  • Foreword

As Gleb Derujinsky himself stands for thefinest of aristocratic Russia, so his workstands for what is finest in the aristocracyof art. His sculpture has always shownhigh distinction, a devotion to beautyunmarred by any fad. The last two yearshave brought a deepening of spiritualvision and a stronger feeling for essentialform.

His scope is wide, he has felt the valueof wood as a medium to a greater degreethan most of his contemporaries, andsome of his more important pieces, nota-ably the well known Leda and his recentMadonna-a singularly moving concep-tion-are carved from lignum vitsa. Hisportrait busts, such as that of Roerich, the radiant one of the little son of Mr.and Mrs. Carll Tucker, and those of Mrs.John Henry Hammond and Lillian Gish, show the breadth of his sympathy. Thegardens of Mrs. Henry White, Mrs. J. H.Hammond are graced by his figures andsundials. Some will be charmed by thedash and harmony of his little archaic stagsbut it is his important pieces, such as hisDiana, which have placed him in the fore-front of the host of young sculptors doingadmirable work today. Among them all,he is perhaps the truest idealist.
