On Valentine’s Day, Consider Financial Gifts...submitted by Daniel Haller FINANCE

Last year, Americans spent more than $19 billion on Valentine’s Day gifts, according to the National Retail Federation, with the majority of this money going to flowers, candy, cards and an evening out. These gifts were thoughtful, of

course, and no doubt appreciated, but they were also somewhat disposable, for lack of a better word. On the other hand, some financial gifts can have a pretty long “shelf life.”

Beyond simply enclosing some money in a card, what sort of financial gifts can you give? The answer depends somewhat on the recipient. For example, if your sweetheart is also your spouse, some of the gifts suggested

below may be redundant to the financial moves you make together. However, if you aren’t married, or if you and your spouse maintain separate finances, these ideas may make excellent Valentine’s Day presents:

IRA contributions ■ – Technically, you can’t contribute directly to someone else’s traditional or Roth IRA, but you can write a check to your loved one – although, of course, he or she is free to use the money for any purpose. Like most people, your valentine may not usually contribute the yearly maximum amount – which, in 2017, is $5,500, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older – so your check should be quite welcome. A traditional IRA can grow on a tax-deferred basis, and contributions may be tax-deductible. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and any withdrawals you make before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty. A Roth IRA’s earnings are distributed tax-free, provided withdrawals aren’t taken until the account owner is 59½ and has had the IRA for at least five years.

Charitable gifts ■ – Consider making a gift to a charitable organization supported by your loved one. When you send cash to a qualified charity, you can get a tax deduction, but you might gain even bigger benefits by donating appreciated securities you’ve held for more than one year. By doing so, you can generally deduct the value of the securities, based on their worth when you make the gift. Plus, neither you nor the charity will have to pay capital gains taxes on the donated investments.

Contributions to an emergency fund ■ – It’s a good idea for everyone to maintain an emergency fund to cover unanticipated expenses, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or out-of-pocket medical bills. If your valentine doesn’t have such a fund, consider helping him or her establish one, with the money going to a liquid, low-risk account.

Gym membership ■ – Although not actually a “financial” gift, a gym membership can nonetheless bring some positive economic results to your valentine. For one thing, the insurance industry is providing more incentives to encourage people to exercise and live healthier lifestyles. But even if a gym membership doesn’t give your loved one a break on insurance premiums, it can nonetheless result in better physical conditioning, which, in turn, could ultimately result in lower medical costs.

On Valentine’s Day, you may still want to get your sweetheart something associated with the holiday. But if it’s within your means to do so, also consider one of the above suggestions for financial gifts. Your generosity will still be felt long after the chocolates are eaten and the flowers have faded.

ACTIVITIES UPDATE November Adult BINGO

Bingo proved to be an exciting evening with the final blackout round having two different BINGO winners at the same time. Sponsors, Consuelo Souders, Keller Williams Realty and Brian Souders, Supreme Lending, decided to award each of them with the same prize of $250 Visa Gift Cards! Congratulations to Jared Hansen and Lauren Huber for winning! Melinda McCabe won the $200 photography gift voucher sponsored by Jen Melick Photography & Design. The next Adult Bingo is scheduled for March 10th.

Thank you event sponsors: Consuelo Souders, Keller Williams Realty; Brian Souders, Supreme Lending; Jen Melick Photography & Design; Highland Creek Golf Club; Blake Lewis, Keller Williams Realty; Massage 4 Health Wellness; Prosperity Chiropractic; Cathy Staskel & Associates, Allen Tate Realtors and Twenty-Six Acres Brewing Company.

CPR/AED ClassHighland Creek adults and teens are being proactive and getting CPR/AED certified! This is the perfect class for teens that are babysitters. Two classes will be scheduled in 2017!

“Please Pass the Peas”, Youth Etiquette ClassJust in time for the holidays! Highland Creek children gathered to learn the dos and don’ts at the dinner table. They were taught proper place setting as well as phone manners, sports etiquette, sending thank you notes and respect, just to name a few. This annual class continues to fill up so watch for the next one in November 2017. Also, check out the tween and teen classes that will cover the above topics as well as job interviews, cell phone dos and don’ts, appearance and other important topics. Registration for these two classes is now open.

Holiday BazaarOver 60 vendors filled the gym at Cox Mill Elementary School selling their unique and special goods. Some of the items included handmade jewelry, pottery, Christmas décor, painted signs, skincare, and dips and spreads just to name a few. The Highland Creek Holiday Bazaar is definitely unlike any other shopping experience due to the wide variety of items offered under one roof and no charge to get in and shop! The first 250 shoppers received a shopping tote full of goodies from several vendors and event sponsors. Also, a few lucky bags contained “mystery money” that could be used at any of the vendors! Thank you to our event sponsors: Sarah Zdeb, Keller Williams Realty, Smart Savvy Sold Team; Dr. Jennifer Doriott, ChiroPure and Brigitte Perry and Cecilia Ferrari, Elite Realty Pros. In addition, Two Chicks and a Truck food truck was on-site selling delicious food. Don’t miss the next bazaar scheduled for November 11th (registration will be September 2017).

Outdoor Decorating ContestSponsored by Consuelo Souders & Company, Keller Williams Realty and Brian Souders, Supreme Lending

Several Highland Creek residents outfitted the outside of their homes with beautiful lights and decorations for the holidays. Out of the three categories (All White Lights, Multi-Colored Lights and Chevy Chase Theme) winners were selected by a team of volunteers who spent many evenings driving around and judging the homes. 1st place winners for each category received a $50 gift card, 2nd place received a $25 gift card and there were a total of 9 “Honorably Mentions”. Thank you to all residents who participated in the contest!

Tree LightingMany Highland Creek residents gathered around to celebrate and share the annual tradition of lighting the tree at Prosperity Park. Many of you may not know the origin of this tree. It was planted in memory of Bruce Hoban’s beloved mother, friend and pillar of the community, Barbara Hoban. If you look at the base, you will see a memorial stone that reads “she never met a stranger”.

For those of you that were fortunate to know Barb, you know that she was the most inviting, caring, spirited, fun-loving person. She was a social butterfly and loved to be around people. She was extremely active in the community and helped form social groups like Empty Nesters, Golden Girls and the Women’s’ Golf Club.

Every year, when the tree lighting is celebrated, we are reminded of Barb and how she impacted our community and so many lives. Her spirit and love for life shine through each of those decorations on that tree. It is decorated by residents along with the Hoban family with the same love she felt for each of us and the community she lived in.

Thank you to the Highland Creek Elementary School Choir for performing several Holiday songs and to our volunteers: Robert, Paige, Adriana, Connor, Jacob and Nolan, who helped serve hot cocoa and cookies and hand out decorations for the tree.

Teen Holiday Game HourThere were some new faces at this year’s Holiday Game Hour! We started with a black-out round of BINGO for a chance to win an AMC gift card (congratulations Tahlia) and congratulations to Melody for winning round two of BINGO.

The teens then played a fun round of the Left/Right game which kept them all guessing when the story would end and who would win the prizes being passed! The last game played was Saran Wrap Ball. The teens had a fun time with this game! They tried to un-wrap a big ball of saran wrap with prizes placed throughout the ball before the person on their right rolled doubles and the ball had to be passed. They got to keep all prizes they unwrapped. And to make it a little harder…they had to wear oven mitts!

This great group of kids made this a fun hour!

Visit with SantaWhat a joy it is to see families come visit with Santa year after year. Many children wrote Santa a letter or gave him a list of gifts they would like to see under their tree on Christmas morning. Other children (mostly the littler ones) didn’t want anything to do with Santa! The closer they got to Santa’s lap, the louder the cries seemed to be. Sometimes those tears produce the best pictures and memories. While waiting in line, families filled out raffle tickets to win some fun baskets. After visiting with Santa, families took pictures in front of the various decorations and props in the Sports Club. They enjoyed hot cocoa and cookies, and then headed outside to get their face painted or ride the trackless train.

The visit with Santa is not complete without the annual tradition of the Toys for Tots drive sponsored by Consuelo Souders & Company, Keller Williams Realty. Several boxes of toys were collected and donated to the organization with help from local Marines who attended the event.

Thank you to our volunteers: Robert, PJ, Summer, Gabriella, Isabella, and Kaitlyn. Raffle winners: Candra Davis (gift card tree), Julie D. (movie), Kelly Koler (board games), and April Walker (chocolate & gingerbread house).

Kids Cookie ExchangeHighland Creek kids put on their bakers hats and made some very impressive cookies! They brought a variety of cookies that filled the tables.

Before the exchange, the kids played two rounds of BINGO. Congratulations to Delaney who won the “railroad crossing” round and Fiona who won the “blackout” round!

We then divided the kids into two groups and played the “Left/Right” game while passing five prizes in each group. It was a very exciting game! After the fun games it was time for the cookie exchange! The kids were given cookie sheets to fill and take home to share with their families. A big thank you to our volunteers: Abby, Grace, Katelyn, Madi and Tyler!

CrossPointe of Highland Creek 2016 Holiday Extravaganza...submitted by Roberta JohnsonSaturday, December 10th, CrossPointe of Highland Creek kicked off their holiday celebration in a fun and purposeful way. Jim and Sharon Chessum, Jim and Valerie Devine, and Betty Walker opened up their homes for drop in receptions. They served an enormous variety of appetizers, desserts, beverages and eggnog for very enthusiastic neighbors.

At the end, a band of neighborhood Christmas Carolers, escorted by David Reith driving his brightly lit holiday “Sleigh Truck” with Santa (Anthony Narducci) and 16 elves collected the generous gifts for ”A Better World”, their 2016 charity choice. Before the night was over, the truck was overflowing with new clothes, toys and gift certificates for boys and girls K-12.

The charity chosen for this year was “A Better World” (www.abetterworldcharlotte.org) whose mission is to transform the community of Ashley Park through its youth (K-12), by helping children to achieve their personal best academically, to become productive citizens, and to give back to their community. ABW also provides Ashley Park’s disadvantaged youth tutoring, homework assistance, mentoring and a hot meal 5 days a week.

It was said that this event, led by Social Committee Chairperson Sue McPhee, the Social Committee, reception helpers and volunteers, helped create a sense of what living in a neighborhood is supposed to feel like, and the way it used to be years ago. It was truly a great evening for Crosspointe of Highland Creek. They are already anticipating future events that they hope will include even more neighbors as they continue to strive for a United Community!

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to a great year in 2017! As the New Year begins, let us offer some community reminders. We feel that it is important to repeat some of these for the benefit of our newer residents.

Architectural Approval RequestsAs spring approaches, many of you will plan home and landscaping improvements. Please be sure to submit an Architectural Approval Form to Hawthorne Management Company prior to beginning any modification of the exterior of your home. If you plan to install a fence, first read the Fence Design Guidelines and then submit a Request for Fencing Architectural Approval Form. Both of these forms are on the community website at highlandcreek.com. To access the forms, click on:

Resources• Governing Documents and Forms• ARC Fence Request Form or ARC • General Request Form.

You may also pick up either of these forms at the front desk of the Sports Club at 6616 Clarke Creek Parkway. The request will be reviewed by the Modifications Committee, who will respond to you in writing. Please allow 30 days to complete the approval process. Prior approval of your modification or fence installation is required before your work begins; in addition, it may save you time and money.

Exterior Maintenance of HouseThe governing documents for Highland Creek hold the Owner responsible for maintenance of the exterior of his/her house. Article XII, Section 6 of the Declaration states that each Owner shall prevent the development of any unclean, unsightly, or unkempt condition on his or her Unit. In recent years, mildew/mold and rotten wood have become widespread maintenance issues, particularly in the older neighborhoods of the community. Both are unattractive and, if not addressed, can lead to major exterior and interior problems. Please take the necessary steps to replace any rotten wood and pressure wash the mildew/mold early on.

Ice on the ParkwayWe often receive calls about ice on the parkway during the winter months. The ice is not the result of irrigation leakage; the irrigation pumps have been shut down. The water may be seepage from the soil in the medians or due to precipitation. Please watch closely for areas of ice and drive safely.

If there is an ice or snow storm, the streets will be plowed, scraped or salted by the City of Charlotte or the City of Concord. The Association is not responsible for this service.

Roundabout Traffic RulesMany residents have asked us to include the traffic rules for roundabouts such as the one on Christenbury Road. Please read these provided by CMPD and adhere to them whenever you approach the roundabout

Right in, right out – Drivers enter and exit • a roundabout by turning right. Once in a roundabout, all traffic travels in a counter clockwise direction.Roundabout has Right-of-Way – Drivers • within the roundabout have the right-of-way.Yield on entry – Drivers entering the • roundabout must yield to traffic until a safe opening is available.

By following these Roundabout Road Rules, you are showing courtesy to fellow road users and helping to ensure traffic flows efficiently and safely.
