of us into the ministry for the purpose of arguing, fussing, or being critical of others. I don’t know if any of us have the real answers to proper or non-proper celebration of Christ, but I do know that celebration and worship are the signs of gratitude to God, and an outflowing of a person’s heart. Me personally, I can never thank, praise, glorify, and celebrate the Lord Jesus Christ enough for who He is, and for what He has done in my life. I look forward to our meetings this week. Let’s all be about worship to Christ, and encouragement to each other.

    David Leland Proctor
