INSPIRING MUSIC IN THE LAKES

WelcomeThis year’s Festival is packed head to toe with an eye-opening number of events to satisfy the demands of every lover of music. Tango returns in grand style with the London Tango Quintet (7 June), followed by the experience of an intimate solo guitar recital at the cavernous ‘Coro’ with celebrity guitarist Craig Ogden (8 June).

There is a plethora of piano repertoire this year and one certain to catch the eye is teenage sensation Lauren Zhang (8 June), who wowed the piano world and beyond with her dazzling, winning performance at the 2018 BBC Young Musician of the Year. Royal Northern Sinfonia and Beethoven fans will be pleased to see the featured concerto is his third piano concerto, as well as two of the ‘war-horse’ sonatas in Ronan O’Hora’s lunchtime recital at Ulverston Parish Church (12 June).

Cutting-edge cross-genre concerts are our mantra and Romanian pianist Bogdan Suciu fits the bill with his ‘urban’ piano project in a free ‘Rush-Hour’ concert (11 June) replete with street acrobatics and Parkour, whilst a unique performance marries actors and musicians in Romeo & Juliet (13 June).

Having some of the country’s leading chamber players in the town enables us to programme a cluster of chamber music concerts including Ebony & Embouchure (10 June), a spiritual experience at Swarthmoor Hall in Solo Bach Plus (10 & 11 June), and British cellist Jamie Walton's dulcet tones at Ulverston Parish Church (11 June). More hidden gems of the repertoire by Gustav Mahler, Frank Bridge and John Ireland will reveal their beauty when we all convene for Anthony Hewitt & Friends (12 June).

A special ‘Stage & Screen’ day (13 June) is a chance to revisit the Oscar-winning The Pianist at the Roxy, and the brilliant Neil Brand will feel at home in Ulverston with his ingenious compositions and improvisations to silent film, including Laurel and Hardy.

The highly inventive Misha Mullov-Abbado Group entertain in Jazz Night (14 June) and a rousing Choral Concert (15 June) brings us to a celebratory close, but not before local favourites Martin Roscoe & Jess Dandy have had a unique input. Jess is quickly gathering a reputation as a singer of rare gifts, and is in increasing demand internationally. She brings a brilliant invention as an ‘encore’ to the Festival: ‘SongPath’ (16 June) which encourages wellness in body and mind through walking, nature, and the link between music and its surroundings. The perfect and informal way to wind-down after nine days of intense music-making!

Five acclaimed musicians drawn together by a love of the tango. Chart-topping guitar virtuoso, Craig Ogden, is joined by the extraordinary accordionist, Miloš Milivojević, described by The Times as "a hurricane of musical invention". Pianist/composer David Gordon regularly tours as a jazz musician, harpsichordist and director of internationally renowned ensembles whilst double bassist, Richard Pryce, works with all the major orchestras and artists from Jamie Cullum to Shirley Bassey.

Violinist and founder of the quintet, David Juritz, made headlines when he busked around the world for charity. His playing has been described by The Strad magazine as having a quality of "aching lyricism … naked expression in the grip of an icy control".

BBC YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 2018 LAUREN ZHANG

BBC Young Musician of the Year, Lauren Zhang, has been praised far and wide for her incredible technical mastery and artistic maturity. At the tender age of sixteen she is tackling some of the most fiendish pieces - her choice of works tonight is testament to this, being perhaps unequalled in its technical challenge elsewhere in the vast piano repertory.

If her winning performance of Prokofiev’s second piano concerto at the 2018 BBC Young Musician of the Year finals is anything to go by, her flawless performance will be matched by a musical sensitivity, intelligence, depth and integrity. Each of the works on tonight’s programme is arguably amongst the greatest written by each composer for the instrument.

CLASSICAL CONNECTIONS - ROYAL NORTHERN SINFONIA

We are delighted to continue our collaboration with The Royal Northern Sinfonia, who this season celebrate their sixtieth birthday, in a programme with strong connections between each composer.

Beethoven regarded Mozart’s music with awe, and although they met only once, Mozart had predicted a great future for Beethoven. The influence of Mozart’s Concerto in C minor k. 491 on Beethoven’s third concerto in the same key is particularly strong. However it is the uniquely expansive beauty of the slow movement of the Beethoven that was to have a lasting influence on the style of piano concerto slow movements to come - including Brahms.

The theme of Brahms’ haydn variations (also known as the Chorale St. Antoni) has been wrongly attributed to Haydn - a common mistake in publishing at this time. Haydn - the musical father of all three composers - wrote his Symphony ‘le Matin’ under the patronage of the Esterhazys, part of a triptych of symphonies written to depict different times of the day.

A chance to hear some lesser-known works for an unusual combination of instruments. Written in his teens but undiscovered until after his death, Beethoven’s Trio contains the spirited bonhomie of his early Mozart-influenced style.

Jean-Michel Damase was a hugely successful and prolific 20th century French composer, and this delightful Trio deserves to be heard more often. Compatriot Poulenc’s Trio is on the other hand performed more regularly and is one of his first major works of chamber music. It is full of the wit and verve that marks many of Poulenc’s compositions.

Don’t miss this hilarious and informative concert that mixes fun with serious music education, teaching you everything you ever wanted to know about the tuba! From flag-waving processions, we step back in time to two of the early invaders: the Vikings with their animal horn, and the Romans with their cornu.

The Tudor period features the sackbut and cornett, followed by the first appearance of the tuba itself - the snake-like serpent originally used in the church. The Industrial Revolution brought the valve, and moving into the Victorian age, we hear a tune from the parlour, replete with period costumes. The show ends with a tribute to 'The last night of the proms' in a special suite with an exploding tuba! Packed with audience participation.

We are delighted to welcome highly gifted young British violinist Benjamin Baker for his first appearance in the Festival. Benjamin won 1st Prize at the 2016 Young Concert Artists auditions in New York, as well as at the ‘sister’ competition (YCAT) in London in 2013.

Benjamin has constructed a fascinating and hugely demanding unaccompanied programme - for which he is establishing a reputation - pairing three Baroque works by Bach, interwoven with two solo violin works by giants of the modern era - Ysaÿe & Kurtag. Please note there is an 'encore' performance on Tuesday 11 June.

Pre-concert refreshments served from 6.45pm.

Both concerts are likely to sell out fast. Book early to avoid disappointment.

LUNCHTIME SERIESBRIDGE TO BEETHOVEN

Noted for his rich, powerful sound with purity of tone, musical versatility and emotionally engaging performances, Jamie is one of the most distinctive cellists of his generation.

Beethoven’s A major Sonata is one of the most lyrical and glowing of the repertoire and Schumann's drei Fantasiestücke demonstrate the mercurial and poetic qualities of Schumann.

Frank Bridge is one of Britain’s most cherished composers and was a teacher of Benjamin Britten. His Sonata, though written at the beginning of the 20th century, is gushingly romantic, melodious and virtuosic for both instruments.

Including works by Debussy and Chopin, the Movement & Music project aims to explore the connection between sound and human movement from a cultural perspective. Blending Tai Chi techniques with Chinese-inspired melodies, parkour and free-running with 'Debussyan harmonies' and jazzy hip-hop vibes with old-school breakdancing, the visual and auditory combinations will bring to life a multidimensional form of artistic syncretism.

On a more personal level, this initiative aims to inspire people to consider and explore their physicality in a different way, becoming aware of how much movement influences the quality of our life. Inspired by this? Then try SongPath - see pages 14 & 17.

CHAMBER MUSIC NIGHTANTHONY HEWITT & FRIENDS

Our annual string and piano chamber music concert is an opportunity to delve deeper into a rich repertoire and present great works not yet heard at the Festival. Mozart’s piano Quartet in e flat has an abundance of piano solos and virtuosic passage-work that make it more akin to a piano concerto - and particularly popular with pianists!

Mahler’s piano Quartet was written while he was still a student at the Vienna Conservatory, however in its passionate romanticism evoking contemporary Viennese life, it is so much more than a mere exercise. Only the first movement survived and sketches of a scherzo, which Alfred Schnittke ‘completed’ as recently as 1988.

John Ireland and Frank Bridge were peers at the Royal College of Music under Charles Stanford and Ireland’s phantasie won the Cobbett Prize ahead of Bridge’s own phantasie Trio. Bridge is spoken of today as the teacher of Benjamin Britten and many of his fine works are still neglected today. The piano Quintet shows him at his best as a craftsman and is a true masterwork of compositional technique.

To end the Festival we showcase a potpourri of very different styles of instrumental and choral music. The double bass is not an instrument normally associated for a solo role, however we include four works tonight for the instrument. Philip Glass is arguably the most successful ever minimalist composer and highly regarded Estonian Arvo Pärt's Für Alina inherits the same simplicity and sparseness. Stromness in the Orkneys was home to Peter Maxwell Davies and lies just across the water from John O’Groats; the link is more than simply geographical in that both emanate from folk style. Jess Dandy takes us back three centuries to songs by Bach and 19th century Italian composer Bottesini’s elegy and Tarantella close the first half with something more virtuosic. o radiant dawn is a motet written in 2008 for a church choir in Glasgow. The striking opening chord sequence is a deliberate echo of Thomas Tallis's o nata lux, also on the subject of light. We move forward three and a half centuries to Hubert Parry’s stirring setting of i was glad, with words from psalm 122, which was composed for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. Arvo Pärt is particularly known for his thoughtful, intense choral writing. Many of his works, like The Beatitudes, are in English. The role of the organ in this piece is limited, but very telling.

The programme finishes with a complete switch – into the world of jazz. Despite the gap in time and style between the Renaissance and jazz eras, surely Tallis, with his love of syncopated cross-rhythms and 'blues' thirds, had some jazz in his soul! Songs and Sonnets is a setting of seven Shakespeare texts by the late, great pianist George Shearing.

The Woodland Trust’s Swarthmoor Hall Wood comes next, an unsuspecting little haven of ancient woodland on the banks of the Levy Beck, where we’ll sit awhile before continuing to Swarthmoor Hall itself, the historic founding home of the Quaker movement and home to a wild-flower meadow and wheelchair-accessible quiet garden for meditation. All the while, we’ll be exploring the musical & natural treasures to be found in the landscape around us, celebrating what it means to be rooted and what it means to be well.

Fellow travellers include local musicians, Jess Dandy (“rising star" contralto) & Martin Roscoe (classical award-winning pianist), as well as Rufus Harrington, the University of Cumbria’s senior lecturer in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Together with you, they will be making music, talking and meditating on the restorative and grounding qualities of our own SongPaths.

Walkers intending to take part in the whole event are invited to pre-register as numbers are limited. Those registered will be given priority seating at venues. Registration will be possible from 1st May. Please see website for details of this and other SongPath news.

This event is free to all, with donations welcome and encouraged to Mind In Furness & Ulverston Mind. Come along for ten minutes or the whole day – entirely up to you. If you have mobility/accessibility requirements, please contact SongPath in advance.
