Brockman concerning cable requesting definite dates the DD expects to bein Vienna. He was informed that itinerary had not been completedpending confirmation of space; that a reply should indicate theCommanding General would be advised the exact dates as soon as

they were established.

He advised there was a guarantee of suitable space - but had notbeen informed of exact location; definitely will not be Promenade orMain Decks.

The DCI was fully briefed by ADSO and Exec for I&S on background informa-tion of William H. Smythe.

Col. McDonnell, OCS, queried date of DD's return to city.

DCI approved ORE 31-48 "Vulnerability toSabotage of Petroleum Installations in Venezuela, Aruba, andCuracao.".

The DCI acknowledged letter from Ambassador Wiley, Tehran (ER 9450),dated 23 April, having reference to assignment of additionalpersonnel.

The Deputy Director lectured at the Command and General Staff College,Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

By memo dated 18 May, the DCI was advised of appointment of Maj. Gen.Chas. 0. Cabell, AO-16121, as U. S. Air Force member on IAC,Maj. Ben. McDonald, relieved. (ER 9538)

The Secretary of Defense requested DCI to undertake a review of theintelligence outlook in the Middle East. Mr. Childs, ICAPS, wasdirected to initiate action of request.In this connection, Col. Lash, ID, GS,USA, called the DeputyDirector to offer the Army's cooperation in preparation of report.Mr. Childs was so advised - and passed word on to Col: Clinch,who is doing the "spade work".

Mr. SPG, OSO, reported that he had interviewedapplicant; that he felt a definite interest in applicant; but desired towithhold decision until he could discuss the matter with Mr. Cassady.He stated would be called for another interview after Mr.Cassady returned.

Mrs . Haight, was queried' regarding definitespace assignment. stated it was her imnressin that Ont allowayhad said he would take it up persona na CalledCol. Galloway to inquire and he advised ihad been instructedto get the desired space. I mentioned my telephone conversation withthe Deputy Director concerning possibility of obtaining definite andsuitable space on next sailing. He promised to handle.

Mr. Chicago, called to advise the Deputy Director thathe was going abroad July 16th, Queen Elizabeth, and offered to do anyerrands. (Mrs.| and 15-year old daughter are accompanying himon trip -- and, he is having car sent over.)He will be at Dorchester Hotel, London, on p.m. of 21 July.Will be in London about a week; then fly to Geneva; to Italy forabout ten days; is keenly interested in Spain and intends to visitBarcelona and Madrid; back to Geneva; fly to Copenhagen.Mr. | is at Mayflower Hotel until Friday afternoon but hopesto return here in several weeks.I took the liberty of mentioning the DD's tentative plan to returnfrom a trip about July 23 -p and he expressed hope to be able to seethe DD.I also mentioned the postal card, addressed to Mr. which hasbeen held in this office since November 47.

Mr. W. Averell Harriman, roving ambassador for ECA, called on the DCIto offer assistance in any way possible. In this connection, theDCI requested Asst. Director, ORE, to prepare a list of questionsfor Mr. Harriman's guidance.Also, Mr. Harriman, asked for the assignment of a young man - toact as aide -- who knew our men in the field -- knowledge of French, etc.,and who could write reports. (Mr. Harriman had stated he could notwrite reports for us--although had offered assistance.)Col. Galloway was requested to submit to the Director names ofcandidates.

Col. Galloway advised of guarantee of space of Queen Mary; it isreported to be booked up but there should be cancellations,in which case, the DD will be given first opportunity formost suitable space.However, he has requested Transportation to endeavor to obtainsuitable space on the Maliretania and the Queen Elizabeth -

in other names.Also, there is an AG regulation against sending wives intoGermany -- believe this cqn be resolved thru Gen. Lewis; asresult Mrs. Wright's visa has been held up.

In connection with the request from SecDefence for review of currentintelligence in Middle East, etc., the reply has been writtenbut the PCI is holding until Monday.

Captain Dennison, Naval Aide to Pres, called to inquire if there wasnot a typographical error in the Weekly Summary, page 2, para 3,line 3 F#disarmament". Asst. Director, ORE, was contacted andstated the word should be "rearmament" - Capt. Dennison advisedand requested to correct the President's copy of the Weekly.

Any call from W. H. Smythe for the Director - he should be informedthat the Director has not returned -- is still out of town.

Reference State cable 561, control 6603, 20 May-- the DCI has askedState to endeavor to convince the Egyptian Ministry of Communica-tions'not to take over the monitoring station at Cairo for twomonths--at which time our station on Cyprus will be completed--and at Ghat time, we will be glad to turn over the Cairo station tothem.

(2) Policy on sending British our publications. It is notthe question of withholding information on Latin America butonly information that might be contrary to British policy.0E now screens all publications and makes recommendations, ththen DCI or Deputy Director decides whether or not it shouldgo

(3) OCD cards that are disseminated to Army, Navy. Armyhas requested two additional sets of cards to send theirbrahohes in the Far East and in Austria. DD said CIAshould oppose sending the cards outside the U.S. If Armysends the information then we are not responsible. Dr.Andrews will prepare a memo to this effect for DD's signature.
