By Jacob PageThe standard three (Year 5) class at Redwoodtown School in 1953 has
had people talking for more than 60 years. So strong were many of the friendships between the then 10-year-olds,
the pupils were dubbed the Redwoodtown Rats. Its not hard to see why, with two sets of twins and two marriages coming
from the group.Four of them still catch up every month in Blenheim some 62 years later.
Continued page 2Claudia Fallen (nee Rogers), Shirley Hawtin (nee Matthews), Janette Sim-mons (nee Matthews) and Janet Hare (nee Page) regularly meet every month after becoming school friends at Redwoodtown School in the 1950s.

Janet Hare and Claudia Fallen still catch up every month and the friendship has endured and thrived with the hands of time.
The class held a reunion thanks to fellow pupil Rolly Wadsworth, in Blenheim ear-lier this week with 13 past pupils arriving from places like Auckland, Hamilton and Ashburton to attend.
We started it two years ago (the 60th jubilee) when one of the twins died but even our teacher, John Hyndman turned up for it, Shirley says.
We thought he was old back then to be honest, but it was lovely to see him, Claudia says.
We probably lived in close proximity to
each other, we were country kids really, Janette says.
We never changed classes much in those days, so we grew up together, Claudia says.
The group decided they would meet up every year in future to catch up and swap stories from their school days,
I remember one boy losing part of his toe when it was chopped off when he was mowing the school lawns, Janet says.
Today it wouldnt be allowed. We had one teacher for all subjects,
Claudia says. We had a school garden which was
quite a big deal back then even though its all the rage now, Janette says.
We always had swimming lessons and played basketball instead of netball,
Claudia says.Discipline was enforced strictly and
Claudia says she remembers getting wrapped over the knuckles with a ruler from time to time.
We never thought about it but we kept in touch with a lot of that class even when they moved away and found jobs and careers, Shirley says.
I remember the Lloyd twins became pilots and they were always first with their hands up when we talked about news of the world because they had a radio at home and listened to the news before school, Janet says.
The quartet says it shows how tight the class was with how willing many of them are to return to Blenheim to meet up once a year.
Redwoodtown Rats stick together after six decades
By Jacob PageChris Faulls was taught the importance of
nature by her mother and now she is using it to help restore the Grovetown Lagoon for future generations.
Chris is part of a hearty group called the Wetland Warriors who can be seen most weeks working to restore the Grovetown Lagoon to its natural state.
The Wetland Warriors hold working bees most Sundays and are active every first and third Wednesday of the month.
The project has been going since 2008 and central to its success has been the 3.8km walking track around the lagoon so the public can enjoy it.
Chris says while the work is quite physical, its also rather relaxing.
Mother showed me the value of nature and I get the benefit of it now.
Thats what we are doing here, we are looking to restore this not for our generation but your generation, your childrens genera-
tion and your grandchildrens generation. The group also receives regular help
from the air force, Outward Bound and Grovetown School.
Funding is a constant battle but a $20,000 grant from Pub Charity will allow them to
build a foot bridge for the walking track. So many people dont know about this
spot but it really is special. For anyone who wants to help, the group
meets at the Wairau Rowing Club club-rooms.

By Jacob Page Marlborough Boys College
principal Wayne Hegarty has made it clear that academic achievement is no longer the poor second cousin at the school.
Wayne and a number of Board of Trustee members and senior staff presented an annual review and future planning meeting for the public on Tuesday night.
The school trumpeted improve-ments in academic achievement and outlined their future plans to enhance and grow the curriculum to offer opportunities to help shape good Marlborough men.
There was no update on the future of both MBC and Marlborough Girls College, with Wayne stating they had not received any new information from the Ministry of Education.
Tonight is not about what might happen with the schools in the future, Board chairman Tony De Reeper says. We have no new
information from the ministry regarding the schooling future but we wish to acknowledge that the Ministry of Education has spent more than $1 million on health and safety projects over the last 12 months at Marlborough Boys College.
Wayne highlighted that in 2009 six out of 10 Year 11 students could expect to get NCEA level one, in 2014 that had risen to eight
in every 10.NCEA level two saw an im-
proved pass rate from 73 per cent to 82 per cent while level three went from 64 per cent in 2009 to 72 per cent in 2014.
Wayne said while the improve-ments were pleasing, more work can be done to improve the sta-tistics.
In 2009 just 11 per cent passed NCEA level one with merit, there were no excellence passes, how-ever in 2014, 49 per cent passed with a merit or excellence grade.
Wayne says improved results could be attributed to increased funds and an emphasis from teachers and staff to make the improvements,
It was also expressed how im-portant it was for students to pass NCEA level two, with the school also keen to open new pathways into trades training.
The school also saw a dramatic increase in scholarships.
For several years we had one,
two, one scholarships each year and last year we got 11, Wayne says.
Wayne expressed the impor-tance of the four pillars of academic achievement, sports, arts and culture and leadership but admitted there had been an added focus on academic achievement which had in turn raised expecta-tions amongst the pupils.
While many senior staff ex-pressed pleasing improvements, Head of Arts and Culture Ngaire Searle lamented a reduction in hours to teach the subjects in class and expected standards to decline.
The ministry is pushing Eng-lish, maths and science and the school is following those lines, she says. But it means our Year 9 drama, art and music classes are given a maximum of 16 to 20 hours class time to learn the subject or generate an interest.
I predict, sadly, a decline in the performing arts over the next few years.
Margaret and Jack Thompson were in The Cornerstone on Wednesday night, taking in some of the South Islands best secondary school jazz bands at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival.
The pair was supporting their son Michael, one of this years judges. Michael was named best drummer at the festival about a decade ago when he was a student at Papanui High School.
On Wednesday night they saw the Marlborough Boys College and Marlborough Girls College combo, Papanui High School and Christchurch
Boys High School perform. The festival continues around
Marlborough tonight, with the gala concert tomorrow night at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre.
The Marlborough Boys College combo of Tas Richards, Kane Wills, Sam Powell, Jesse Paul and Isaac Caldwell are looking to defend the title they won last year.
They are tutored by couple Coral and Tony Thiel, with Tony also composing several pieces of music over the years.
More photos on Wednesday.

The owners of two existing Marlborough businesses are join-ing forces to address a need for storage water reservoirs in the region.
Damit is run by Hamish and Sally Blackwell, who own H Blackwell Contracting, and Matt and Lynne Broughan, owners of Renwick-based irrigation business Liquid Action.
It was founded earlier this year and targets small to medium-sized projects in the wider Marlborough area, especially in those areas af-fected by water permit shutdowns in recent times.
Currently they are completing their second project.
Matt says the group had been talking about starting the business for at least 12 months, but saw an opportunity to act in 2014.
After a dry year last year things got pretty desperate for some people.
There was a bit of a gap in the
market for people who wanted a storage water reservoir to put aside water for years to come.
There was a large demand and
not a lot of supply.Matt says reservoirs are particu-
larly useful for vineyard irrigation. It doesnt take long for clients to
calculate that a lack of water sees tonnage drop.
If we get two to three dry years in a row it pays for itself. Even a twenty-day shutdown can have an effect on the tonnage.
Council have been very proac-tive in making these types of ventures happen.
Matt says Damit can act as a one-stop shop, taking care of the resource consent process, design, construction and irrigation con-nection.
Matt and Hamish have combined resources for the business.
Hamish had several years ex-perience building dams before H Blackwell Contracting was founded a decade ago.
Business flowing at DamitHostel for sale Koanui Lodge & Backpackers, at 33 Main Street, is up for sale. Deadline sale closes at 4pm on August 28. Owners Dave and Reena Tattersfield are selling up after eight and a half years of ownership.
By Adam Poulopoulos The owners of restaurants
Bamboo Garden and Chai-Yo say healthy eating will be a major focus in their newest venture.
Bu-nga Krataitong and Nut-tavut Rodsienglum have bought 17A Maxwell Road, formerly Fans Chinese Restaurant.
They plan to start an Asian fusion restaurant called The Lemongrass, with a particular focus on Vietnamese cuisine and lean, clean eating.
The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner, and the menu will feature a lot of fresh vegetables and herbs.
The pair will run the busi-ness alongside their existing restaurants.
Nuttavut says his experience as a chef in Thailand, South Africa and America gave him the idea.
Every time I go to Thailand I visit five-star hotels and the food is always nice.
Lots of things are changing. Theres lots of Asian fusion at the moment.
Nuttavut is currently creating the menu.
He says it will be heavily in-fluenced by Vietnamese cuisine, but have elements from other countries too.
Bu-nga says The Lemongrass targets a gap in the market.
In Blenheim nobody does Vietnamese food.
We would like to offer more dishes to customers, but the
Bamboo Garden menu is already too big its like a book.
Renovations on the property are
due to be completed this week, and the pair hope the restaurant will open on Tuesday, August 25.

The holes have been dug and lighting poles going in as Council delivers the long-awaited plans to light up the Picton foreshore at night.New lighting is being installed as part of Councils efforts to light the way for ferry passengers walking into town and to improve the overall security of the foreshore. Its a big job involving a lot of underground cabling; members of the public are asked to keep away from the trenches and holes while the wiring goes in and the lighting poles installed. The work is being done in stages so the entire foreshore does not have to be closed to the public. The popular rail and sail area of the foreshore is also getting a refurbishment with the Picton Model Engineers replacing their train track during the coming weeks. Safety barrier fencing will be in place while the work is done.

COUNCIL NEWS
Positive ageing - Ask questions before choosing a rest homeIt is sometimes difficult to know what questions to ask when looking for a rest home for an elderly relative. The choice may depend on the level of care required and the availability of a bed or a room. But Consumer NZ says certification audits show that rest homes do not always meet all the required criteria. Consumer has drawn up a rest home checklist setting out the sort of questions you should ask, covering such things as staff levels, facilities and extras, and hidden costs.
The checklist is on the Consumer website. www.consumer.org.nz.reports/rest-homes/checklistA list of certified providers of rest home services is on the Ministry of Health website: www.moh.govt.nz. The Ministry of Health also publishes key findings from rest-home audits. Before signing an admission agreement, make sure you are clear about what is being agreed with the rest home; the admission agreement should make clear exactly what service and care the rest home
occupant should receive. Community Law Marlborough
is holding a free public seminar on retirement home options including the process for being assessed, retirement home agreements and rights and responsibilities - at St Marys Parish Centre, Thursday 13 August, 10.00 am-2.00 pm including lunch.

Simple or Naive? Lately I read that Council are prepared to pay $100K to bring a Xmas tree, non endemic nor even grown here in a local nursery. Not environmentally friendly neither as ap-parently will be shipped...questions arise here. Then on the other hand CBD s levy proposal to raise $120K AND local disagreements.. So WHAT IF Council releases $100K to town projects also open to free thinkers not only businesses THEN local shops join together in a Xmas tree IF desiring so ??? ( but keeping it local + gaining in promotional adv.)
Is it me? Or have the drivers of Blenheim all of a sud-den forgotten about the give way rules at intersections? Recently every time Im out I either get cut off, or see it happening to others - all by vehicles failing to give way to the left turning vehicle. So to the driver on Kinross Street, Saturday at about 1730 that gave me a mouth full, I suggest you study the road code - or you may end up wrapping your shiny Mercedes round something more solid than you.

Whitebait seasonNot long now and the camper vans will be rolling up to stake their claims on the on Wairau Diversion. Before the season even starts theyll be parked there, keeping anyone else off their spots. MDC, you created this situation. Ban all camping on the diversion, and let the river remain as a place all can whitebait on, and all have a fair chance of finding a spot. I thought MDC was supposed to support the environment, not encourage a native resource to be pillaged by greedy, sock net welding, non working, non tax paying people under the disguise of whitebaiter.

Marlborough Facebook pagesThese pages were created with good intent to share information, experiences & advice to help other Marlburians. The amount of abuse coming up on these pages is DISGRACEFUL! If you dont agree, politely say so. Remember the old sayings... If you havent got anything nice to say then dont say anything at all, or do unto others as you would have them do unto you.I hope you consider these words next time youre about to unnecessarily abuse someone from behind your computer screen. Dear Ed,We pay rates to employ an Events Coordi-
nator (emphasis on the last word of the title).Garden Marlborough, one of the regions
premier showcases is to be held, as always, on Thursday 5th Sunday 8th November 2015.
An influx of visitors to the region and a great weekend for garden lovers and the not-so-green-fingered alike. Right?
But, hey, we also have 300 or so people booked for the Toastmasters Conference from Friday 6th Sunday 8th November 2015 as well.
Now for sure some toastmasters may also be gardeners and some gardeners enjoy a toast or two but they have to sleep someplace too?
If this is someones idea of COORDINA-TION then Ill raise a toast and go gardening!
If it were not for the fact the we all pay for this idiocy it may be funny.
To have people struggling for accom-modation and taking away an image of Marlborough as somewhere where nothing seems well coordinated is not funny at all.
I challenge those responsible to put us all at ease that this double up was carefully planned?
Clapping with one hand!
Dancing boysDear Ed,I write to offer support to the ideas put
forward by your esteemed correspondent Don Coyote regarding the haka performed at rugby matches.
I am very much in favour of sensitive, all inclusive hakas that offend no one and make none feel uneasy.
I very much welcome Mr Coyotes sugges-tion that we have Highland fling and Irish jig etc. represented as suitable responses to the rather warlike and rude Haka with all that unpleasant tongue poking.
Where I dont feel Don goes far enough is that these days there does not seem to be nearly enough representation or participation by gay and lesbian players in rugby.
There do seem to be quite a number of rugby players who look like they would enjoy representing those of transgender and this is all to the good.
Might I suggest that players wear a rainbow arm band in solidarity and perhaps do a little mincing walk before they indulge in all that masculine hugging when a try is scored?
It would help to show exclusivity and would be welcomed by all Im sure.

Q My last meal on Earth would be...
Q One of my best holidayswas...Whenever I get the chance to come back to Blenheim and wet the whistle in the local, Biddy Kates! Shout out to Terry!Q My guilty TV pleasure is...A show called This Town which gives you a taste of how other people live in New Zealand. If your gonna look it up online then start with the Westport episode.
Q Im inspired by...Everything around me. Too often we look too deep and instead dont take advantage of the things we get for free like the funny people around us! Q Whats one thing that youll never throw away?
My last name ; no choice in the matter. Unless I change it to a rockstar name like Butch Dylan!
Q Who would you love to have a meal with?If the Blenheim Sun is paying then everyone is invited!
Q Whats next on your wish list?Id love to come back to Blenheim to do a sell out show in the old theatre I grew up doing shows in before its to late.
Q What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you?
A show I am in is coming to the Blenheim theatre on August 18 before we tour to Australia.
Lindys famous saveloy pie! Earth meals wont even compare with the meals we get on Pluto so best fill the carcass with some serious substance before take off.
Something I can make $200 on.
What would you spend your last $100 on?

By Adam Poulopoulos After six top-ten placings in the
last eight years, Julie Taylor stands at the top of the New Zealand Home Loans ladder.
Julie, from New Zealand Home Loans Blenheim, was announced as the firms number-one ranked client servicing consultant nation-ally at their national conference in Queenstown on Saturday night.
Julie has been with the Blenheim branch for the last nine years. In that time she has finished second, third, fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth.
She says she was pleasantly sur-prised when her name was read out.
I said oh my God! I was rapt. Its great Blenheim has the award
over places like Christchurch and Auckland, with their prices being so much higher.
I try and be in the top 10 every year. Its been a very busy year with the lower interest rate. A lot of younger people have been buying houses.
She says there are several reasons for her success.
I dont do the job for the award. Im passionate and I love what I do.
We all want good service whatever the business, and thats what I think I offer.
We have a team here in Blenheim, and all credit to them for supporting me.
There are about 80 New Zealand Home Loans offices nationwide.
Julie stands a-loan
Julie Taylor with her award.

Get your fertiliser!
The Blenheim Lions Club is running their annual fertiliser fiesta, and you have until Monday to get your fill.
Fertiliser orders close on Monday, August 10.
The club then delivers your order to your door on Saturday, September 5.
All the money raised goes back into the club.
Earlier this year the club distributed flyers around Marlborough as part of the fiesta, which has been an annual club fundraiser for about 30 years.

farmingMarlborough
The Marine Farming Association has rec-ognised Marlborough man Scott Madsens contribution to their industry.
The MFA awarded their Donaghys Out-standing Marine Farmer Award to Scott at the industrys annual dinner in Nelson last Friday.
Scott Madsen grew up in a marine farm-ing family in Marlborough which operated farms in Port Underwood. He now employs 15 staff growing and harvesting 4500 tonnes of greenshell mussels at farms across the Top of the South.
Pioneering work in producing crucially important greenshell mussel spat was also recognised by the Marine Farming Associa-tion, which is Blenheim based and represents Top of the South marine farmers.
At its 42nd annual awards dinner it gave the Sensor Systems Research and Develop-ment Award to SPATnz, a collaboration between the marine farming industry and the Ministry of Primary Industries. SPATnz established the worlds first purpose-built greenshell mussel hatchery this year at Cawthron Institutes Glen facility. It provides an alternative to the variables of harvesting wild spat around the coastline.
The initial benefits are expected to be around $80 million a year by 2026.
Other work on spat production was also recognised by the MFA Merit Award given
to Tasmans Andrea Strang who started as a marine biologist in 1996 with Sealord Shellfish, developing the first commercial volumes of spat reared on rafts in the Marlborough Sounds.
The Port Marlborough Environmental Award went to Hika Rountree and Brian Godsiff, two long standing and respected members of the mussel farming industry for
their contribution to the MFAs Environment Strategy in the Marlborough Sounds and Tasman/Golden Bay area.
Ellie Kerrisk who started her aquaculture training on the NMIT Aquaculture course and was top student for both years and who now works at SPATnz won the Ngai Tahu Seafood Resources award for a recent industry entrant.

Dealing with stressful farmingSupport for farmers, particularly dairy
farmers during the down turn in returns, was vital, but also farmers need to be mindful that they must be careful in alleviating potential stress says Ian Blair, Top of the South Rural Support Trust facilitator.
In a report to a recent Marlborough Feder-ated Farmers monthly meeting he said the Rural Trust was constantly recommending three strategies for farmers:
1. Get a medical check2. Before the production season with lamb-
ing etc, starts get some real time off-farm. Budget for a week at least.
3. Ensure when talking to your financial adviser that some time off-farm is built into the budget even if it means some seasonal loss.
Ian Blair reminded farmers the closing date for Rural Assistance Payments would be September 30 . Term of payments will be until the end of February next year.
These payments are to help rural families where there currently is no income to meet day-to-day living expenses. Application forms are available from WINZ or the Top of the South Rural Support Trust.
Ian says farmers needed to fully support each other in the tough times and season.
He assured farmers all information would remain confidential to the Trust, including the anonymity of those supplying data or names.
Understandably there is some stress in the industry over dairy payout prices and weather conditions.

By Adam PoulopoulosDiabetes Marlborough undertook free
diabetes tests in Blenheim this week, hoping to educate locals and catch new cases early.
The blood sugar and blood pressure tests were held at New World on Wednesday afternoon.
Diabetes Marlborough president Mike Blair says there is a new diabetes diagnosis every three days in Marlborough.
He says the testing is an attempt to combat an illness which accounts for about 12 per cent of the national health budget.
Were trying to pre-empt it. Diabetes is the worst thing health-wise in New Zealand at the moment.
People dont know they have it until they
visit the doctortheyre immediately put on pills and medication, and it costs the health system massive amounts of money.
Its like a health warrant of fitness. He says catching it early reduces the likeli-
hood of other problems, such as obesity and heart disease, occurring.
Youll never see diabetes on a death certificate.
When you talk to people about diabetes they say it occurs because you eat too much sugar.
Its from your lifestyle if you dont change that it keeps on coming.
Makos assistant coach Leon MacDonald and six players, including Blenheim locals Joe Wheeler and Quentin MacDonald, were present at the testing.
Tests aim to pre-empt diabetes
Makos lock Joe Wheeler has his blood sugar levels tested by nurse Jacqui van der Geest.

Premier League circus sports talk
There has been a void in life for the past two and a half months, a void only English Premier League football can fill.
This weekend, that void disap-pears.
Off-season intrigue has been kicked up a notch by a colossal TV deal which has seen clubs splashing the cash with voracious enthusiasm, finding thousands of pounds behind every seat cushion they come across.
Through the transfer window storm champions Chelsea and Arsenal have been at the eye.
Arsenal have signed only standout Chelsea (second-string) goalkeeper Petr Cech, and Chelsea have added Radamel Falcao on loan and Stoke stopper Asmir Begovic to replace
Cech. Both managers, Arsene Wenger
and Jose Mourinho, have gone with the less is more philosophy, hoping stability beats upheaval in the long-run.
Meanwhile, in Manchester, both City and United have decided to play some fantasy football, spending the kind of money I dont even have in my dreams.
City found nearly 50 million pounds to spend on Raheem Ster-ling, making him the most ex-pensive English player in transfer history.
He could be the biggest hit Man-chesters seen since Oasis sang Wonderwall or the biggest waste of money since I spent $9.50 on a
piece of pizza at the theatre and then decided I wasnt hungry.
United have signed two schure things to bolster their midfield in Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin, then parted with 30 million pounds to lure forward Memphis Depay from the Dutch league.
It all starts when United play the mighty Spurs on Sunday morning. Buckle up.
Theres also a large rugby game happening in Sydney tomorrow night, which serves as a lead-in to the football only by the time it is being played.
The All Blacks will have to be at their best to tame a much-improved Wallabies outfit, but more on that later.

By Adam Poulopoulos It is crunch time for the
Marlborough Boys College Sec-ond XV rugby side, who sit third in their division with semi-finals fast approaching.
MBC beat Nelson White 28-17 last weekend to take third on the Tasman under-18s ladder with two weekends to go. They have a bye this weekend, before playing fourth-placed Waimea in the final weekend.
MBC are in a three-way race for the final two semi-final spots with Waimea and 5th-placed Nelson Blue, who both have two games remaining.
Manager Brian Milne says the 27-man squad has hit its straps at the right time, led by their forward pack and particularly number 8 Dylan Burns, who is the teams top try-scorer with 11.
The squad has been bolstered by a group of players from Queen Charlotte College, and relatively few injuries in the first XV, which
has reduced the number of promo-tions to the top side.
Milne credits coaching team Graham de Boo and Dave Paul for installing unity in the squad.
When the coaches gel really well it transfers over to the team.
They get 22 or 23 players to training every Monday and Wednesday, and to the boys credit those who have to stand down on the Saturday take it well.
Its not easy to stand down but that competition in the squad brings out the best in the players.
Their motto is brothers and they do play like brothers. Theres a good bond which every good team should have.
He says the travel has also helped bring the team closer together.
You share losses on the way back but you also share the wins.
The laughter in the van on the
way back is always a bit louder after a win.
He says the squad is aiming high, even taking into account runaway leaders Motueka.
Both times weve played them weve lost to them, but both times weve thought we could have done better.
Weve got a real shot at winning this grade.
Unified second XV near season climax
The MBC second XV before a pre-season match earlier this year.
Cycling Blenheim-based cyclist Georgia Catterick has been selected in New Zealands six-person junior squad to compete at the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia. Catterick will compete in the road race and time trial at the championships, which will be held from September 19-27.
CyclocrossThe final round of this years Bikefit 2015 Cyclocross Marlborough Series is being held next weekend. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, August 15 from 6pm at Athletic Park. The meet is not for points. Registration is on the Bikefit website, and from 5:30pm on the day.
