WELCOME TO SHINJU MATSURI 20197 - 15 SEPTEMBER

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you all to the 2019 instalment of Shinju Matsuri, a nine-day celebration of Broome, it’s diverse culture, pearling history and natural beauty.

This year’s program of events ranges from family-friendly, locally focused activities that enliven our community to high-end tourism experiences that will showcase the best our region has to offer to visitors from around the country and the world.

As always, the melting pot of Broome’s population provides cultural experiences such as the Floating Lantern Matsuri, where people send messages to loved ones on the open ocean, the Malaysian influence of Makun Dulu, where people come together to share a meal of tasty Broome delicacies and Jetty to Jetty, where people experience tales told by the traditional landowners of Broome, the Yawuru people.

Foodies will not be disappointed with events such as the Sunset Long Table Dinner, with celebrity chefs Brendan Pang and Diana Chan set to serve up locally inspired menus utilising fabulous produce sourced in the region.

There is also plenty to see for art-lovers with the Shinju Matsuri Art Awards at the Broome Civic Centre growing in size each year and the A View to Asia sculpture exhibition on Cable Beach continuing to capture imaginations.

All of your favourite family-friendly events are making a return in 2019 and we can’t wait to see Broome’s creativeness on display at the LiveLighter Float Parade through the streets of Chinatown followed by the LiveLighter Mardi Gras on Male Oval. We’ll even be celebrating our four, and sometimes two-legged friends at the Rotary Club of Broome Pets in the Park.

and the Shinju Matsuri Inc. Board

We are also looking ahead to 2020, which marks a very special milestone for Shinju Matsuri. To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the festival a large-scale art installation will be created at the newly redeveloped Town Beach. International artist Lisa Foo will be in Broome this year, meeting with local artists to plan for the project. You can catch them all too at a series of workshops held at the Festival Info Booth (see page 9 for details).

Shinju Matsuri would not be possible without the commitment of the volunteer Board, community members who contribute to the events and our fantastic sponsors. We thank them all for their generous support.

FROM THE MINISTERThe McGowan Government is a proud sponsor of Shinju Matsuri through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program. The program supports medium to large regional events across the State to boost tourism, increase community vibrancy and participation, and develop regional areas. The Regional Events Program plays an important role in positioning Western Australia as an exciting destination to visit and a great place to live by showcasing and promoting a region’s unique and diverse attractions. Tourism is a key part of the Government’s plan to diversify the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities, especially in regional Western Australia. Events play an important role in this plan with the Government sponsoring a range of sporting, cultural, arts and culinary events across the State, through Tourism WA, to attract more visitors, encourage them to stay longer, disperse further and do more while they are here. We hope everyone enjoys the event and takes the time to explore the Kimberley region.

FROM THE PATRONMESSAGE

Shinju Matsuri Patron 2019 – Bill Reed

A pearling pioneer, explorer and marine biologist, Allure South Sea Pearls co-founder William (Bill) Reed AM has dived in pristine coastal waters around the world, travelling to some of the most exotic and remote locations in pursuit of the perfect pearls.

After studying zoology and fisheries biology at university, a young Bill sought a position that would allow him to pursue his passion for the sea. He would spend the next 20 years traversing the world and exploring the diverse seas of Papua New Guinea, Sudan, Nigeria and Tahiti.

In 1975 after selling his pearl farm and leaving the tropical shores of Tahiti, Bill returned to Australia and settled in beautiful Broome to work as a pearl consultant for one of the first cultured pearl farms in Australia at Kuri Bay, 370km North of Broome.

This new journey in Broome would see him build his reputation as one of the world’s most knowledgeable and successful pearl dealers, earning him the prestigious Order of Australia for his contributions to the pearling industry.

Having amassed a wealth of knowledge and experience, Bill acquired a pearl farm which was situated in the pristine and unpolluted waters off the Kimberley coast. The conditions were ideal for the precious Pinctata maxima oyster to blossom and produce an abundance of large, lustrous pearls.

According to Bill, the success of Australian South Sea pearls on the global market saw them recognised as ‘the finest and most prestigious pearls in the world’. As the desire and demand for these precious gems grew, it made it almost impossible to buy a local pearl in Broome.

In a twist of fate and a ‘very profitable accident’ as Bill recounts today, a broken leg saw Bill reshape the pearling industry in the historic town. Unable to work and travel to his pearl farm, a wheelchair bound Bill set-up shop in a rudimentary Colourbond shed, with ‘no real flooring, and a few cabinets directly positioned on the towns iconic red dirt.’ Bill had become an accidental shopkeeper and the first person, to officially sell pearls in Broome, in modern times. He offered genuine Australian South Sea pearls to locals and tourists, and nothing short of a surprise, the new business venture was an immediate success. Clients began to ask for pearl jewellery and this luxury was not yet on offer in Broome.

By the late 1980s, the pearl store had flourished and Bill invited young Perth jeweller Lindsay Youd to join him in Broome. With increasing demand for unique hand-crafted pearl and diamond jewellery, Bill and Lindsay collaborated with some talented goldsmiths, eventually leading to the creation of Allure South Sea Pearls, which offers a stunning range of pearl and diamond jewellery across Australia and internationally.

Far from his humble beginnings, Bill and Lindsay now have a beautiful light-filled boutique in the heart of Chinatownand after 25 years, the exquisite couture collection is still handcrafted locally by master jeweller John Eberhart.

Allure’s designs continue to celebrate and pay homage to their hometown of Broome, their link to nature and the beautiful environment that surrounds them. Every Allure jewellery piece brings out the singular beauty of each pearl, celebrating nature’s most magnificent treasures which is where Bill’s fascination began.

ART COMES HOME FOR 2020 GOLDEN JUBILEE Broome’s population is a melting pot of people from all corners of the globe, who make this unique location their home and a hotbed of creativity, with artists inspired by the region’s natural beauty.

To celebrate Shinju Matsuri’s Golden Jubilee in 2020, local artists Jacky Cheng, Jody Loaring, Michael Torres and Tomoko Yamada will join forces with international artist, Lisa Foo, to create a large-scale installation at the newly redeveloped Town Beach that explores the theme of ‘Home’. Just what that installation piece will resemble is still to be determined and is something the group will be giving much thought to during this year’s festival. The group will be inviting the community to participate in artistic workshops and help them brainstorm concepts for 2020. Living in Malaysia, Lisa creates bold and interactive, site-specific works ranging from sites like rivers, a botanical garden to an urban paddy fields that are inclined to the characteristics of performance art. Her installations often have a focus on collaboration and building community, so she is excited to meet Broome locals and visitors at Shinju Matsuri. “I have heard a lot of great things about this festival even though I have not been to one. It will be really immersive for me to be part of this historical moment with the involvement of creating the installation art for the Golden Jubilee celebration of this festival in 2020’, ‘together with local artists and Broome community,” Lisa says.

“Like all things, we are all connected in some way or to some degree. It will be a wonderful synergy to work with like-minded fellow artists with the support from Broome community.”

Jacky Cheng is an educator and artist who works across several mediums, but most notably her stunning paper cut, bas relief sculptures. Born in Malaysia but making Broome her home for more than a decade, Jacky’s art has been a feature in several years of the annual Shinju Matsuri Art Awards, taking out wins in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013,

2015 and 2018. Jacky is looking forward to working with the group of artists to create a unique work of art that will mark an important moment in Broome history.

“Town Beach carries a significant history to the arrival of migrants into Broome and it was also where the original Obon ceremony was held,” Jacky says.

“I can feel the goosebumps now for what may be presented for the 2020 festival. I hope the community will be proud of our efforts as this is a very important celebration for the elders, present and future.

Jody Loaring is an arts educator and practicing visual artist from Regional WA, who now lives and works in beautiful Broome. Jody works with a range of mediums to create sculptural, fibre and 2D works and has exhibited at the Shinju Matsuri’s Art Awards and A View to Asia, taking out wins in 2014, 2016 and 2018. “I am looking forward to working with Lisa Foo, an international installation artist who creates evocative works that incorporate elements of dance and performance within the installed works,” says Jody.

“We all bring something different to the collaboration and I’m looking forward to contributing to an artwork that will be bigger than each of us individually, that the community can enjoy.”

Michael Jalaru Torres is a Djugun/Yawuru man from Broome who has a background in media and television as well as photography and design. In recent years he has started working on public art and installations from the conceptual design side. Michael has exhibited around the world and his artwork is currently on display at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

“Knowing the history of Broome and the Shinju Matsuri Festival from growing up in Broome I am interested in working with the Broome community to create a vibrant and engaging work. Working with an international artists will strengthen the project and is a great knowledge and skill sharing platform for both parties,” says Michael.

Japanese-born fibre installation artist, Tomoko Yamada, has been an artist in residence and exhibited her work in several countries before settling in Broome, where she hones her art by experimenting with many types of materials and adding to her installations that are a constant work in progress.

“It is a great honour to be working on this project for the Shinju Matsuri Golden Jubilee at the newly developed Town Beach,” Tomoko says.

Shinju Matsuri originated in 1970 from a combination of three Asian cultural festivals in August - Japanese Bon Matsuri, Malaysian Hari Mardeka and Chinese Hang Seng. The combination of these celebrations became a special event for the local community and tourists, and played an important role in the history of Broome. Being Japanese, I am interested in the development of new projects taking the community forward, whilst acknowledging our past.

A Japanese floating lantern ceremony called Toro-Nagashi was traditionally held at Town Beach in the mid1960s and Tomoko is looking forward to bringing events back to this special place.

The entire project will be coordinated by Vanessa Margetts from MudMap Studio, who has a passion for community-driven artwork and has successfully delivered over 30 temporary and permanent public artworks to Broome.

With a broad range of skills, techniques and mediums, the five artists will band together as a formidable team to deliver something very special for Shinju Matsuri 2020. “It is [an] interesting experience for me to work with the five artists together for this project - all of us different nationality, culture of background, philosophy and different field of art,” Tomoko says. “As a member of Broome community, I feel privileged to share my artistic endeavours with a wider audience and to work alongside the other incredible artists,” Jacky adds. “I have such great respect for [the other] four participating artists as they are well known in their field of work.”

Shinju Matsuri 2020 will be held from 28 August – 6 September and is set to be the biggest and best in the festival’s history, so start planning now!

SHINJU MATSURI’S DRAGON HEART Sammy the Dragon is the beloved mascot of Shinju Matsuri, who is awakened each year at the festival’s Opening Ceremony and after several appearances over nine days, is finally put back to sleep at the Festival Finale.

Dragons in ancient Chinese tradition symbolised luck, prosperity, abundance, success and high achievement and the dragon dance incorporated into large-scale celebrations and festivals is a tradition that dates back well over a thousand years.

They are also strongly associated with water and pearls in mythology, with dragons often depicted holding a pearl in their claws. Broome’s own Sammy the Dragon is no exception and follows a large ‘Pearl of Wisdom’ as he is lead through the crowds by a large team of dedicated volunteers. It takes over 15 people to manoeuvre the 30-metre icon as Sammy’s ‘legs’ and the skill with which they duck and weave to bring the creature to life is an amazing spectacle.

Sammy is often accompanied by a music cart of drums, cymbals, whistles and crackers plus an entourage of smaller Chinese lions, meaning up to 60 people can be involved in his outings. The very important role of coordinating Sammy the Dragon during Shinju Matsuri has been held for 12 years by Lisa Sweet, the ‘Dragon Lady’.

“I make sure he has enough legs to dance through Broome town and spread his good luck, I help the drum cart and music team to make as much noise as possible to scare away any bad spirits and make way for Sammy’s good fortune,” Lisa says. “I feel very privileged to be part of something so special to so many in our town.”

Dragon Facts: • In ancient China, Emperors were called ‘sons of

dragons’ and their tombs were adorned with images of dragons.

• Chinese dragons are associated with water and always live at the bottom of seas, rivers or lakes.

• In mythology, Dragons are said to have exactly 117 scales, of which 81 are positive or yang and 36 are negative or yin.

• The number nine is associated with dragons in Chinese numerology and there are a number of places in China named Nine Dragons.

• If Sammy The Dragon touches you, you’ll have extra good luck for the year to come!

11

Sammy the Dragon has been an integral part of Shinju Matsuri since its inception almost 50 years ago. He has had a few iterations over the years, but the current Sammy was donated to the festival by the late owner of the Roebuck Bay Hotel, Brian Coppin.

In the past Sammy the Dragon’s legs were provided by the town’s winning football team for the season. To entice players to join the annual Float Parade, Sammy would stop at the Roebuck Bay Hotel to enjoy a few beers and this tradition of passing by the Roey continues to this day.

People of all ages love Sammy, with some locals starting as lions or drummers as young children, then progressing to be legs and eventually even aspiring to be Sammy’s head. Possibly the most important role in waking and putting Sammy back to sleep each year is played by the oldest living man of Chinese descent born in Chinatown, a title currently held by Doug Fong, who ceremoniously removes Sammy’s blindfold at the Opening Ceremony and puts it back on again at the Festival Finale.

According to Lisa, Sammy has a personality of his own and is curious, cheeky and quite spiritual, with many people feeling a sense of happiness and peace just be being around him.

“When we open the doors to his den to begin training each year it is like greeting an old friend, but he also commands respect, reverence and admiration,” she said.

In the months between festivals Sammy sleeps peacefully on display at the Broome Civic Centre. His skin is made of Chinese silk and his body is bamboo, so he gets some

regular maintenance from Broome puppeteer Gwen Knox while he’s resting and has a major repair every four years or so.

Catch some of Sammy the Dragon’s good luck at the Opening Ceremony, LiveLighter Float Parade, LiveLighter Mardi Gras, LiveLighter Festival Finale and other events throughout the festival.

“I try to plan Sammy’s activities during Shinju but Sammy has a mind of his own and when he wakes up I never quite know what he will get up to – he is quite impulsive and if he wants to do something there is no stopping him,” says Lisa.

Get involved: If you would like to help Sammy the Dragon bring luck and good fortune to Broome during Shinju Matsuri get in touch via his Facebook page – Sammy the Dragon and Friends!

Sammy is an ancient but active dragon so strong teens and adults are required to be his legs, however there are roles for all ages, fitness levels and abilities.

Gates open at 3.30pm – winner announced at 5pm – event close 7.30pm

This year’s theme will ask chefs to deliver a dish which captures the essence of Old Broome, the days when the pearling industry was thriving and the influence of Japanese, Malaysian and many other Asian cultures was shaping not only the town itself, but its unique culinary culture as well.

FLOATING LANTERN MATSURI Send your message out to the universe in one of the most symbolic ways possible at The Floating Lantern Matsuri. Whatever your message is, watch it float in glowing unison with all the other messages into the sunset.

The Floating Lantern Matsuri embraces everything about life, love, peace and friendship, providing you with a chance to get your thoughts down in writing and gently send them off onto destinations unknown. Whether your message is personal in memory of a lost loved one, a wish, a prayer or general words of encouragement and happiness for the world – put it on a lantern and watch it’s peaceful, glowing journey on the evening tide.

ENCHANTING EXPERIENCE AT GANTHEUME POINT

Enironmental ConsiderationsWe love how beautiful and clean Broome’s coast is and we want to keep it that way!Once the lanterns have floated into the sunset and you return to enjoy your picnics or VIP entertainment, the Shinju team are hard at work making sure no lanterns are left astray to float out and pollute the ocean. Boats, barriers and Shinju swimmers ensure each lantern is collected. Help us keep the beach beautiful and remember to pick up your picnic leftovers and wrapping.

Please consider the environment when decorating your lanterns at home. While we do recover the lanterns, we advise against using glitter or non-water-soluble paints that may make their way into the ocean.

VIP TICKETSVIP Tickets will include your lantern kit, free flowing drinks and canapes aswell as comfortable seating as you relax, listen to music and watch the sunset before and after sending your floating lantern message out to sea.
