“Diversities as grains of sands”

HAMKA University is known as a college of faculty of teacher training and education in

Indonesia which is consisted of many faculties that encompass a number of courses, such as

Economics, Mathematics, and also English Departments. HAMKA English course is one of the

popular programs to be applied by freshman academic year 2012, and for this purpose, the

institution is divided the students in Regular and Non-Regular system in order to facilitate wide

individuals of collegian. Regular students are well known as students that graduated from senior

high school; besides, Non-Regular students are familiar with scholars who want to complete their

university education while having a job. There are three main similarities and two differences

systematical for Regular and Non-Regular students at English Department of HAMKA

University academic year 2012.

Regular and Non-Regular students at English department of HAMKA University have a

handful similarities, such a Sistem Kredit Satuan (SKS), Facilities, and also Standard Required

Test. First of all, there are 154 of English SKS which have to be accomplished by both of

students, and it is divided into eight semesters. The amount of SKS for the first up to sixth

semester is over 20 SKS, despite the fact that the seventh and eight semesters are under 20 SKS.

The second similarity is facilities. In this sector, there is no alteration between Regular

and Non-Regular English students, and both of them have the comparable facilities, such as:

Library, Auditorium, Micro Teaching Laboratory, Language Laboratory, Free Hotspot Area,

Online Academic, and also Mosque. Last, both of Regular and Non-Regular English students

have the parallel system of standard required test for applying to HAMKA University, and it is

separated in two kinds, such as Test, and also Non-Test requirements. Test is the assessment that

is conducted by HAMKA University through potential academic test and English language test;

However, Non-Test is the procedure to be HAMKA collegian by some requirements, such as

having a letter of recommendation from some school, letter of applications from some

institutions, and special invitation from HAMKA University.

At the same time, there are some crucial contrasts between Regular and Non-Regular at

English department of HAMKA Universities, such as tuition fees, and also lecture time. The first

essential difference is in term of tuition fees. There are three categories of tuition for English

students, like Biaya Pengembangan Pendidikan (BPP), Biaya Operasional Peendidikan (BOP),

and also Sistem Kredit Satuan (SKS). In this case, BPP for Regular students it is around IDR

10.000.000 and can be paid for four times during the first up to fourth semester. In contrast to

regular students, the expense for Non-Regular students it is around IDR 9.000.000 and also can

be paid for four times during the first up to fourth semester. Next, in the form of BOP, Regular

students have to spend around IDR 2.700.000 that is paid per semester, besides the Non-Regular

students it is around IDR 2.250.00 for each semester. Furthermore, in the English SKS payment,

regular students should pay around IDR 100.000 in every SKS, despite of non-regular students

which have the expense around IDR 2.250.000.

According to their opposed daily day activities and their rushing situation; therefore,

Regular and Non-Regular English students have the contrast timing for lecturing. In this case,

Regular students begin the lecture on Monday up to Friday which starts from 08.00 am up to

01.00 pm; instead of Non-Regular students that begin the lecture on Friday up to Saturday which

starts from 08.00 am up to 07.00 pm.

In summary, there are many similarities and differences of being Regular and Non-

regular students in HAMKA University; especially, English Department students. In this case,

the quota of SKS for English Students, the campus facilities, and also the requirement test to get

to University are similar for both of students, in spite of the facts that the expenses and also the

study time are truly different. Actually, the essences of Regular and Non-Regular students are

alike; they both are “collegians” that have a passionate and curious spirit to build their future. So,

by this classification, collegians are able to select the proper system between Regular and Non-

Regular based on their individual condition.
