7 Developing a State of Minds honoring on receipt of April 5,2007 WHEREAS, The Connecticut State University System Foundation has voted to confer its 2007 Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award on 12 graduating Connecticut State University System undergraduate students, and WHEREAS, The 12 recipients have been selected from approximately 4,000 graduating seniors, and WHEREAS, The criteria for selection for this award include service to family, university or community, as well as outstanding academic achievement, and WHEREAS, Maryann Abogunde, a senior biomolecular science major at Central Connecticut State University, will graduate having achieved a 3.85 GPA, and WHEREAS, During her tenure at Central, her many accomplishments included being a member of CCSU's Partners in Science, Great Explorations and Bulkeley High School's science-enrichment programs; volunteering to tutor elementary though college students through the CCSU Center for Africana Studies; serving as President of the Biology Club, President the African Student Organization, secretary of the Caducean Club, public relations officer of the Africana Studies Association and a member of the International Relations Club and NAACP CCSU chapter; and being awarded a 2004 Faculty/Student research grant and giving two poster presentations at the 59th Annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference; and WHEREAS, Maryann Abogunde has been selected by the Connecticut State University System Foundation to receive its Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees for the Connecticut State University System commends Maryann Abogunde for her academic and service achievements, congratulates her on receipt of the Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, and extends its best wishes for a happy and successful future. WHEREAS, Jillian Amato, an elementary education major from Central Connecticut State University, graduated in December with a 3.87 GPA, and

WHEREAS, During her tenure at Central, her many accomplishments included writing a thesis entitled "The Effect of the 'Model Minority7 Stereotype on Asian American Students in American Schools" and receiving the Department of Teacher Education Honors Award; volunteering to help students at CCSU and Bristol middle school in mathematics; serving as president and treasurer of the Education Club and as a natural helper and peer educator for Central's Mental Health and Addiction Services; and being a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Golden Key International Honour Society; and

WHEREAS, Jillian Amato has been selected by the Connecticut State University System Foundation to receive its Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, therefore, be it

WHEREAS, The criteria for selection for this award include service to family, university or community, as well as outstanding academic achievement, and

WHEREAS, Laura Jensen, an anthropology major at Central Connecticut State University, will graduate having achieved a 3.86 GPA, and

WHEREAS, During her tenure at Central, her many accomplishments included minoring in archaeology and cross cultural analysis, writing her capstone thesis on the American Colonization Society; representing the CCSU Anthropology program and the Archaeology Expo at UConn, where she created a fun project for children to expose them to the kinesthetic experience of archaeology laboratory work; cataloguing artifacts for the Archaeology Laboratory for African American Diaspora Studies; traveling to Nicaragua, volunteering her time to the Federation for the Full Development of Rural People and creating a website to assist in fundraising for the program; and volunteering for the Friends of the State Archeologist, mentoring at Vance Elementary School and fundraising for CPTVIWNPR; and

WHEREAS, Laura Jensen has been selected by the Connecticut State University System Foundation to receive its Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, therefore, be it

WHEREAS, Adam Lachendro, health and physical education major at Eastern Connecticut State University, will graduate having achieved a 3.83 GPA, and

WHEREAS, During his tenure at Eastern, his many accomplishments included acceptance into the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Program, the Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society and the Alpha Upsilon Chi international honor society; volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, traveling to New Orleans to build houses for those less fortunate; membership in the HPEISLM Majors Club; serving as co-captain of both his basketball intramural and floor hockey teams; volunteering as an assistant coach in both soccer and basketball for Enfield youth; serving as coordinator for the Teen Center at St. Bernard's Church and volunteering at the Enfield Food Shelf and Enfield Soup Kitchen; and volunteering at the Windham Elementary School's After School Program and at the 2005 and 2006 Special Olympics; and

WHEREAS, During her tenure at Eastern, her many accomplishments included completing her studies in only three years; being named "Academic Leader" of her residential hall and presenting at several academic conferences; serving as president, vice president and secretary, as well as project manager of "ECSU Hits the Streets" for the American Humanics Student Association, president of the Psi Chi psychology honor society, public relations head for the Honor Club, editor-in-chief and sports editor for the yearbook, team leader for the Omicron Delta Kappa Student Leadership Development Program, and treasurer of the Psychology Club; serving as a teacher's assistant, a research assistant and a peer mentor; and helping the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department create and distribute holiday food baskets and repairing homes through the Christmas in April program; and

@ WHEREAS, During her tenure at Southern, her many accomplishments included being named to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and receiving the Collegiate All-American Scholar Award; serving as president of the SCSU chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society and president of the SCSU Financial Management Association, being credited with significantly growing the club's membership and helping reestablish the club through a series of special events both on and off campus; and volunteering as a member of the Guilford VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 7666, where she donated time to both her local community and to supporting troops and veterans; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure at Southern, his many accomplishments included completing his degree in only three years; volunteering as captain and athlete escort for the 2006 summer Special Olympics, Bachelor of Social Work student representative, a member of the Beta Rho Social Work National Honor Society and a member of the Social Welfare Organization; volunteering for Sister Anne Virginie Grimes Health Center, working with residents to help them maintain their independence; being a member of the Columbian Squires, being named Chief Squire in 2002, in which he helped facilitate numerous volunteer activities for his church and community; becoming a member of the Knights of Columbus; and completing an internship at New Haven Superior Court; and

WHEREAS, Kyle H. O'Brien has been selected by the Connecticut State University System Foundation to receive its Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, therefore, be it

WHEREAS, The Connecticut State University System Foundation has voted to confer its 2007 Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award on 12 graduating Connecticut State University System undergraduate students, and

WHEREAS, The 12 recipients have been selected from approximately 4,000 graduating seniors, and

WHEREAS, The criteria for selection for this award include service to family, university or community, as well as outstanding academic achievement, and

WHEREAS, Amber O'Neill Wilk, a secondary education math major at Western Connecticut State University, will graduate having achieved a 3.75 GPA, and

WHEREAS, During her tenure at Western, her many accomplishments included receiving the Grandahl Award, presented to promising future teachers of mathematics who share a love for both math and teaching others; being a WCSU Math Clinic tutor and a member of the Associate Honors Program; volunteering at Connecticut Association for Mathematically Precocious Youth (CAMPY) Day; and completing a Student Developed Study in which she created the entire curriculum for a prospective mathematics education course at Western; and

WHEREAS, Amber O'Neill Wilk has been selected by the Connecticut State University System Foundation to receive its Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees for the Connecticut State University System commends Amber O'Neill Wilk for her academic and service achievements, congratulates her on receipt of the Henry Bamard Distinguished Student Award, and extends its best wishes for a happy and successful future.
