MAPLETON FOREST MEMORIES 3

After about 20 years at the Day Use Area, it was decided, in 1967,

to move the forestry barracks onto their present site in Mapleton.

The move came as a result of Union pressure to try to give the

forestry workers better living conditions. Access to electricity was

the chief goal.

The Forestry Department bought the corner block, where the Men’s

Shed now stands, from the Richards family who owned and

operated a case mill next door. Over 100 slash pines, that the

Richards had planted, were bulldozed off the land so that the

barracks could be re-sited.

Moving the barracks was a difficult job. The road was narrow,

winding and gravel with many overhanging trees. The building was

not broken up so Ron says that there were many tight fits. A

contractor from Eumundi did the relocation with forestry workers

clearing trees and branches to allow the move. New stumps were

cut from the forest by the workers.

After the barracks were re-sited, the garages and vehicle ramp

(now demolished) were soon added. The bigger garage was used

to house the three-ton, cable hoist, petrol Bedford truck that the

Forestry Department supplied about 1949/1950. A four-wheel

drive Toyota tray back went in the smaller garage. The Toyota had

replaced a Landrover in about 1962. Both the Bedford truck and

the 4WD could carry water for firefighting. The Bedford had a 600

litre tank and the tray back 200 litres. Obviously the fires had to

be pretty small for these volumes to be useful.

Poisons etc were kept in a separate storage area away for the

garages. Fuel for vehicles had to be supplied from Beerburrum.

The tray back would be dispatched with two 44 gallon drums for

fresh supplies with the round trip taking over two hours. Ron

thought it was Christmas when the Department finally decided to

issue a petrol card so he could buy fuel locally!

HAVE YOU REMAINED PHYSICALLY ACTIVE DURING THE COVID-19 GOVERNMENT

RESTRICTIONS? There are known links between physical activity, mental health and well being. These unprecedented times have led to many disruptions to daily life following restrictions imposed to combat the spread of COVID-19, which may have impacted physical activity patterns and resulting mental health and well-being.

USC Researchers (Dr Dan Wadsworth, Dr Mia Schaumberg and Assoc. Prof. Chris Askew) have teamed up with colleagues in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand to investigate the effects of restrictions imposed by different Governments in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic on these factors. USC is leading the Australian arm of this survey to understand the effect of our Government’s restrictions on individual’s physical activity, mental health and wellbeing, and compare our findings to other regions throughout the world.

You can access the survey here: https://bit.ly/35mhmOQ

The Australian survey is being released with the endorsement of Exercise and Sports Science Australia. The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, and your responses will help us to understand how physical activity, health and well being have been impacted during different stages of COVID-19 Government restrictions. We also hope that it will better prepare us to support people in achieving and maintaining optimal health and well being should be encounter such events in the future.

THE LIFT PROJECT SUNSHINE COAST

REGISTER NOW, BUT BE QUICK

Hi Everyone I am very excited to inform you that the Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Lift Lifestyle Medicine has launched The Lift Pro-ject Sunshine Coast FREE to all Sunshine Coast LGA residents – The Lift Project Sunshine Coast is an evidence-based, holistic and comprehensive online emotional health and wellbeing program that draws together the latest research from Neuroscience, Life-style Medicine and Positive Psychology – with an emphasis on mental wellbeing. It is presented by the founder of the program, Dr Darren Morton. Dr Morton is an internationally-recognised Life-style Medicine expert, and is an Associate Professor and lead re-searcher at the Lifestyle Research Centre at Avondale University College, NSW. The lessons are comprehensive and explore the science around that week’s theme, however they are presented in an easily under-standable manner. Topics include: speaking positively, being phys-ically active, expressing gratitude and hope, eating healthy, nur-turing relationships, immersing in natural environments, resting well and serving others. They are designed to be fun and educa-tional, and provide people with the strategies to manage stress and anxiety, better deal with challenges, and improve vitali-ty and life satisfaction. The lessons are suitable for EVERYONE and enhance short and long-term resilience skills – all of which are needed in these unprecendented times! Registrations for The Lift Project Sunshine Coast are online, free and easy; once registered, people will receive a weekly email link-ing to that week’s lessons, of which there are ten in total. After watching that week’s video, people will be given some simple and fun challenges to try out, and will be encouraged to write down the learnings and reflections in the provided e-journal, and to share these learnings with friends and families. The first roll-out of the programme commences on Monday 18 May 2020, and each week after that for ten weeks un-til Monday 20 July 2020, a new email and link to that week’s les-son, will be sent – that week’s lesson is only available for that week. ‘SIXTH WEEK AT HOME’ QUIZ ANSWERS 1. On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me Six geese a laying.

2. The sixpence was the only predecimal Australian coin which never had the design on its reverse side altered. That is especially surprising given that the coat of arms depicted was obsolete for most of that time, having been superseded by the current one in 1912.

During World War II, between 1942 and 1944, sixpence production was supplemented by coinage produced by two branches of the United States Mint. Coins struck at the San Francisco mint (1942–1944) carry a small S below the coat of arms, while those from the Denver mint (1942–1943) have a small D in the same place.

3. In what configuration are the V6 engines? Four-cylinder engines commonly come in "straight" or "inline" configurations while 6-cylinder engines are usually configured in the more compact "V" shape, and thus are referred to as V6 engines.

The decision comes after a series of pilot matches.

6. Henry 8th had six wives. Three of them has the same first name. Catherine

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a 1958 20th Century Fox film.

9. A powerful tool set of six colours, which once learned, can be applied immediately to improve people’s productivity, creative thinking and cooperation. Six Thinking Hats

10. The Six Nations Championship is an annual international men's rugby union competition between the teams of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. The current champions are Wales, who won the 2019 tournament.
