SPCA was in desperate need for a major improvement of a new floor, water heater, paint and supplies to further the health quality for the cats and kittens coming in. Through a Petfinder Foundation Rescue U Renovation grant of $2,100 and a generous donation of product from The Home Depot in Yulee, a miraculous change in their environment was accomplished! Additionally, Bert Norman’s Plumbing, Inc. and Fedja Tile and Stone of Jacksonville donated discounts for product and labor. With the help of all these wonderful people and all our volunteers who worked so hard to do all the prep work of boxing, moving, painting and reorganizing, the job went smoothly and the cats and kittens now have a cleaner, healthier intake room. The new ceramic floor is easy to clean, especially since all of our cabinets, shelves and tables are now on wheels. The Intake Room is the heart of the operations at Cats Angels and is used for many purposes. It’s our laundry room, food preparation area, exam area, living area for cats, drop off /pick up area for our weekly “spay day” as well as the donation receiving and pricing area for the Thrift Store. We thank all of our volunteers and supporters for their patience over the week-long renovation of this space. International Homeless Animals Day Walk and Candlelight Vigil

August 15, 2015Cats Angels and Nassau Humane Society joined for a 2 mile Walk and Candlelight Vigil at the Gazebo in Central Park. A record number of participants at the Vigil shared stories about finding ‘forever homes’ and saying prayers for those who weren’t as lucky. This event is also for the volunteers and rescue workers because it reinforces our commitment to the animals we are trying to help. Cats Angels had 16 Adoptions and helped with 85 spay/neuter surgeries during August - Homeless Animals Month!

Our “Cat Mobile” was purchased used in 2005 with 30,000 miles and served us well. The inside of the roof was held together with duct tape (literally) and it had the sweet smell of our spay/neuter successes and every cat it transported. It was well maintained mechanically, but with age, miles and one problem after another, it was time to say goodbye. Thanks to some hard bargaining and the wonderful folks at Jacksonville Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Arlington, our Director Beth Hackney is safely transporting in a no frills 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. We continue to search for grant money to cover the costs of the new Cat Mobile, but safety and necessity became priority. We have a Go Fund Me page (you can reach through Facebook) and appreciate donations of any amount to the Cat Mobile Fund.

Life Lessons from Lydia

SPAY AND NEUTERTHE RESPONSIBLE SOLUTION

Need to talk....adopt a mature adult cat. They are good listeners, non-judgemental and

give unconditional love.

Hello all my little peeps. Miss Lydia here and I want to talk to you folks about a disease that many senior cats suffer from and I am one of them. It’s called Hyperthyroidism.

What is hypothyroidism? Feline hyperthyroidism is a disorder resulting from excessive thyroid hormone. The disease occurs in middle to older cats without sex or breed predilection. What are the symptoms? May include weight loss, poor hair coat, rapid heart rate, voracious appetite or thirst, anxiety or ner-vousness, diarrhea or vomiting, and vocalizing. How is this diagnosed? Diagnosis is achieved through a simple blood test. How is this treated? Most physicians recommend oral medica-tion. But some kitties like me also suffer from stomach upset, so we have to take our medication through another route…. the skin. This is accomplished by applying a measured amount of a medicated lotion to the inside of my ear. My body absorbs the lotion and with it the medicine.

Now this is a great way for me to take my medicine, but the prescrip-tion costs $50 per month. The good folks here at Cats Angels have been taking wonderful care of me for many years, but I know that this puts a bit of a stretch on the old budget. So I am asking my friends for some help. If anyone has a couple of dollars to spare and wants to help with my medication bill I would be forever grateful. Even $5 helps out. If you would like to sponsor a month’s worth of medicated cream, we would let all of our Facebook friends know with a shout-out for you.

Well have to run for now, time for my kitty yoga. Love and purrs to all.

97 Meows for Ted and Sandy Kostich of KDI Builders on Amelia Island

Why 97? That’s the number of adult cats they helped to sponsor and find homes during the MEGA Adoption Weekend at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds in July. The Kostichs paid the adoption fee of 67 adult cats on Saturday and found other sponsors to pay the adoption fee of 30 more adult cats on Sunday. Ted and Sandy wore their sandwich boards both days and scouted for good homes for the adult cats.

Why just adult cats? Kittens are the first to go out the door at these events while the adults are usually still there at the end. For some it is their last chance if they are going back to a crowded kill shelter. If people can be encouraged to make a difference in the life of an adult cat, then it is a win for everyone. The MEGA Adoption Event coordinated by First Coast No More Home-less Pets is held quarterly and over 1,000 dogs and cats are looking for homes at each event. All of the animals are spayed or neutered, current on vaccines and micro chipped.

Wearing Jeans to Raise Funds for Cats AngelsThe employees of CBC Bank in Fernandina and Fidelity National Financial, Inc. in Jacksonville recently helped Cats Angels just by wearing jeans to work. Employees donate $5 for the privilege of wearing jeans on Friday once a month. Fidelity employees can also buy a chance for another $5 for a private parking spot close to the building for one month. All money raised from wearing jeans and the parking raffle goes to the chosen charity. Beth accepts a check for $647.93 from CBC Bank and $800 was raised by Fidelity National Financial, Inc. Meow and Thank You!

Congratulations to Camille and Scott Gregg and the lovely Mimi for being chosen as the winner of our photo contest. Mimi will have the cover spot and the four runners-up with have full page photos inside the calendar. The calendar will be launched at our “Rescue Me” fundraiser on November 14 and on sale at the Thrift Store and online at our website. Scott Moore collected the photographs and supervised the judging with assistance from some colleagues at the Island Art Associa-tion. Many thanks to our judges, winners and contest participants.scottmoorephotography.com

Happy Tails

Just an update on Derek from Alice’s litter 5 years ago. He is perfect! The love of our lives. So glad I wandered into Cat’s Angels and found him! He’s such a ham. He was on HLN - featured as pet of the day on the Jane Velez Mitchell show! He loves attention (and belly and head kisses). Thanks again! He is the greatest!

I am a proud owner of a Cats Angels cat. My beautiful cat Bentley Sebastian was adopted in December 2005. He’s a beautiful gentle giant of a Maine Coon and I brag about you guys all the time. He’s referred many people to you with great success. His birthday is in July. This is the “little” kitten 10 years after you guys rescued him. Can’t thank you enough! He is a joy! Tammy

Why your Donations are so important to Cats AngelsWhen we are asked “which cat needs a home the most?” it’s not an easy question to answer because they all do. If we were to narrow the selection down, here are two Special Needs cats that would be at the top of the list. Esmeralda is a calico cat with three legs that was left by uncaring humans at a gas station on busy Hwy 40 in Kingsland, GA. She’s a sweet girl who loves people and would thrive as an only cat or with one other cat. Stormy Princess is a gray and white cat who has been with us for a few years. She is on medication twice a day for her heart. She gets stressed with too many other cats, is getting sedentary and has gained some weight. Her medication is not expensive and she desperately needs a home where she can have less anxiety and more exercise.Esmeralda and Stormy Princess are just two of our Special Needs cats waiting for their “forever homes.” It is because of your generous donations and support of our fund raising that you can help Cats Angels help these animals have better lives.

Your donation of $25, $50 or other amount will help Cats Angels, Inc. SPCA achieve our mission to provide

for the well being of animals who are abandoned, injured and subjected to unfair or cruel treatment.
