Fr. Tomasz’s Weekly Reflection Today's Liturgy of the Word introduces to us the biblical imagery related to salt and light and its purpose. Everyone, especially a Christian, should recognize that they have their own unique life, calling and task. Our life is a path full of people, desires, events, words and signs. Through our faith we recognize that we have received it from God as a task to walk the paths of salvation, that is, to do everything in cooperation with Christ Crucified and Risen. For all creation exists in him, because without him it would not exist. He enlightens and embraces every man who comes into this world. That is why Jesus speaks of himself as God: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

The Son of God, who reveals to us the mystery of the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit, is a Light not only in himself, but also a Light that serves; which is for all: first and foremost for every human being, for the life of the human family and for all creation. He comes to us in various ways. His light, which is a source of faith and love, shines in us, shines in every truth He reveals, in every aspect of life, in every splendor of the beauty, in the rhythm of life, in every person we love, on every step on the road, in every event.

Being the Word of the Father, the reflection of His existence, Jesus speaks to us most fully through the mystery of the Crucified Love, which does not enslave man, but with His power and wisdom brings the freedom of the children of God. It is thanks to Jesus Christ that we experience the presence of the Father in the light of the Holy Spirit and have participation with him. We have within us God the Creator and Savior, the Beginning and the End of all creation. This light of faith shines everywhere where someone shares their bread with the hungry, welcomes the poor to his home, or gives clothes to the needy.

The Gospel images of salt and light to which Jesus refers are a thoroughly human reality and seem understandable to every human being. But in reality this is not the case, because not everyone seems to see their sense. The truth that they do not exist by themselves or for themselves. They remain in the service of the greater cause. This is also the case with everyone who is a disciple of Jesus and through Him has access to the Father as the Creator and Savior. Therefore, we have a duty to recognize him in spirit and truth, but also in love: You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Without this complementary love: the love of God who is in heaven and the other man who walks our earthly paths – we are not fully human, we are salt without its taste, we are light that doesn’t shine. Choosing love is a testimony to the light, to the Father who is in heaven. And then: night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign forever and ever.
