Dear IRMSA Members
SAQA Mid-Term Monitoring Site Visit
On Wednesday 25 September 2019, the South African
Qualifications Authority (SAQA) visited the IRMSA offices to
conduct a mid-term monitoring site visit.
The purpose of the visit was to confirm that the Institute still
meets the requirements of the SAQA policy and criteria for
recognising a professional body and registering professional
designations for the purposes of the National Qualifications
Framework (NQF) Act. An associations status as a recognised
professional body can be retracted if it no longer meets the
criteria.
We are pleased to advise that the SAQA officials were satisfied
that the Institute is compliant and will recommend that the
status as a recognised professional body be retained. A full
evaluation will be undertaken prior to the re-recognition renewal
in 2022. This is a great achievement for IRMSA in light of the
challenges professional bodies are facing especially in terms of
protecting the interest of the public whilst always ensuring its
members are always put first and are kept top of mind.
We will keep members posted when we receive the formal
SAQA evaluation.

September was a hard month to be proudly South African!
Sandwiched between Womans’ and Heritage months we had to
readdress and reflect on the horrific incidents of femicide and
xenophobia which continue to plague our nation.
It resonated with a passage in a fictional book I recently read
which spoke about the power of rage and how we do inhumane
and unthinkable acts. The passage highlights that people get
angry and upset over things. In a world of have or have nots, it
is the humiliation of not having which drives feelings of
powerlessness and deprivation. All of negative emotion fuels
rage, which builds continuously looking for a target to express
anger.
In a world with less resources and opportunity, and increased
competition we mentally segregate ourselves in camps of us and
others. Those who are different, whether it is the colour of your
skin, the way you speak, your gender or the place you come
from. Who can do almost anything to the other. It doesn’t
matter if this other is actually guilty or any crimes, because it is
a matter of emotion not logic. Angry people aren’t interested in
justice the just want an excuse to vent their rage.
We trample the world in a rush to blame others for our pain.
Now, I don’t necessarily agree with the above generalisation or
that people don’t have a valid reason to feel anger. My concern
is how we manifest our feelings of anger, how we find groups
who we perceive to have less power and therefore dehumanize
them, ignoring the basic rights to safety or ownership or dignity.
But, given our legacy isn’t that what we were taught.
A couple of months ago, I came across research on the morality
and cultures across different regions in the world and it was
noted that most common moral principle is the concept of
ownership and not stealing. However, given the high profile
examples, we, South Africans seemingly have a view of taking
something just because the opportunity arose, just taking a gap.
As IRMSA we have over the years echoed and highlighted the
continuously and widening inequality in our country and when
we see the haves overriding the basics of taking that which they
have no rights to, what chance do we have preaching the law to
the many people who don’t have.
Lets take this opportunity to be consistent in our rules and
application of what is right or wrong, not expecting our peers to
do the lawful thing when our leaders seemingly do as they
please.
And most importantly – lets find the right outlet for our rage,
and outlet which doesn’t stem from the seeds of apartheid

Traits of Future Chief Risk Officers
Written by Sidney Mongala, Director: Risk Management
at Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services
The way we do business today is 1000 times advanced than it
was done in the last millennium, 100 times advanced than was
done in the last century and 10 times advanced than was done
in the last decade. This is an indication of how rapid life
changes. The more our lives are advancing, the more the need
for advanced ways of doing things, the more complex the risk
environment evolves

Risk Appetite and Tolerance Training
14 October (DBN)
The ISO 31000:2009 definition of Risk Appetite shows that it is
concerned with the kinds of risk an organisation prefers to take
as well as the level to which it wants to expose itself. For many
organisations, some of the largest risks they face relate directly
to their major sources of income and taking these risks
underpins their business model. Risk Tolerance then relates to
an organisation’s willingness to tolerate or retain risk after risk
treatment has taken place.
