GANDHI‘S SWADESHI MOVEMENT AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE TODAY

LECTURE WITH DR. JONA ARAVIND DOHRMANN AND DR. KIRSTEN SAMES (in German)

The Swadeshi movement in India played a major role in the Indian freedom movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. Before Gandhi these efforts were local, e.g. in 1905 on Bengal. Gandhi then raised this idea to a higher level within the framework of his non-violent political activities, spread it throughout India and thus made a significant contribution to India‘s Independence.

The extent to which Gandhi‘s Swadeshi concept is reflected in today‘s political and economic reality in India can be dis-cussed after the lecture.

OF NON-VIOLENCELECTURE WITH CLEMENS JÜRGENMEYER (in German)

Who was Mahatma Gandhi, who undoubtedly played a decisive role in shaping the history of the 20th century and who still today probably represents an important perso-nality for many people primarily because of the practice of non-violence he represented? Which thoughts or even which mental building are associated with his name? And what does he have to say to us today, more than seven decades after his violent death on 30 January 1948?

MY LIFE IS MY MESSAGE. THE LIFE AND WORK OF MAHATMA GANDHI

A PHOTO EXHIBITION (in German and English)

The exhibition shows the life and work of the historical figure of Mahatma Gandhi through rare pictures and ar-chive material. In an interdisciplinary project, Gandhi scien-tists, historians, photo experts, and graphic artists have joined forces to transform black-and-white photographs into color images and thus turn them into true documents of history. The missing colors were added according to historical circumstances.

The photo exhibition has been conceived and realized by the Gandhi-Serve Foundation, Berlin.

150 YEARS MAHATMA GANDHIMahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, 150 years ago. On this occasion, this great theorist and practitio-ner of non-violent resistance will be remembered. This is necessary especially in a world in which almost every form of violence is an accepted and widespread means of con-flict resolution, both in the individual as well as in the soci-al and international sphere. And it is necessary in a world whose structures are changing and shifting massively. The polarization and the growing conflicts of interest are the cause of conflicts, which must be handled creatively so that they do not provoke new violence.

The series of events aims to recall Mahatma Gandhis life and ideas, but also to draw a link to other non-violent movements and, last but not least, to ask concretely what practical relevance Gandhi‘s approaches can still have today.

The event series is a cooperation of the Evangelisches Dekanat Darmstadt-Stadt and Deutsch-Indische Ge-sellschaft Darmstadt-Frankfurt e.V.

GANDHI JAYANTI IN DARMSTADTMohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, 150 years ago, in Porbandar, India. In India Gandhi is honoured with a Gandhi Jayanti (anniversary) on this day. We also want to commemorate Gandhi, listen to Bhajans (spiritual songs) together, which he himself liked to hear, and learn more about them, their origin and meaning, what they meant for Gandhi and what we can learn from them even today (in German, English and Hindi).
