Dear Friends,

What a wonderful and productive year for the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta (JFGA)!

In our second century as a recognized leader in the Atlanta Jewish community, we came to fully understand the scope and scale of our reach—both locally and internationally.

In June of 2006, we received the comprehensive report of the JFGA community-wide demographic study, our first in 10 years. We confirmed that our Jewish community is undergoing significant growth and transformation, with over 120,000 Jews and 25 percent of our population under the age of 18. We face an increasing degree of anonymity due to our community’s infancy and enormous geographic dispersion. Armed with a statistical account of our community’s ever-changing needs, we moved quickly to develop strategies to meet them.

Then, last summer, the war with Hezbollah began, and northern Israel absorbed thousands of rockets on a daily basis. In three weeks, JFGA raised over $7 million—including over $4 million in one memorable evening—to aid the people of Israel in harm’s way.

Through generous donor contributions to the annual campaign, funds raised through JFGA-managed foundations, government grants, and special gifts, the total financial impact of JFGA’s 2006 fundraising activities exceeded $46 million!

As we enter the next century, JFGA will redefine its commitment to Atlanta’s Jewish community through the steadfast pursuit of five outcomes––community goals that will have measurable, meaningful impact on the lives of thousands in our Jewish community:

Identity: Family education, teen enrichment, and professional development to help Atlanta’s Jewish youth become confident in their identity.

Engagement: Outreach programs and services that will guide Atlanta Jews to become engaged in the Jewish Community.

Caregivers: Transportation and respite care for Jews caring for elderly family members, or those with mental, physical, or emotional needs.

Israel: Self-sufficiency through education and employment for Ethiopian-Israeli children, youths, and their parents.

Former Soviet Union: Community building for Jewish youth, teenagers, and elderly in the Former Soviet Union city of Minsk, Belarus.

In 101 years, JFGA has raised and allocated over half a billion dollars in our efforts to build and expand the Atlanta Jewish community, support Israel, and sustain Jewish life throughout the world.

In keeping with this tradition, we pledge on behalf of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta to work closely with you to help achieve the extraordinary potential that is Jewish Atlanta.

Strengthen… … The Atlanta Jewish infrastructureThrough our outcome funding and affiliates, JFGA works every day to strengthen Jewish communities in Atlanta, Israel, and the Former Soviet Union.

Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta Annual Report 2007

As the population of Jewish Atlanta grows beyond 120,000, JFGA is strengthening the in-frastructure to maintain and improve the foundation that supports our diverse community.

Working with its now 20 Affiliate Agencies, who provide the base for the community, JFGA endeavors to cultivate a prevailing sense of belonging, unity, and support for our friends and relatives. In addition, we are broadening our reach beyond just these affiliates, partnering with a broad array of organizations to strengthen the community through outcome initiatives.

… Jewish youth identity Joe and his wife, Lindsey, who is pregnant with their first child, just moved into a new house in Duluth. They looked for a house at a price they could afford, but never considered the “Jewishness” of the area. Isolated in their new environment, Joe and Lindsey began to wonder––who would perform their child’s bris? What preschool should they send their child to? How could they meet Jewish neighbors? Who could they ask for help?

Strengthen…

Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta Annual Report 2007

We are nurturing and embracing Jewish identity among our youth here in Atlanta and in the Former Soviet Union.

In Atlanta, we are expanding the menu of ways teens can get involved, creating inno-vative opportunities to engage them given their range of interests. From Jewish clubs in public and non-Jewish private high schools to volunteering to heavily subsidized trips to Israel with their peers, Atlanta’s Jewish teens now have a variety of opportunities to connect with their own.

By offering new parents access to organized playgroups and programs like Shalom Baby, JFGA brings young Jewish parents and their children together with other new families––connecting them through a strong support network of resources and services, and helping them raise their children Jewishly.

In Minsk, the budding Jewish community continues to emerge from historical repression of Jewish tradition and expression. By nourishing the next generation of leaders and providing a wealth of educational opportunities such as camps, Jewish day schools, and Sunday school programs, we are helping to strengthen a developing Jewish identity.

Strengthen… … The Former Soviet UnionZoya is 65 years old and lives in Minsk, Belarus, where she moved shortly after the war. Her diabetes has damaged her legs and eyes, leaving her homebound. In addition to her medical condition, Zoya struggles daily with isolation and loneliness. She now survives on a $120 governmental monthly pension.

Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta Annual Report 2007

There are currently 2,088 non-Nazi victims living in Minsk, Belarus. We work to en-sure that they receive the same level of services as Nazi victims, including homecare workers, sufficient food packages, medical services, and more.

… The State of Israel Negist is a widow and the single parent of two young daughters living in Yokneam, Israel. She immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia in 1999 with the hope of creating a new future. Negist is motivated to be on the path to independence and success for herself and for her children, but she is currently unemployed.

Strengthen…

Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta Annual Report 2007

Over the past year, JFGA strove to strengthen our Israeli brothers and sisters through times of crisis and to improve their chances of future prosperity.

In Yokneam, we worked with our local partners to improve the lives of Ethiopian-Israelis, ensuring that they do not become a permanent underclass. We continue to develop the adults’ professional skills, while strengthening the children’s social and academic performance so they might thrive in their new homeland.

Much like we did a year earlier for those living in the Gulf states whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the Atlanta Jewish community reached out to Israelis impacted by last summer’s war with Lebanon. In a wonderful showing of support and solidarity, JFGA raised millions of dollars to help those affected re-build their lives. As we have in all previous conflicts, JFGA stood ready to help.

… Caregivers to support servicesRachel’s youngest son, Eric, was recently diagnosed with autism. Life in their household has always been busy, but daily life for Rachel is becoming increasingly stressful with Eric’s growing needs and the needs of her aging parents—her mother has Alzheimer’s and her father’s vision has gotten worse. Stuck in the middle of supporting two generations with special needs, Rachel is beginning to realize that she can’t do it all.

Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta Annual Report 2007

It’s estimated that approximately one out of every four Jewish Atlantans is a caregiver, providing support for an older adult or someone with a disability or a mental illness. Our focus is on connecting these caregivers, who are often overwhelmed with the strains of caring for a loved one, with respite care and transportation––two of their most crucial needs. With their own needs addressed, caregivers will again be able to focus on their loved ones, and give them the care and support they deserve.

The Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) program now consists of five program sites across Georgia, with the newest site recently established in Savannah. The NORC program allows seniors to remain in their homes longer while providing them with the transportation, social, and medical assistance they need.

… Newcomers and interfaith familiesJosh and his non-Jewish wife, Katie, recently had their first son, Andrew. The couple, having already agreed to raise their children Jewish, decided to have a bris for their son in their home and chose a mohel known for being “interfaith friendly.” During the ceremony, the rabbi abruptly informed Katie that she could not sign the certificate, as she was not Jewish. Katie was heart-broken and embarrassed in front of her family and friends.

Atlanta’s Jewish community has enjoyed astounding growth, with over 30 percent of current Jewish households moving to the area within the last 10 years. The past de-cade has also ushered in an increasing population of interfaith couples.

JFGA recognizes the need for all newcomers and interfaith couples to feel wel-comed and connected to a thriving Jewish community that yearns to remain vibrant and diverse for years to come.

JFGA offers Pathways, a centralized place for resources, services, and program-ming for intermarried couples, families, extended families, and adult children of interfaith marriages. The trained Pathways staff will provide outreach to the broad-er unaffiliated community, focusing on support and programming that address the concerns and needs of interfaith couples at various stages of family life.

We continue to work with our partners to bring services to North Metro Atlanta, one of the fastest growing areas of the city. Over the next year, in addition to promoting on-going programming, we will enhance information, referral, and counseling services, while supporting the JFGA North Metro Campus––where JFGA, MJCCA, JF&CS, and “My Own Back Yard” are located.

… Through total resource developmentThe generous support of its contributors enables JFGA to Repair the World. This year, through all of its fundraising arms, JFGA raised over $46.3 million.

… Through the Annual CampaignJFGA’s Annual Campaign brought in over $25 million in 2006––$7 million through the Israel Emergency Campaign and $18.2 million through the Campaign for Community Needs. For the second consecutive year, the campaign found success in a shortened, more focused time frame, taking place primarily in September and October.

Approximately 600 volunteers solicited donations, both in person and on the phone. The phoning sessions proved once again to be very productive, with many volunteers participating and significant dollars raised.

The many events and programs organized by the campaign divisions––including Major Donors, Women’s Philanthropy, Business and Professions, Young Leadership, and North Metro––drew over 5,000 attendees from the community during the year.

… Through Planned Giving and EndowmentThe Planned Giving and Endowment Department had a record year, opening 51 new funds at JFGA––including funds for other communities and local Jewish organizations. Total Endowment holdings now stand at $135 million, an increase of $22 million from last year.

The Inaugural Balser Symposium, a partnership with the Community Foundation of Atlanta, was held to educate over 100 estate-planning professionals.

The Young Adult Donor Advised Fund program was established in an effort to introduce the next generation to JFGA’s tradition of giving.

… Through Foundations JFGA sought contributions from a wide range of private foundations, both Jewish and non-Jewish, and from others based outside Atlanta.

Through May 2007, JFGA received $333,000 in private grants. These grants helped support JFGA’s NORC Initiative, the birthright Israel program, and the Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy.

… Through GovernmentJFGA remains active in creating relationships with government officials and educating them at the state and federal levels. In 2007, JFGA hosted its third Legislative Reception, and continued to work with legislative consultants to advance JFGA’s and its affiliates’ priorities.

In 2008, JFGA will receive $575,000 from the state of Georgia in support of its NORC program. The Georgia legislature sees the program as a potential model for providing senior services statewide.

JFGA successfully lobbied for an increase in resources for older adults and people with disabilities. The Jewish Home will receive $237,000 in increased Nursing Home provider reimbursement.
