WHAT IS THE SOLAR SYSTEM?
The Solar System
is made up of
The Sun Planets
Gives light and heat to the Earth
Have their own celestial bodies (moons)
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
Planets and satellites
Planets Natural satellites
Inner or rocky planets:
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
They are celestial bodies.
They don’t have their own light.
They orbit most planets.
Outer or gaseous planets:
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
the Moon
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
Planets are celestial bodies that do not have their own light and which move around the Sun. The orbit the planets follow around the Sun is not circular, but elliptical. There are eight planets in the Solar System: INNER OR ROCKY PLANETS
They are nearer to the Sun. They have solid rock surfaces. They are: Mercury, Venus, the Earth and Mars.
Planets
OUTER OR GASEOUS PLANETS They are farther from the Sun. They are
much larger than the other planets. They are made up of gases.
They are: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Other celestial bodies
Asteroids Comets
They are small bodies of
ice and rock that orbit
the sun. When they are
near the Sun the ice
melts and they have a
long tail of light.
Meteorites
Asteroids that come
near the Earth. They
usually burn and
become shooting stars
when they travel
through the
atmosphere.
Rocks of different sizes
that orbit the Sun.
Rocks of different sizes that orbit the
Sun.

THE EARTH - CHARACTERISTICS
The average surface
temperature is 15ºC.
There is water in solid,liquid
and gas states.
The atmosphere has oxygen.
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
THE EARTH - MOVEMENTS
Rotation Revolution
The Earth takes 24 hours, or a day, to rotate on its
own axis.
The Earth’s rotation causes day and night.
The Earth takes 365 days, or a year, to orbit the Sun.
The Earth’s rotation causes the seasons.
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
THE EARTH – parts of the earth
Atmosphere Is the mixture of gases
that surrounds the Earth.
Hydrosphere Is all the water on the
Earth (solid and liquid states).
Geosphere Is the solid part of the
Earth .
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
Atmosphere - layers
Stratosphere The ozone layer is in the
lower part of the Stratosphere.
The ozone layer protects the Earth from the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.
Troposphere Is near the Earth’s
surface. We can find clouds, rain and snow in
it.
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
GEOSPHERE - layers
Mantle is the middle layer
Crust is the outside layer
Core is the inner layer
The mantle and the core are both extremely hot.
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
THE MOON
Characteristics Movements
Rotation: The Moon takes 28 days
to rotate on its own axis.
Revolution: The Moon also takes
28 days to orbit the Earth.
It is the Earth’s satellite.
It is much smaller than
the Earth.
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
REPRESENTATIONS OF THE EARTH
With the information that artificial satellites send us,
we can represent the Earth in two ways: a globe
or a map.
A globe is a round, three dimensional representation of the Earth.
A map represents the Earth on a flat
surface.
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
REPRESENTATIONS OF THE EARTH
The equator
We use imaginary lines to locate any point on Earth.
It is an imaginary line that goes around the Earth.
It divides the Earth into two
hemispheres: the Northern Hemisphere
and the Southern Hemisphere.
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
REPRESENTATIONS OF THE EARTH
Parallels
Parallels are imaginary horizontal lines that are parallel to the equator.
They are numbered in degrees from the
equator to the poles.
The equator is at zero degrees (0º) The North Pole is at 90 degrees North (90º N) The South Pole is at 90 degrees South (90º S)
UNIT 7 - THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COLEGIO TABLADILLA
REPRESENTATIONS OF THE EARTH
Meridians Meridians are imaginary vertical lines that go through the poles.
The Prime Meridian is a meridian at 0º. It goes through Greenwich in
England and divide the Earth into Eastern Hemisphere
and Western Hemisphere
Greenwich Meridian is at zero degrees (0º)
Greenwich Meridian

LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
We can use parallels and meridians to locate places on the Earth’s surface.
Latitude tell us how far north (N) or south (S) we are from the
equator.
Latitude goes from 0º to 90º
Longitude Tell us how far East (E) or west
(W) we are from the Prime Meridian.
Longitude goes from 0º to 180º
The equator is at latitude 0º The North Pole is at latitude 90º N The South Pole is at latitude 90º S
The Prime Meridian is at longitude 0º Seville is at longitude 5º W Rome is at longitude 12º E
