15th Sunday in Ordinary TimeUnder the huge oak tree in the yard, my 5-year-old niece was shocked to discover that the huge tree had begun as a small acorn, just like one of many she found on the ground. She could not believe that something so large began as something so small.

Crowds of people wanted to hear what Jesus had to say. When He taught, Jesus used parables to explain spiritual realities that are difficult to grasp. But their everyday experiences provided vivid images to explain things they could not see. Seed needs good soil to grow; so does the Word of God need good soil—us—for it to grow.

People will often express a desire to have greater faith or trust in God. Somehow more is better and even necessary for it to ‘work.’ Looking for ways to find more faith, people will overlook the fact that what they have is enough. Prayer, practice and patience will allow the seeds of faith to grow, becoming stronger and deeper each day. Then, one day we can say with Paul, that I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to certain devotions.

July is devoted to the Precious Blood of Jesus. The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in 1849 by Pius IX, but the devotion is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood. In the past, the feast of the Most Precious Blood of Christ was celebrated on the first Sunday of July, in 1911, the feast was moved to July 1, where it remained until the reforms following Vatican II when the feast was suppressed. In its place, the church combined the feasts of Corpus Christi and the Most Precious Blood into the solemnity of the Most Holy Body of Blood and Christ. Blessed Pope John XXIII was devoted to the Precious Blood. He approved the present form of the Litany of the Precious Blood. "The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it."
