Jordan: Okay then, let’sstart with secretnumber 1 thehistory of Qigong perhaps youcould tellus thehistoryofQigong.

Marcus: It’saliLletrickybecauseQigonghasarecordgoingback5000plusyears.IrememberSifutellingmethatinamuseum, I forgetwhichone, there is thispieceof jadethat’sgot11Chinese characterson it that are anexplanaHonofahighlevelQigongtechniqueknownas thesmalluniverseandthatjadehasbeenproventobe5000yearsold,butIthinkqigongisconsiderablyolderthanthat.Imagineifyoudrewadotonapieceofpaperandthenstartdrawingtwolinesfromthatdot,if youhavejust1degreedifferenceintheanglebetweenthelinesovera5000yearperiodyou’llfindthatthere’sabiggapbetweenthosetwolines.Nowaddintothemixdifferentreligiousbeliefsdifferentsocialeconomic,andallthedifferentkindofthingsthathappeninhistoryandsociety.

NowBodhidharmahadaverydifferenttakeonthis,hefeltthatspiritualculHvaHonisprobablythehardestundertakingthatahumanisgoingtodo,andtobeabletodothatmuchbeLeryourbodyneedstobeingreatshape,soBodhidharmafindingthemonksoftheShaolinmonasteryinpoorhealthtaughtthemaseriesof3differentexercisesbuttheonethatwe’llfocusonistheShaolin18LohanHands.

Andthenyouhavethebiguniverseandsoon,Idon’treallywanttotalktoyoutoomuchaboutthesetypesofQigong,becauseIwouldnevereverwanttolearnthesefromabook.Smalluniverseandbiguniversearesuchhighlevelartsthatyou’vegottolearnthemfromamaster,it’sassimpleasthatinmyopinion.

Marcus: Theselevels don’treallyexist,theyaremorelikeof anaid forpeoplelearningaboutQigong. Generallyyouhave:

o MedicalQigong‐whichisrelaHvelylowlevelandisusedforovercomingillness.

o DynamicQigong ‐ qigong exercisesforthosewhoarehealthyandwant tostay thatwayand increasetheirenergy.

o QigongfortheScholar‐ thathelpsstudents andthoseinterestedincreaHvitytoexpandanduHlizethepoweroftheirmind.

o Qigongforthewarrior‐awarriorhasgottobeabletomakesplitdecisions,makingtherightdecisionorthewrong decisioninbaLlecouldbethedifferencebetween lifeanddeath.Andfortunatelywedon’tfindourselvesliving insuchHmesanymore.Butobviouslyifyou’reinbusinessyouneedtobeabletomakeadecisionbasedonthefactsthatyou’vegotandyouneedtobeabletomakethatdecisionquick.

Secret2:HowQigongworks

Jordan: We’regoingtolookatTradiHonalChineseMedicineanddiscoverwhatwhyit’ssoimportanttoQigong. Butfirst,perhapsyoucouldgiveusanoverviewofTradiHonalChineseMedicine.

Marcus: Thefirstthingtosayis thatpeoplewhostudyTradiHonal ChineseMedicinestudyitforyears andyears.So,pleasetakeeverythingthat’ssaidhereasbeingacompletesimplified,gross overview,I’mjustgivingyouaHnysnapshot.

TherearefivemainbranchesofTradiHonalChineseMedicineyoucanconsider.

1. Acupuncture–I’msureeverybodyhasheardofacupuncture.

Jordan: Verygood,sowhatdoesQidointhebody?Wheredoesitflow?Howdoesitwork?

Marcus: Excellent,so,againthisreallyisthe‘ina nutshell’version,Igointothisinmuchmoredetailinthehomestudycourse.Sorememberthisisanoverview,butitwillhelpourunderstanding.

TherearetwocoreprincipalsofTradiHonalChineseMedicine:

1. Yin/YangTheory ‐ it’s veryimportant,I’msureeverybody’sheardofyinyangyouknowtheroundsymbolwiththetwofishchasingeachother.Yin/Yang theoryisaconceptyoucan’tgointoashopandbuyabagofyinyoucan’tgetsomeyangandnothing isabsolutelyyinoryang.It’satheoryofrelaHvitynotlikeEinstein’seequalsmcsquared.

ImaginethatIhadadog,supposemydog issathereandovertherewehavean ant. I could say that the dog was yang in this relaHonshipbecauseit’sbig and theantwasyin becausecomparedtothedog it’ssmall

Now, suppose we take a different relaHonship, we bring an elephant into the room. In this newrelaHonshipthedognowbecomesyin,becausetheelephantisyang(big).BearinmindthatthistheoryofrelaHvitydoesn’tjustapplytomaLersofsize.

Nothingisabsolutely yinandnothing isabsolutelyyang.WhenweapplyYin/Yang theorytohealthwetake theaspectof yintobeourbodiesnatural ability tobehealthy, it’snaturalforyoutohavegoodhealth,okay that’s an important fact.Andthenwetaketheyang aspects to beanything thatcausesillnesswhetherit’sbacteriainfood,oradverseweathercondiHons,orstressandworry,that’salllabeledasyang.Andaslongaswehaveyinyangharmony,thenwe’llhavegoodhealth.

2. Meridians ‐ think of themeridiansastheenergystreamswithinyourbody.Therearetwelveprimarymeridians,primarybecausetheypassthroughinternalorgans.Andthereareeightsecondarymeridians.

Whenyour vitalenergy orQi isflowing harmoniously through theseenergy streamsinthebodyyouhavewhatwecallgoodhealth.Iftheflowof qiisblockedthanyoucanhavesickness, illness,disease.Theseverityoftheblockagewillrelatetotheseverityoftheillness. If ablockagestopstheflowofqicompletely,deathquicklyfollows.

WeneedtobeawareofthesetwocoreprincipalsofTCMbecausewithoutthemqigongcan’tpossiblywork.

Marcus: Whenyou’repracHcingQigongwhatyou’redoing isyou’reseekingtoinfluencetheflowofenergysoyou’retrying to generatemoreenergy moreisnot parHcularly a good term for it, you’re trying to get ridof theblockagestoharmoniousenergyflow.

Qiif youlikehasanintelligenceallof Itsown,soforexamplelet’ssaythistablewasona slantandItookthewaterfromthevaseandIpoureditout,thewaterwouldjustfalloffthetable.Thewaterdoesn’tthinkaboutflowingoffthetable, itjustdoes.Waterflowstothelowestpointnaturally. Jordan: Liverdisease

Marcus: Stress, Heart disease, headaches, diabetes, asthma and so on. Regardless of the name you give to thesymptomsoftheillness,fromaTradiHonalChineseMedicineviewpointtheonlyillness thatthereis,is thisyin‐yang disharmony. Forexample let’s say I’vegot sicknessand diarrhea.Whatmighthavehappened?Well Imighthaveeatenaneggmayonnaisesandwichatlunchwhichwas2weekspastit’ssellbydateandriddledwithsalmonella.

Eventhoughmyyin(mybodiesnaturalabilitytolookaUeritself)is quitehighandstrong,thereissuddenlyamassiveincreaseintheamountofyangcausingagentsinmybodyandasaresultIgetsick.

RegardlessofthesymptomsfromaTradiHonalChineseMedicineviewpointthereis onlyoneillnessandthatillnessisyin‐yangdisharmonyandifwecanrestorethisharmonyyouhavegoodhealthagain.

Jordan: Okay so when thisharmony, we get the harmony back, what’s actually occurred in the body to get thatharmonyback.HowdoesQigongachievethat?

Marcus: The causesof yin‐yang disharmony are blockages to harmonious energy flow through themeridians, theenergystreams,ofthebody.

Qigongseekstoremovetheseblockages,andtoaidunderstandingwecancategorizeblockagesinto4types:

Physical– theseareusuallycausedbypoorpostureorphysical injurytothebody,likeacutorablowof somekind.

Emo:onal –constantlybeinginanegaHveemoHonalstatei.e.worried,stressful,fearful,anxiousetcwilleffecthealth.

Mental–themaincauseofmentalblockagesisobsessivethinking,orthinkingtoomuch.

Spiritual–depressionisperhapsthemostcommonexampleofaspiritualblockage.

Nowobviouslywhensomethinghappenstousitdoesn’tjustcauseaphysicalblockageoramentalblockage,becausewe’reholisHcbeingssomethingcanhappentous anditusuallyhasaneffectonallfouraspectssoit’simportanttokeepthatinmind.

When we’re pracHcing Qigong we’re seeking first of all to get rid of thephysical, emoHonal, mental andspiritualblockagessothatwehaveharmoniousenergyflow,whichmeanswehaveyin‐yangharmony. Oncewehaveachievedthiswethenseektoincreasetheflowofenergysothatwehavevitalityandlongevity.

Perhaps themostuseful ‘takeaway’fromthissecretisthatfromtheTradiHonalChineseMedicineviewpointthereisnosuchthingasan incurable illness.Butthere’s acaveattothat. Itdoesn’tmeanthatTradiHonalChineseMedicinecancureeveryillness.If theillnesshasbeenleUuncheckedfortoolongthenitmaynotbepossibletofullyrestoreyin‐yangharmony.

Thinkofahosepipewithalotofbendsandit’sbeenoutsideforthelastsixyearsandhasn’tbeenused,ifyousuddenly,turnonthetapandputalotof pressure in,you’regoing toget trouble. It’s notagreatanalogybecausemeridiansdon’thavedefinedboundarieslikethat,butitgivesyouanidea.

Jordan: Secretnumberseven. Thisqigong isstarHngtosounda bittoogood,andI’msurepeoplewanttoknow,arethereanyflaws,isthereanybodyit’snotfor,isitforabsolutelyeverybody,isthereanythingwrongwithit?

Marcus: That’sagoodquesHon.Imean,the,whilsteveryonecanbenefitfromtheShaolinarts,theShaolinartsarenotforeverybody.IrememberwhenIfirststartedlearning,10years agonow,IquicklyrealizedtherewerethreemajorflawswithShaolinqigong.Thefirstoneisthatitreallyisbestlearneddirectlyfromamaster,andatthatHme,mymasterlivedseventhousandmiles awayfrommeandspentninemonthsoftheyeartravelingaroundtheworld. So Ihad lots ofHmewhereIhad quesHonsand it tooka whiletogetananswer,which isnt’ abrilliantwaytolearn,

Thesecondflaw, if youlike,isthatyouhave got todothework,nobody candoitforyou. Remember,wetalkedaboutthemaster,themethod,andthestudent? Themastershowsyoutheway,butyoumustmaketheeffort. Qigong isnothirtydaymiraclecure, youhavetodothework,andthat’sfiUeenminuteseverysingleday.Ifyou’rehardcore,ifyouwantthefasttracktoresultsandbenefits,you’lldothirtyminutes–you’lldoafiUeenminutesessioninthemorningandafiUeenminutesession intheevening.
