Thanks to Mother Nature however, the boys still have nearly half their season left to play in just a 2 week period. With North Linn, Calamus- Wheatland, Alburnett, Lisbon and Maquoketa Valley still on the schedule, the Orioles are in a great position to make a move upward in the standings. What remains to be seen is how the weather may factor in, but regardless, the boys should be ready to go. Last Thursday the O’s hosted the Wildcats of Central City and won the first game 3-0. Kolton Markley was in command on the mound, throwing a 1 hitter, sriking out 11 and walking no one. I took the time to watch his curve ball from behind the back stop and all I can say is whoa, it is a beautiful sight. Offensively, Greg Pauly ripped 2 singles while Trevor Hulett and Peter Brooks each had a double. Markley helped his cause with a 3 RBI hit and it proved to be the game winner. The night cap wasn’t as pretty for the O’s. A 4 run fourth inning surrounded by a run here and there proved to be too much to overcome and Springville dropped game two, 8-1. Hulett had a triple, Markley and Pauly had doubles, but the O’s just couldn’t get much going on the bases. Pauly took the loss giving up just 2 Wildcat hits and Oriole miscues gave Central City the unearned runs. On Friday, the boys hosted Lone Tree in a JV/Varsity match up. The JV game was interrupted by a rain shower so the Varsity took over after it passed and the O’s got off to a poor start. A ten hit, ten run first inning made too big of a def icit to overcome and the outcome was an 18-3 loss for the O’s. Sophomore Jacob Loehr got the start on the mound and the youngster took his lumps admirably. Peter Brooks came in to close and the loss moved the Orioles to 12-7 on the year. Monday was to be a conference match up with North Linn but weather forced another cancellation. This Thursday will be a conference game at home against Calamus-Wheatland. Then on Saturday the boys will have an early wake up call as they go to Alburnett to make up a rain out, the 1st pitch will be thrown at 10am. Next week will be a non-conference game against West Liberty on Monday at Pearl Field in Iowa City. Tuesday will be at Lisbon, Thursday will be at home against Midland (Senior Night) and Friday will be the make up night for North Linn at Troy Mills. That is unless Mother Nature says otherwise. So what do you say Oriole Fans? Let’s play ball! Clockwise beginning below; Markley on the mound; Coach Dlouhy and his infield; Hulett tallying a hit and Nissen doing the same.

ORIOLE BASEBALL TEAM LOOKS TO FINISH STRONG

With an 11-3 conference record, the O’s are currently tied for third place with Maquoketa Valley. Thanks to Mother Nature however, the boys still have nearly half their season left to play in just a 2 week period. With North Linn, Calamus-Wheatland, Alburnett, Lisbon and Maquoketa Valley still on the schedule, the Orioles are in a great position to make a move upward in the standings. LADY ORIOLE SOFTBALL SQUAD WRAPS UP TRI-RIVERS PLAY THIS WEEK

The Lady O’s made things interesting last week and had a little help from the Pirates. After splitting with Alburnett last Tuesday the O’s swept Midland on Wednesday, 9-1 and 18-2. On Thursday they handled Central City winning 9-0 and 6-3. With the 4 wins and a Bellevue Marquette loss to the Pirates, the Orioles moved to 12-4 and nestled themselves in to 2nd place. This week the girls will finish up conference play with Calamus-Wheatland at home on Thursday and then a make up game with North Linn in Troy Mills on Saturday. In the Midland wins Wednesday, Tracy Kilburg went the distance from the circle, managing the early game and striking out 5. Daisha Hall, Rylee Menster and Kerrigan Riley each had 2 hits. In the nightcap, Chrissy Hoogland got the win from the mound allowing just 4 Midland hits. For the O’s, Hall led with 3 singles while Riley and Sarah Matus each added 2. On Thursday, a stronger Central City team visited Binley field and the O’s handled them well in the first game, Kilburg only allowed 2 hits and struck out 7. Riley and Samantha Fitzgerald each had 3 hits and Kilburg and Matus had 2. The evening game was a little closer but still mostly Springville. Riley had 3 more hits and Fitzgerald 2. Hoogland started in the circle and Kilburg closed it out for the O’s who, with the win saw their overall record improve to 19-12, and more importantly, 12-4 in the conference. Friday the girls traveled to Jefferson High School for a tournament and opened up against Independence High School. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead before giving up some timely hits and adding some costly errors. They fell to the Mustangs 6-2. Their second game against Davenport West didn’t go past the 2nd inning before the rain moved in and the day was called to an end. On Saturday the girls returned to Jefferson for a match up with Mediapolis. The O’s only totaled 3 hits, 2 by Kilburg, but they took advantage of Bulldog errors and won it 10-2. Game 2 of the day was against 4A, Sioux City Heelan, a team that shall we say, was very LARGE. After a rough first inning in which the O’s gave up 3 runs, they hunkered down and played solid defense. They fell to the Crusaders just 4-1. Freshman Olivia Dlouhy pitched the full six innings and kept their batters guessing, forcing pop ups that kept our corners busy. Matus, Kilburg and Fitzgerald were the only hitters to find the base path in the game and the lone RBI for the O’s was earned by Senior Eddna Byers who was called on for the sacrifice bunt and she laid it down perfectly. And so we wait to see what the girls can do in their last 2 appearances. Thursday will be senior night and the girls will host a 10-6 Calamus-Wheatland team. Then they’ll hit the road on Saturday to wrap up the 2013 campaign at North Linn, who is 8-6. The bats have seemed to come alive as of late, lets hope the girls can push enough runs across to find 4 more W’s. And mark your calendar—Monday will be the district opener at Binley field. 7pm is start time and Midland returns. A win on Monday earns a re-match with Marquette on Wednesday in Bellevue. Let’s Go O’s!

Clockwise from above; Leanna Mysak beats the tag at home against Midland; Eddna Byers lays down the perfect sacrifice bunt against Heelan; Olivia Dlouhy steals 3rd against Midland; Samantha Frederick takes a cut in the Midland game.

FIRST ANNUAL YOUTH NIGHT A HUGE SUCCESS

Last Wednesday, in between the Varsity softball games against Midland, the youth softball teams of Springville were recognized on Binley Field. Over 20 girls were introduced and after the Varsity teams swept the Eagles, players autographed softballs for the girls. Not a bad tradition to begin. From these photo’s, courtesy of Angie Gloeckner—I’d say we have started something that will continue for seasons to come.

DID YOU KNOW? Senior Oriole baseball player Kolton Markley made the Des Moines Register on Sunday. The hurler is certainly press-worthy, don’t get me wrong—but it is nice to see recognition made by “outside” sources. In last Monday’s road game against Prince of Peace, Markley struck out 20 batters in the 9 inning, 4-2 victory. That performance puts him into a tie for 8th place among state preps pitching in an extra inning game. 1st place? 24 K’s in a 9 inning game. Congratulations Kolton, keep up the good work.

THE FAMOUS AMONG US— OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT… Ever since the softball team got its new catching gear I have been thinking that it reminds me of someone. And then the other night it came to me. Our catchers look just like action figures. They could be doubles on the set of a Transformer Movie. Am I right? Well it’s a Transformer or a Boxelder bug—let’s go with the Transformer.

NISSEN EARNS A NOD FOR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Since 1983, the Cedar Rapids Gazette selects a male and female Athlete of The Year and this past week they announced the 2014 class of candidates. It is no surprise that Springville’s Elias Nissen is one of the male nominees and rightly so. Perhaps the most decorated athlete to wear the black and orange, Nissen has spent the past 4 years dazzling crowds in attendance of Oriole athletic events. From his 80 plus yard scampers on a football field to his much anticipated dunks on the basketball court, Nissen has become that kid that you see the younger boys emulating. His talents aren’t simply limited to those sports, he has also been a state track qualifier and is wrapping up his prep career on the baseball field as a designated hitter. And on top of that he is just that type of young man you want representing your school, community and program. Check out his profile online; http://thegazette.com/aoy2014 Nissen of course will switch to Panther Purple and Gold as he ventures off to UNI in the fall where he’ll play football after a redshirt year. Congratulations Elias—regardless of the winner announced this Sunday, you certainly have brought Springville some great attention—but we aren’t conceding! You are our Athlete of the Year through and through.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… Rocky Ford, Colorado is located in the North Central part of the state. They have 1 public high school that lists their 7-12 enrollment at 422. The community is known for its cantaloupe and watermelon crop so it’s no secret where the high school mascot comes from. With colors of Red and Gold, the “Meloneers” compete in all the usual sports as well as wrestling and seed spitting—just kidding. Their basketball teams play inside their gym aptly named the Melon Dome and their school was profiled in 2012 by Teen Magazine for their unique nick name.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… Alright, the weather is wreaking havoc with the baseball and softball schedules so lets go to Major League Baseball and games scheduled for Saturday: Mariners at White Sox Cubs at Nationals Orioles at Red Sox Astros at Angels The tie-breaker is which of the above 4 games has the highest run total when adding both teams final score? Make your picks and email them to us at [email protected]

DID YOU KNOW? Iowa High School Athletic Association rules monitor the innings that a player pitches in high school baseball games. In a given week (defined as Sunday through Saturday) a pitcher may pitch no more than 16 innings. Additionally, a pitcher cannot pitch more than 9 innings in one day or on 2 consecutive calendar days. If a 9th inning is pitched the player must have 2 days of rest. Lastly, if a pitcher pitches 2 consecutive days with a combined total greater than 4 innings, he must rest for 2 consecutive calendar days. And so this is why the weather has really forced Coach Dlouhy to strategize even more with games next week each night with the exception of Wednesday.

Last year, Le Mars beat Sioux City Heelan to go to the 3A state baseball tournament and soon after had to forfeit because the pitcher threw too many innings without resting for 2 calendar days. The error cost the team a trip to state—surprising to say the least.
