Character Ethic • However, during the 150 years or so that preceded
that period, the literature on success was character oriented. It emphasized the deeper principles and foundations of success. This philosophy is known as the Character Ethic, under which success is attributed more to such characteristics as integrity, courage, justice, patience, etc.

Habit #1Be Proactive
Based on the work of Stephen Covey
9
What happens to a bottle of soda when you shake it up?
It EXPLODES!
10
Sometimes things go wrong, and we feel
shaken up. As a result, we might EXPLODE on
someone or something. This is called being REACTIVE. Has this
ever happened to you? Explain what happened
and why. Was this a good way to let go of all of your feelings? Why
or why not?
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
11
you make a choice about how you react to the things that happen
in your life. You act like a water bottle. You
might get shaken up or mad, but you stay calm
and don’t explode!
When you are PROACTIVE,
12
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Is it hard to stay calm (like a water bottle) even when things don’t go your
way? Why or why not?
What steps could you take to be more
PROACTIVE and calm when things aren’t going
well?
13
Proactive vs. ReactiveWhen you are REACTIVE, you could explode at any minute. Things happen and they “catch you off
guard”. You aren’t ready for things that might happen. You deal with things when
they happen instead of being prepared.
When you are PROACTIVE, you make good choices
about how you respond to something happening. You
are always ready with a calm attitude. You do
things to make sure that the right things will
happen. You are prepared for anything that might
happen. When things don’t go your way, you aren’t
happy, BUT you stay calm.
14
How do you feel on days like this?
15
What about sunny days like this?
16
If you could “carry the weather with you”….
you could have a good day no matter
what comes your way.
17
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Do you think it is possible to carry your
weather with you? What do you think this
means? How would your life be different if
you could carry happiness or peace with you no matter
what things happen?
18

Things you CAN’T control or change:•Other people•The weather•Things you did wrong in the past•How other people treat me•Homework
Circle of InfluenceThings you CAN control or change:•Your attitude•Your mood•Your reaction to good and bad things that happen•How I treat other people
Can you think of other examples from your life?
20
Be Proactive• Change how you handle things. Make a choice
to be positive and focus on those things that YOU can change.
• Make a positive difference in your family, your business, your community and the world!

How could you be more
proactive?
Habit #2Begin with the
End in MindBased on the work Stephen Covey
23
I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a
difference. I am an important part of my business. I look for ways to be a good
citizen.
24
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
What is “the end” for you? What do
you hope to be doing ten years
from now? Twenty? Make a list of things
you want to do in your life.
25
Draw a picture of something that
represents you. It could be an animal,
plant, machine, a food, etc. Explain why you chose what you did.
Before you figure out the “end”, you have to take a look
at who YOU are!
26
In ten years a newspaper decides to do a story about YOU! They interview four people about you. These could be
friends, colleagues or family. What would you want them to say about
you?
27
Mission Statement, Part 1:Write your name in a circle. Out from the circle, write words
that describe you.
YOU
Artistic
Athletic
KindReader
28
Mission Statement, Part 2:
Now think about what kind of person you WANT to be.
Make a list.I want to be a:1.Hard worker2.Good student3.Kind person4.Talented artist
29
Mission Statement, Part 3:Use the two lists to write a mission statement. This is a sentence or paragraph about the person you want to be.
Here are some example:
My mission is to:• Laugh a lot• Learn as much I can• Work hard at home, work and in my
sports• Be kind to others• Take good care of myself.• To get better at my art.
30
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
How does saying “no” sometimes help you with
“beginning with the end in
mind”? What things do you have to say no
to?
31
Finish these sentences:~If my future had no limits, I
would choose to be…..
~I want to be a person who…
32
How good are you at beginning with the end in
mind? I always keep
the end in mind.
I only think about today.
Why did you rate yourself this way?
Habit #3Put First
Things FirstBased on the work of Stephen Covey
34
I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to
things I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan.
I am organized.
35
Going for Your Goals
At Home Goals At Office Goals
Set two or three goals for at home and for at
school.
36
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Sometimes not being brave gets in the way of
doing things that are important to you. Putting
first things first might means putting aside your fears to reach your goal. Has fear ever kept you from doing something great or important?
Explain.
37
Big Things and Little Things:Putting first things first means planning your time around the most important, BIG things in your life. Then, you can
get to the little things that take your time.
Big, Important Things That Take
Your Time
Small Things, Less Important Things That
Take Your Time
38
Brainstorm some things that you do that
wastes a lot of your time. Sometimes
these things are fun and relaxing. If you do them too much though,
they may get in the way of the important
things.
Time Wasters:
39
Write out your regular schedule
for a full day, from start to finish. Is it organized? Do you waste time, or put first things first?
Organizing Your Days
40
Making it HappenNow choose one goal for home, and one goal for work. Write your
goals in a circle. Out from the circle, write things that you can do to help you achieve those goals.
Memorize my
multiplication facts
Play x games
Make Flash Cards
Practice in the car…
Have somebody quiz
me
41
Where do you fall?
I always put first things
first!
I never to set goals or put first
things first.
How could you be better at putting first things first?
Habit #4Think Win-Win
Based on the work of Stephen Covey
43
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Is this picture a good one for
Think Win-Win? Why or why not? If
so, defend your answer. If not, design
a better one and explain your thinking.
44
I want everyone to be a success. I don’t have to put others down to get
what I want. It makes me happy to see other people happy. I like to do nice things for others. When a conflict
arrives, I help brainstorm a solution. We all can win!
45
Think Win-Win Road Blocks •I’ll step on you to get ahead.•I am a loser. I can’t do anything.•At least I am better than her/him.•I’ll let someone else win again.
46
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Have you ever “stepped on”
somebody else to win? Have you
pushed someone aside so you could
get something good? How does this feel? Give an example.
47
Do you always let other people win? Do you not
raise your hand to answer a question because you
know somebody will answer? Do you let people
jump in front of you? Do you let people treat you
poorly? (If so, you are not practicing Think Win-
Win.) Describe a time when you let people
“step on you” to win.
Human Doormat:
48
How To Think Win-WinIn order to Think Win-Win, you need to be confident in you. You must not
care what others think of you. You will be happy to see others be successful.
Make a word & picture splash to show what
makes you unique.
49
Where do you fall?
Very Good! I want
everyone to do well.
Very Bad! I don’t like to see other
people win.
How could you be better at Think Win-Win?
Habit #5Seek First to
Understand, Then to Be Understood
Based on the work Stephen Covey.
51
Listening Road BlocksSpacing Out:
Your mind wanders when others talk.
Pretend Listening:
You don’t really pay attention to the other
person, but you pretend to. You say “yeah,”, “uh-huh,”
and “cool.”
Selective Listening:
You listen only to the parts that interest you.
Selfish Listening:
You always bring the conversation back to you
and your life. You say things like “I had that happen too” and “I know how you feel.”
52
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
We all have times when we are poor listeners. Which “Listening Road
Block” do you most often use? Explain why this happens.
53
Everybody wants to be listened to. When people feel like you listen, they are more likely to like you. So, be a good listener,
and you’ll have lots of friends.
I’m All Ears
What are some ways that you can show people that
you ARE listening?
Who is a good listener? Create a list of people that you know that listen well.
54
Sometimes you have to listen with your eyes as much as you listen with your ears. People say a lot with their body language and facial expressions.
Listen With Your Eyes:
55
Emotion Charades:Find a partner. Practice ‘listening with your
eyes”. Choose an emotion to try to express just with your face and body. You can not use words.
•Angry•Sad•Embarrassed•Tired•Happy•Thinking•Bored
•Impatient•Scared•Worried•Relaxed•Frustrated•Surprised•Stressed
•Confused•Flattered•Nervous•Annoyed•Interested
56
Mirror, Mirror
To be a good listener, mirror back what someone says. Repeat back in your
own words what the person is saying. Use statements like “You seem to be
feeling…” and “So what you are saying is…”
57
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Have you ever had a time with your family or friends when you knew that you
needed to “zip it” and just listen? Why is it important to do this sometimes? How does this help the person
you are listening to?
58
Are you a good listener?
Very Good
Listener
Not Such a Great
Listener
How could you be a better listener?
Habit #6Synergize
Based on the work of Stephen Covey.
60
I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different
from me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems. I
know that “two heads are better than one”. I am a better person when I let other people into my life and work.
61
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
They say that, “Two heads are
better than one.” Do you agree or disagree? Why?
62
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Make a list of times when you
have to work with other
people at office, home or in your
social gatherings.
63
Journal Entry orDiscussion Starter:
Everybody is different, or unique. In what ways is this a good
thing? How does this help you when you are
working with a group on a project?
64
How does everyone being different make
things harder? How can you
overcome these challenges? Would it be easier if everyone
had the same personality, looks,
talents and interests?
65
Celebrate Differences:Pair up with someone you don’t usually work/play with.
Come up with at least five differences and five things you have in common.
