N.B. On the night of March 4th,1945, the Tondelayo was returning from a leaflet drop on Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, when crossing the East Coast at Clacton-on-Sea, it was mistaken by the anti-aircraft batteries for a German bomber which had been sighted in the area. The battery opened fireand the Tondelayo was hit, severing controls, setting alight to the aircraft and injuring one of the crew. As the aircraft began to loosealtitude it was hit again, injuring the tail gunner. At this point, the Tondelayo's Captain Lt. Col. Earl J. Aber, gave the signal to bail out.Captain Aber and Co-Pilot Lt. Maurice J. Harper stayed at the controls of the critically damaged plane whilst the rest of the crew jumpedto safety. It is also believed they stayed at the controls of the Tondelayo in order to prevent it from crashing into nearby homes. Theplane eventually came down onto mud banks near Wrabness, with Captain Aber and Co-Pilot Harper still aboard.
