Dear Parents and Caregivers This week signalled a full return to compulsory schooling for children across WA. It was pleasing to note our overall attendance on Monday, 18 May was 91% of all students, exceeding the average daily attendance at our school across first semester of 2019! We still have a handful of students yet to return to school but it has been fantastic welcoming everyone back – it finally feels like a school should again! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students and their families for the ongoing support and understanding they are showing our staff as we navigate the roadmap to recovery from COVID-19. While many of the expectations introduced to combat the risk of infection have been positive, like you, we are looking forward to more of the restrictions placed on our operation being lifted as the state heads into Phase 3 of its recovery planning. Early this term I provided our community with information about our inclusion in an extensive research project into the prevalence and impact of COVID-19 in the wider community. At the time, I was hoping to provide further information to parents around the level of involvement our school will have in the DETECT study being conducted by the Telethon Kids Institute. Unfortunately, due to the ethical approval process associated with such a major study, I am still waiting for this information. I anticipate being able to provide more details about the study early next week, including whether our community will participate in all parts of the research (i.e. Random Asymptomatic Testing) or only the survey, when it will start and how it will be implemented. Parents and Carers will receive further information, a fact sheet and consent forms from me as soon as the ethics approval process is finalised. I appreciate it has been a long time between the announcement and finding out anything further, but as you can appreciate with the magnitude of the project – prior planning is essential. Do not hesitate to contact me at the school should you have any further questions or concerns around your possible involvement in this project. Next Wednesday, 27 May all children at Gosnells Primary School will participate in the 20th Annual National Simultaneous Story Time. Our Year 6 students are busy recording a virtual reading of this years book, Whitney and Britney – Chicken Divas. Following the reading at 9am, classes will complete some fun activities related to the story in order to promote the value of reading and literacy, promote the value and fun of books and promote an Australian writer and illustrator (Lucinda Gifford). Next Friday 29 May we will be holding a School Development Day at Gosnells Primary School We trust our plans to hold the School Development Day at this time provides an opportunity for you all to take advantage of the recently relaxed intra-state border restrictions and make a head start on the WA Day Long Weekend As for staff they will be attending sessions covering De-Escalation Strategies A Whole School Approach to Problem Solving in Mathematics and a Universal Design for Learning approach to Curriculum Delivery at school on this day

Finally I would remind all parents of our expectation that they BE RESPONSIBLE RESPECTFUL and above all else SAFE when picking up and dropping off students at school We are well aware of the parking issues surrounding our school but this is no excuse to put the lives of your children at risk I often see cars double parked parked in driveways and stopped in the middle of the street to pick up and drop off children It is only a matter of time before we are dealing with a tragic accident if this behaviour continues

Another concern I have is the number of students left to cross these busy streets without an adult Did you know the lsquoexpertsrsquo recommend that no child should be crossing the road without an adult until they are at least 10 years old If you are parking on the opposite side of May Street at the end of the day you really should be meeting your children at the gates to the school and not expecting them to cross the road unattended to your parked vehicle The change to pick up routines necessitated by Covid-19 restrictions whereby parents have been asked not to enter the school grounds have had a profound positive impact on the traffic flow and congestion experienced on both May and Clara Streets but like everything ndash we can always BE BETTER We are not asking people to change their behaviour to be difficult we are simply looking out for the safety of all students and this requires everyonersquos support

We are all in this Together Stay Strong Keep Safe See you Soon

Regards

Craig
