    CAUTION: Setup must begin with connecting the notebook to AC power. To ensure thatthe correct drivers load and to prevent file corruption or damage to the

    components during initial setup: I Do not remove the battery pack until thenotebook has been connected to external AC power. I Run the notebook on externalAC power, not on battery power, throughout initial setup. I Do not set up thenotebook while it is docked in an optional Port Replicator.

    1. Place the notebook on a flat surface near an electrical outlet, then connectthe notebook to external AC power.

    Plug the AC Adapter cable into the DC power connector 1. Plug the power cord intothe AC Adapter 2 and into an electrical outlet 3. (Power cords and outlets vary bycountry.)

    The power/standby light 2 turns on. The battery pack in the battery bay begins tocharge and the battery light 3 turns on. The battery light remains on while thebattery pack is charging and turns off when the battery pack is fully charged. Youare prompted to begin software setup.

    Setting Up the SoftwareThe initial setup prompt is displayed on the screen as soon as the notebook isconnected to external power. Before responding to the initial setup prompt andproceeding through the online instructions, read the following caution and setupinformation:

    CAUTION: To ensure that the correct drivers load and to prevent file corruption ordamage to the components during initial setup: Do not unplug the notebook from theelectrical outlet. I Do not shut down the notebook. I Do not remove or insert adrive.

    After you begin initial software setup, you must complete the entire process.Setup time varies depending on notebook configuration. If you are prompted toselect a language or operating system, choose carefully and keep in mind thefollowing facts:

    The languages and operating system that you do not choose will be deleted from thesystem and cannot be restored during initial setup. An operating system availableduring initial setup is enhanced by Compaq. When an operating system is deleted,the enhancements are also deleted.

    During the setup process, you must accept the End User License Agreement to

    continue.

    Installing Optional ApplicationsYou can install third-party applications or preloaded Compaq utilities at any timeafter initial setup is complete.I I

    To install a third-party application, refer to the documentation included with the

    application. To install a preloaded Compaq application, access the Setup CompaqSoftware utility:

    In Windows 2000 Professional, the Setup Compaq Software icon is on the desktop.Select Setup Compaq Software icon > Next. Select the check box for the applicationyou want to install. (Clear check boxes for preloaded software you do not want toinstall.) In Windows XP Professional, select Start > All Programs > Setup CompaqSoftware icon > Next. Select the check box for the application you want toinstall. (Clear check boxes for preloaded software you do not want to install.)

    Download the latest software and drivers for your notebook. Open an online serviceevent with a Compaq support specialist. Get information about your notebook,including reference guides, specifications, white papers, and customer advisories.

    Read suggestions for creating a safe and comfortable work environment. Ergonomicand safety information about the notebook is provided on this CD in the Safety &Comfort Guide.

    WARNING: This is a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules.For more Class B information, refer on this CD to Regulatory and Safety Notices.To reduce the risk of personal injury, electric shock, fire, or damage to theequipment: I Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. It is an importantsafety feature. I Plug the power cord into a grounded (earthed) electrical outletthat is easily accessible at all times. I Do not place anything on power cords orcables.     Confirming Hibernation Settingfactory Hibernation is an energy-saving feature enabled at the protectsthat can be initiated by you or by the system. This feature your notebook by saving allinformation in RAM (random access memory) to a hibernation file on the hard driveand shutting down the notebook. For more information about using Hibernation,refer to the Software Guide, Power chapter on the Documentation Library CD

    In Windows 2000 Professional, select Start > Settings > Control Panel > PowerOptions icon > Hibernate tab. Make sure that the Enable Hibernate Support checkbox is selected.     Updating Compaq SoftwareFor optimal notebook performance and to make sure your notebook remains compatiblewith changing technologies, Compaq recommends that you install the latest versionsof Compaq software as they become available. To update Compaq software: 1. Obtainthe Compaq Support Software CD. 2. Download software updates from the Compaq Website. Prepare for any software update by identifying your notebook type, series or

    Obtaining the Compaq Support Software CDThe Compaq Support Software CD provides the latest Compaq software andinstructions for installing and using it. The CD includes device drivers, ROMupdates, and utilities. To purchase the current Compaq Support Software CD or asubscription that provides both the current version and future versions of the CD,refer to the Worldwide Telephone Numbers booklet, included with the notebook, to

    contact a Compaq authorized dealer, reseller, or service provider.

    Preparing to Update SoftwareTo access software updates from the Compaq Web site, the following informationwill be needed:I I I

    The product category is Notebook. The product family name and series number areprinted in the lower left corner of the display bezel. More complete modelinformation is provided on the serial number label on the bottom of the notebook.

    To determine whether available ROM updates contain later ROM versions than thosecurrently installed on the notebook, you will need to know the version of the

    system ROM currently installed. ROM version information can be displayed bypressing Fn+esc or by accessing Compaq Computer Setup.

    Displaying ROM Information in Computer SetupComputer Setup is a non-Windows utility. For general information about usingComputer Setup, refer to the Setup and Diagnostics Utilities chapter in theSoftware Guide on the Documentation Library CD included with the notebook. Todisplay ROM information in Computer Setup: 1. To open Computer Setup, turn on orrestart the notebook. Press F10 while the F10 = ROM Based Setup message is

    displayed in the lower left of the screen.

    To change the language, press F2. For navigation instructions, press F1.

    2. Select the File menu > System Information. The system ROM information isdisplayed. 3. To exit Computer Setup without changing any settings, use the arrowkeys to select File > Ignore Changes and Exit, then follow the instructions on thescreen. After Computer Setup closes, the notebook restarts in Windows.

    Downloading Software from CompaqMost software at the Compaq Web site is packaged in a compressed file called aSoftPaq. Some ROM updates may be packaged in a compressed file called a RomPaq.

    Other ROM updates may be provided as a CPQFlash SoftPaq. Most download packagescontain a file named Readme.txt. A Readme.txt file contains information regardinginstalling and troubleshooting the file. The Readme.txt files included withROMPaqs are English only.

    Downloading System ROM

    CAUTION: To prevent an unsuccessful installation, download and install the systemROM only while the notebook is connected to reliable external power using the AC

    Adapter. Do not download or install a system ROM while the notebook is running onbattery power, docked in an optional Port Replicator, or connected to an optionalpower source. During the download and installation: I Do not unplug the notebookfrom the electrical outlet. I Do not shut down the notebook. I Do not remove orinsert a drive.

    To download and install a system ROM: 1. Access the page at the Compaq Web sitethat provides software for your notebook. For home and small office products orcorporate products, visit:http://www.compaq.com/support

    2. Follow the instructions on the screen to locate the system ROM you want todownload. 3. At the download area: a. Write down the information (date and name)

    of any update that is later than the system ROM currently installed on yournotebook. b. Select the software you want and follow the downloading instructionson the Web page. 4. When the download is complete, open Windows Explorer. 5. InWindows Explorer, select My Computer > the hard drive designation (usually, driveC) > Compaq.

    Restoring SoftwareThe QuickRestore kit included with the notebook provides all the software thatshipped preinstalled or preloaded on your notebook and instructions for restoringit. You can use QuickRestore to install or reinstall individual software items,such as applications, or to restore the entire notebook factory image. The factoryimage is the original software on your notebook when it was shipped. When you

    The notebook reverts to the original factory settings. Software you installedafter the initial software setup, including drivers, applications, or utilities,will be erased.

    For information about using a QuickRestore CD to start up the notebook, refer tothe documentation included with the QuickRestore kit.

    Installing a Retail Version of an Operating SystemA Windows operating system provided on the notebook or on a QuickRestore CD isenhanced by Compaq. The Compaq enhancements add power and security features andprovide supplementary support for external devices such as drives and PC Cards.

    CAUTION: Replacing an operating system enhanced by Compaq with a retail version ofan operating system will result in the loss of all Compaq enhancements. In somecases, the loss of these enhancements may result in an unresponsive system. Inother cases, complete USB support may become unavailable.
