President – David Pavia

The past year has been a trying time for many members of Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club. Without club rooms, members have endured a lack of hot showers, craft storage, hospitality areas, training rooms, uniform shop and administration areas. Despite all these challenges, OGSLSC has fulfilled its mission to keep the beach safe, enjoying no patrol defaults for the season while delivering over 5800 patrol hours through the season. Surf Sport has been very successful again with State Title wins for both Seniors and Nippers.

Our IRB team has enjoyed an excellent year in 2019, with a significant increase in the size of the team this year. The members of the IRB team are to be congratulated on their willingness to support summer sport by providing water safety at carnivals and assisting with the Rip View swim and being the principal group providing water safety at the Ocean Grove swim.

The continued success of all our competition teams is the direct result of the dedication of all our athletes, coaches, parents and other volunteers who have been there day in day out, all season to set up tents, supply water safety, work as officials and as team managers and any number of tasks that are required to allow our club to compete at such a high level.

The core business of Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club is to keep the beach safe and educate our members and the public on safe beach behaviour. Sport plays a vital role in training our patrolling members to a very high standard which helps ensure that we can keep the beach safe.

The new Patrol Tower was opened on the first patrol day of the season and has proved to be an excellent facility to observe the beach and store patrol equipment close to where it is used. Using the new Tower as a base, this year we amassed 5,806 volunteer patrol hours, performing numerous rescues and preventative actions to help keep people safe, with over 220,000 visitors to our beautiful stretch of beach. This represents an 800 hour increase in patrol hours to last season. The contribution patrolling members make in giving up their own time to provide this valuable service is highly regarded not only within the club, but the wider community in general. On behalf of the club, well done on a fantastic patrol season.

I would like to thank all our volunteer patrollers, without whom there wouldn’t be an Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club. I would also like to thank all those who give their time so generously towards the training and assessing of our Members.

As you are aware, the clubroom construction is fully funded, however we are still seeking support from members and the wider community for the furnishing and equipping of the new building. The board recently formed a Club Business Model Committee chaired by Scott McNaughton whose job it is to develop a sustainable business model for club operations going forward.

In the past year we have received numerous grants to fund equipping the club rooms. These grants include a $10,000 Federal Stronger Communities Grant, an $18,000 VESEP grant, a $5,000 Geelong Foundation Grant, a $150,000 Building Better Regions Grant as well as generous sponsorships and donations from the community. We also received an election commitment from Sarah Henderson that a re-elected Morrison Government would provide

Page 8: 66th Annual Report 2018/19oceangroveslsc.asn.au/edit/annual_reports/2019... · fortunate to have Chris Paterson step into the VP role, with Simone White transferring from the Social

$135,000 to fund the installation of Surf Craft Storage Racks in the new building. This commitment is being actively pursued.

There has been an enormous amount of work done by the Building Subcommittee to make the clubroom redevelopment a reality. The Committee comprised me, Chris Paterson, Steve Peatling and Jeff Newton. I would like to thank them for their commitment and hard work in not only lobbying for funding but being intimately involved in the design and implementation of the build. The total project cost for the Surf Beach Complex upon completion will exceed $9 million, whilst OGSLSC’s Clubrooms will cost in excess of $6 million. We are grateful of the support from all levels of government which has been excellent, with OGSLSC having to find less than 10% of the total cost for fully equipped and furnished clubrooms which will set a new standard for Life Saving Clubs in Victoria.

With the new clubrooms handed over and ready to be fitted out and furnished, the future looks bright for our club, given the quality of people in our membership base. The newly redeveloped clubrooms offer excellent opportunities for enhanced hospitality services to members as well as fundraising opportunities for the club.

Late last year, Steph Asher indicated to the board that she intended to resign as Vice-President. Steph is an extremely hard working Councillor for the City of Greater Geelong and I would like to thank her for

her contribution on the board over the past two years. In January, Nick Bohan and Donna Greeves resigned as Treasurer and Senior Competition Manager respectively. Nick has greatly contributed to club life over many years as a Nipper Coach, a carnival official and as Treasurer. Donna held the role of Senior Competition manager for six months and with the assistance of Simone Bohan was largely responsible for the roll out of Team App for senior competitors which has proved to be a good communication tool for coaches and competitors alike.

The resignations of Nick and Donna resulted in a few challenges for the board, but I am pleased to say that their replacements have been equal to the task and have done an excellent job to ensure that the club ran smoothly for the remainder of the season.

After seeking expressions of interest for the three vacant board positions, the club was fortunate to have Chris Paterson step into the VP role, with Simone White transferring from the Social Manager position to the General Board Member Role and John Fitzgerald being appointed to the board as Social Manager. The board appointed Bruce Honey to the Senior Competition Manager’s role and Jeff Ames as Treasurer. Bruce has done an outstanding job taking on this role mid-season and ensuring that surf sport was successfully managed through the busiest time of the season. Though Jeff is relatively new to the club, he has a wealth of business experience and has hit the ground running and has been a key figure involved in strategic planning for the business model for the new building. Jeff has also been able to carefully monitor cash flows to ensure the club could meet its obligations when final payments were due for the construction of the new clubrooms.

This year, a lot of work has been done by Board members including Steph Asher, Lyndie Freestone, Chris Paterson, Simone White and myself to update the Club Code of Conduct and the Bylaws so that they align with our club constitution and the various policies of SLSA and LSV. This work often goes unnoticed but is essential that procedures and policies are kept up to date and members are aware of the expectations of the OGSLSC code of conduct. There have been a number of grievance issues this year and having up to date policies in this area has allowed the club to process these issues smoothly. A group led by Steph Asher, Simone White and Ros Williamson reviewed the club’s strategic plan which helps provide a framework for future board decisions and priorities. Thank you to all who contributed in this area.

To our many sponsors and donors, thank you for your support over the 2018-19 season. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. I would encourage all our members to look up our sponsors on the club website and please support the local businesses that support your club.

Congratulations to Bruce Honey for being awarded the John Bishop Best Clubman award for outstanding service to the club during the 2018-19 season. We also acknowledge those other members who were nominated for this award, for all their hard work during the season.

Thank you to past presidents Steve Peatling and Chris Paterson for their advice and support during my presidency. I would like to thank Sue Howell, for her support during the past 12 years on the Club Board. Her patience and quiet support is greatly appreciated. As I indicated last year, my aim was to see the new Building delivered and then stand down as President. After 12 years on the committee of management, and three years as President, it is time to step down. I am proud of what has been achieved with the successful delivery of the new club rooms and record numbers of patrol and sport participants which is a testament to the strength of OGSLSC.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to our dedicated Club Board for their work throughout the year. The support that you provided both to me and to the club has been much appreciated.

Vice President – Chris Paterson

Having stepped into this position mid-way through the season from the General Committee position I would firstly like to thank Stephanie Asher for her considerable work for the Club and the Committee in this position before me.

One of Stephanie and other members of the Committee’s primary aims was the delivery of the Strategic Plan, a critical tool to help guide the club through the considerable change expected over the next few years. The Committee adopted this plan early in the season and I’m confident its content will help guide us well into the next phase of the club’s operations.

Another significant body of work undertaken over the past few years and delivered within the season was the new Constitution and By Laws, both of which have now been adopted by the club. You will see various references to “The Board” in this year’s report and this is now the structure outlined in the new Constitution which replaces the old Committee of Management. These documents have taken over three years to complete and a huge vote of thanks needs to be given to the Subcommittee comprising Stephanie Asher, Lyndie Freestone, Anna McDonald, Sandy Paterson, Chris Paterson, David Pavia, Libby Sampson, Ros Williamson and Simone White for their completion.

Having now put many of these strategy and compliance documents into place the club is well positioned to focus on the major operational changes that the next few years will bring, and this leads me to the new building.

Having been involved in this project since its inception around nine years ago it is with extreme pleasure that I note in this year’s Annual Report the delivery of this milestone project for the club. We will cover the detail of the project in a separate report but it would be remiss of me to not thank the other members of the Building subcommittee, David Pavia, Jeff Newton and Steve Peatling and now the Building Operations Sub Committee, Jeff Ames, Lyndie Freestone, John Fitzgerald, Sally Hunt, Scott McNaughton, Chris Paterson, David Pavia, Steve Peatling and Ros Williamson who now have a significant task ahead to provide the framework around which the new complex will operate.

As I’m sure everybody is aware, we still have a lot of work to do in relation to the final fit out of the building, but I know you will agree it will all be worth it as we present what I believe will be the finest surf lifesaving club facilities on the Victorian coast. It also means we will have some amazing new facilities and equipment to utilise as we move into the 2019/20 season and I have no doubt this will see considerable growth in our fantastic Nipper program, our Summer and Winter

Competition program and of greatest importance our core delivery of surf life saving training and beach patrol services.

Chairman Building Sub Committee – Chris Paterson

In 2011 as President I wrote the following in the Annual Report. “Discussions are well progressed with Barwon Coast and the committee will be presenting initial plans to the membership at this year’s AGM”

Who would have known it would take eight years for me to be able to follow that statement up with the following….

It is with great pleasure that as part of the 2018/19 Annual Report the Building Sub Committee can deliver the brand-new Surf Beach Complex to the members of OGSLSC and the Community of Ocean Grove. This is our third clubhouse complex, with the first built by the members around 1956, the second opening in 1995 and now our biggest and most well-equipped facility in 2019. As some of you have heard me state, this parallels the growth of our club, with our original membership of approximately 12, the 1995 membership of around 300 and our current figure of approximately 1000.

The complex is a result of multiple funding commitments with the primary OGSLSC breakdown including the following.

Victorian State Government $4,275,000.00

Federal Government $1,160,000.00

City of Greater Geelong $150,000.00

This has of course been added to with club and member contributions and an ever-increasing list of sponsors and private donations. Of specific note we must thank the Hon Lisa Neville MP and the outgoing Liberal member Sarah Henderson for their significant contribution and support for the project. The overall cost of the Ocean Grove SLSC component of the complex is in the vicinity of $5.7m, with a further $600,000.00 still being sourced to complete the fit out.

Additional thanks need to go to Wood Marsh Architects, with the team lead by Roger Wood and Clara Friedhoff providing a stunning architecturally and operationally suitable facility. We also thank Root Partnerships our Project Managers led by Tim Eerhard and Will Hughes along with Ireland Brown Builders and the numerous other associated trades and service providers and finally our co-tenants Barwon Coast and The Dunes restaurant.

As we take possession of the facility I urge members to have patience as we set up the new systems that will allow us to utilise the complex to its best advantage and complete the final stages of fit out.

Honorary Secretary – Lyndie Freestone

It is with pleasure that the Board of Management present for your consideration and adoption the 66th Annual Report of the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated.

As my third year as Secretary draws to a close I continue to be aware of the level of hard work that goes on across every aspect of the club by so many people.

Our ongoing and amazing successes in the sporting area of the club have been outlined and acknowledged by other board members in their reports, however I send my congratulations to all those who trained so very hard to get these wonderful results, to all the coaches who continue to give above and beyond and to the parents who give their support in a multitude of ways. I celebrate the achievements of all those who contributed in the face of the huge challenge of having no club rooms to either store equipment, to shower and change or to simply come together as a club outside of the training, comp and transport context. I’m sure the parents’ lament was “not another trip to the beach with another board/ ski!”

It is a testimony to the resilience of our members and again highlights the team effort it takes to allow the club to survive and thrive when faced with adversity. However through some of the challenges that arose during the year the importance of member wellbeing has been highlighted as has the need to have clear strategies, structures and processes in place to support this aspect of the club as the club grows. While our core business is to keep our beach and those who visit it safe, the other major aspect of being part of the club is the sense of belonging and being part of a lifesaving community.

As David mentioned, a lot of work that I flagged in my report last year has been done to complete the revised Constitution, By Laws and Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct in particular has amalgamated a number of individual Codes of Conduct (i.e. Surf Sport, IRB, Patrol, Nippers, Board of Management) into a single document that clearly outlines the

behavioural framework and expectations for all our members (including the Board, coaches, young people, parents and anyone who is involved in any way with OGSLSC). We have also completed a Club Manual that is available on the website and can be printed out in hard copy. It is a comprehensive guide to all areas of the club that aims to give all members ready access to the same information and communication across the club.

The Safeguarding Children and Young People guidelines and legal requirements have been integrated into these documents, as well as into policies and procedures. Stating the obvious, Safeguarding Children and Young People is all about keeping our young people safe. OGSLSC along with Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) and Life Saving Victoria (LSV) is committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of all its members and especially of children and young people, and is dedicated to providing a welcoming, safe, supportive and inclusive environment for those participating in surf lifesaving events, services, programs or activities. Integrating the

Page 14

Safeguarding Children and Young People guidelines and legal requirements into our revised Constitution and By Laws and developing more detailed Codes of Conduct sets out a clear framework for meeting these expectations.

Over the last two season we introduced the concept of a member well-being team to support people in all areas of the club, however this has not really progressed as far as I would have liked. This is something that will be revisited and developed across the club for next season as a way of putting the support and safeguarding principles into practice. My thanks go out to Bruce Sampson who stepped into the Membership Protection Officer role and has provided a huge amount of support to various members from within that role. It has been great working with him and others to help support the wellbeing of our members.

As the club grows it is clear that a team approach is needed and that there needs to be extra roles dedicated to both our member well-being and our leadership development. This is something that has been well supported by the Board and as a result there has been a new Member Well-Being and Leadership Development officer role developed (and outlined in the By Laws that were circulated to members with the AGM call for nominations). This role will work closely with the MPO, the Youth Leadership and Development Officer, the Training and Assessment officer, Club Captain, the Board, coaches, young people and parents to develop a club-wide strategy to promote both member well-being and leadership development opportunities as an integral part of the 2019/20 Strategic Plan.

I also flagged in last year’s report the need to revisit our induction of new members and to the new season, but with the absence of clubrooms this was difficult to achieve. Over the coming months I will be calling upon parents and young people to help think about how we achieve this as well as getting input into the club Strategic Plan to help identify goals and objectives and to help plan for a strong and positive sense of community that goes beyond our lovely new bricks and mortar.

In reference to our wonderful new building, this too is a testimony to a level of commitment by a small group of people over a number of years who have put in an insane number of hours (David Pavia, Chris Paterson, Steve Peatling, and Jeff Newton). I have been privileged to work alongside them since coming onto the Board and to witness the intensity of the work required to get this project done. However there is still much work to be done. As anyone who has ever built a house knows, getting a house to lock up doesn’t mean it’s finished! So we ask for your patience and understanding in that while the walls are there the inside is not ready for full use or equipment storage. We will keep you updated on the progress.

I will be stepping down as Secretary this year but am putting my hand up for the Vice President – Operations role to help progress and support both the member wellbeing and operations of the club. Thank you to my board of management colleagues and to all those who have given feedback, support and ideas over the last year. I really value and appreciate it.

Finally I want to thank David for his tireless work on the Board during the past 12 years as President and Secretary prior to that. His commitment to the club on so many levels including on the board, the building subcommittee, the beach and beyond is amazing! What has been achieved on both the micro and macro levels for the club is a credit to him. Lyndie Freestone

Lifesaving Operations Manager – Lewis Howell-Pavia

I would like to thank the Ocean Grove Surf Club and all its members for the support they have shown me in my second season as the Lifesaving Operations Manager or Club Captain of Ocean Grove.

I would also like to thank all members for their contribution to the smooth and largely uneventful season we have had ensuring the safety of hundreds of thousands of beachgoers on one of Victoria’s busiest beaches.

This season we maintained ten patrols. While at times this was a logistical challenge, it was a success. It gave us the opportunity to develop the skills of new patrol captains Isabel Greer, Ryan Wilson and Kyle Solterbeck. In addition, we had several members step up as acting patrol captains: Felicity Abfalter, Orlagh Davison, Lucy Conquit, Nicholas Giblin and Cameron Phillips.

The new patrol tower has been a huge success, as anyone who has been inside it can attest to. This is a state of the art patrol facility that offers fantastic visibility and protection from

Page 16: 66th Annual Report 2018/19oceangroveslsc.asn.au/edit/annual_reports/2019... · fortunate to have Chris Paterson step into the VP role, with Simone White transferring from the Social

the elements to ensure patrollers are given the best vantage point on the beach. It allows for rapid response times and excellent first aid facilities.

It has certainly been a challenge to operate out of shipping containers this season. The excellent work performed by the facilities manager Steve Peatling and his team, including roofing the space between containers and ventilating them, minimised the inconvenience. I am so impressed by the way that the patrol members adapted to these difficult circumstances and continued to deliver first-rate patrol services on the beach. For that I would like to once again thank the patrol captains and their teams.

I would like to particularly thank the following people:

• Our training group led by Bec Sampson. Bec has performed incredibly well and has ensured that all our patrolling members have the skills that are required of them. Without these awards and the requals Bec arranges we cannot keep the beach safe.

• The maintenance team of Vince Occhipinti, Peter Baxter and Brayden Allan, for keeping all the IRBs, vehicles and patrol gear in top condition throughout the season.

• Simone White for ensuring that first aid supplies were restocked and updated during the year.

• To Bill Strachan, thanks for all your support again this year and everything you are continuing to do in the background.

• To Bo Chudosnik, for continuing to conduct patrol inspections while acting as a statewide patrol auditor – auditing nine patrol locations twice each in addition to all the Ocean Grove patrols. This is an enormous effort and we are so lucky to have someone as skilled, experienced and willing to assist as Bo. This is not a job that one person can continue to do – I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in doing this role for the club or LSV to get in touch with Bo.

I would like to congratulate the following patrol award winners:

The Fred Leiper Best Patrol Person, awarded to Georgia Cashin

Georgia has stepped up time and again every season. She continues to improve on her knowledge and abilities every time she comes back to the club. She has a wealth of skills and experience which she does not hesitate to share with all members of patrol, in particular at Bronze and SRC Week. Every time I see Georgia on patrol, she is explaining something to or instructing more inexperienced members of the patrol. She does not hesitate to ask whenever there is anything she is uncertain about. She is a role model for all patrolling

members – proactive, educating, inspired and always fun to be around on a long day of patrol.

Bob Millett Most Improved Lifesaver, awarded to Orlagh Davison

Orlagh has really stepped up this season, into a leadership position she was not asked to take but excelling in that role. She has thoroughly impressed Bo, me and many others with her strong decision making, calm method of leadership and great personality. She has done an amazing job as a patrol captain and she is an integral part of any team. She will excel in anything she applies herself to.

The Dave Renton Patrol Service award, won by Wes Prosser

Wes gave the club an incredible 119 hours of patrol, made up entirely of beach patrol hours. It is a testament to how much Wes has contributed this season. In addition, Wes completed 17 hours of beach patrol at other clubs – an incredible performance that really shows the amazing sense of community present in surf lifesaving.

Best Patrol, awarded to Isabelle Greer’s Patrol 3

Patrol 3 performed best in the club’s internal Patrol Competition, which includes lifesaving skills, first aid and general patrol operating procedures. Patrol 3 scored a perfect score in the patrol competition. It’s worth noting that the lowest score by any Ocean Grove patrol was 97.5%.

I do not intend to nominate for this role next season. It has been a privilege to act as the Lifesaving Operations Manager for Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club. I am starting a diploma in Aviation which in addition to my work for Melbourne Grammar school will leave me with less time than this role requires. I wish to thank all who have helped and supported me during my time as Club Captain/Lifesaving Operations Manager.

Competition Manager – Bruce Honey

Season 2018-19 was another very successful one for the competitive sections of the club. Before I start, I would like to thank Simone and Donna for their hard work and effort taken to run the competition team for the first half of the year and for the systems put in place to help manage this season successfully, and also for the support they provided me when I took over this role.

Surf life saving competition covers many seasons: the Summer Surf Sports season, Boats, Masters, the IRB season, and the Pool Life Saving season. Each of these disciplines exists to improve competitors’ fitness and skills so they are better prepared to help keep beachgoers safe on the beaches we patrol.

This season was particularly hard on competitors. With no club, no warm showers, no communal gathering space and no protection it made training quite difficult at times. It was also hard for those people transporting them and their gear to and from training. We had whales turning up on the beach dictating where we could and couldn’t train. I saw parents hiding in cars as the conditions were so bad they wouldn’t get out of their car, while their kids trained in the ocean. We also saw skis and boards flying in the wind and bouncing off cars in the carpark as tired athletes tried to lift and tie their craft down after a hard session with no racks to store their craft. This was hard for all: the nippers, the seniors, the masters and the IRB team, training through a bitterly cold winter. The ski trailer was stolen and there were skis that needed to be replaced at the expense of the families, but members of the club worked out ways for the athletes to train, skis were lent and borrowed so that people didn’t miss out - a true sign of our great club.

Although it was hard, cold and tough, our Ocean Grove competitors are tougher. Each one still trained, trying harder, not letting it get them down. Communal trailers were set up by coaches - thanks Billy and Sonia for the countless trips with trailers to and from training sessions this season. There were more IRBs and motors squeezed into containers than you could imagine. All these boards, skis, IRBs and boats were moved, tied down, stacked, towed, shifted and restacked so many times, and the competitors did it in the sunshine, in the cold and in the wet pouring rain. In true Ocean Grove spirit they just got it done and every one of them should be proud. They will all be rewarded soon with some great new facilities.

At the start of this season we had only a few pool competitors, as training and most competition was in Melbourne, but those who competed in the pool did extremely well.

We had two members selected in state teams which was a huge achievement:

● SLSA Pool Life Saving State team - Australia Championships (August 2018) - Campbell Greeves

● RLSSA Australian Pool Championships Vic team (January 2019) - Mac Hooper

Following on from their great success, recently we had 18 people entered in the first senior pool competition held for the season and we hope to continue this in upcoming pool carnivals.

This summer season we had strong teams at all surf carnivals and in the end we had 58 senior competitors at Victorian State Championships.

Training began way back in July 2018 for this season. The Annual Club Training Camp was again held in early September at Lorne SLSC, with nearly 50 competitors. The training program included basics and skills for transition board paddlers and the new ski paddlers. More experienced competitors were extended both physically and skill-wise. It finished off with the traditional cross-age Taplin race on Sunday morning where there was lots of yelling, screaming and cheering and Ocean Grove was the winner through and through. The camp marked the end of the general off-season training and the commencement of a full program of pre-season training and coming together as a team.

Once more we brought through a really strong transition group (those moving out of Nippers and on to racing mals). They were exposed to a lot of changes from LSV this season - what an interesting year for them! First they were

told they would just be competing as seniors, then that they were competing as nippers and then had to attend most of the senior carnivals and two nippers carnivals. They handled the changes well and excelled at every opportunity. We had a wide range of competitors including those who had only just tried a board or ski or never really swum in the ocean all the way to those who had won medals at state championships. We had beginner, intermediate and elite, all coming together to make up the Ocean Grove SLSC team.

The first carnival for the season was back on the 10th of November. Ocean Grove was well represented at the Endurance Championships and came away with some excellent results. Ocean Grove even managed to host a carnival in December without clubrooms which was a great achievement and a credit to all those who helped organise it. There were numerous carnivals throughout the season, some with big surf, some with small surf and even some with half eaten seals just off to the side of the competition areas. We consistently managed to have teams of approx. 50 competitors at most carnivals, and at our biggest carnival we had 63 competitors pulling on the blue and yellow cap. We had a number of competitors compete in the Ocean6 series against the best in Australia. The conditions were challenging and some came away with medals and some came back understanding what they had to work hard on, but we saw that with hard work we can compete with the best.

We had about 30 athletes make the trip to Manly Freshwater this year with some amazing results across the board from the U15’s winning the Aqua Cam at Freshwater all the way through the older age groups where after the first race, people were heard talking about who some of these Victorians were so they could watch out for them in the next races. Across the season there was some great results, and there was also some disappointments and tears, but most importantly people learnt, and got better. The individual results were great but even more importantly the team results were second to none, with many people competing up and across ages to make sure everyone had a chance to compete.

Results from the Victorian State Championships speak of another great season for OGSLSC. It was our third victory in a row with 662 points, a winning margin of over 300 points.

1. Ocean Grove 662.5 2. Jan Juc 349.5 3. Half Moon Bay 293 4. Warrnambool 290 5. Torquay 246

Carnival results are available on the LSV website.

As Sonia always says, this is a team effort. This is true across the whole season, every single competitor, whether in an A or a D team, whether U14, over 70, Open, medal winner or not. Everyone makes a contribution. This is the essence of a team and a specialty at OGSLSC. This was proven at Senior States this year where every one of the 58 competitors earnt points for the club, from the most seasoned competitors to the three U14 competitors who were in their first year of surf life saving. It is a massive achievement and something every one of us at OGSLSC should be proud of.

Aussies this year marked the end of the summer, and we sent a strong team of 35 to the Gold Coast. I wasn’t able to make it but by all reports and from watching numerous hours on the live feed while in a car, at home and in meetings at work, the conditions were testing even for seasoned competitors. There were broken skis and boards and that was in the warm ups. The Youth team made it through finals in board, swim and cameron events and a number of individuals made finals. The Masters brought home three medals and we were well represented in numerous finals. The seniors team made finals across all age groups with some amazing racing, in teams and individual events. It proves that OGSLSC is consistently strong across all ages.

Boats

Unfortunately due to holidays, injuries and limited crew numbers, we only had full boat crew for the start of the season, They competed well when together. Thank you to Paul Scherf for the time spent coaching and working with these crews this season.

IRB

The 2018-19 IRB Team has grown in ability, come together and excelled. There were four carnivals this season. Each carnival we had at least five crews ready to race. The carnival at Ocean Grove in May 2019 was a great example of what the OG team although small in comparison to some can do in big surf and terrible conditions. The carnival was cancelled due to safety reasons, not because of our racing teams’ ability, which was sensational. The cans kept moving and the patient boats couldn’t get patients out safely so they couldn’t race.

At Warrnambool the conditions were flat and the sun was shining - not what you’d usually expected of an IRB championship at Warrnambool. All teams except mine made it through to semis, and four teams to the finals. All competitors should be proud of their achievements and the club should be proud of its small team of competitors and their commitment to the sport and to refining their skills. OG came 8th overall at States. States finished with a wreath laying ceremony to remember those who lost their lives at Port Campbell. The IRB team would also like to acknowledge the generous sponsorship of Elementary Financial, who assist with running costs for the team.

Masters

Our Masters Team finished 6th this year with 190 points, down from last years placing, but still a very respectable effort. There were some great results and we had four new Masters compete this year. Masters competition has a focus on enjoyment along with serious training for those who choose to. There were some superb performances from those who had been training hard. Most importantly this is a great day of competition and fun. To help raise OGSLSC up from 6th we need more OGSLC members to step up and compete. Are you

ready to make a long awaited comeback? Or are you a first time competitor (like some nipper parents this year)? Training starts now!

A season like this doesn’t just happen; it takes a lot of people and a lot of effort. On behalf of all the competitors, in all teams, I would like to thank the following:

• The team and area managers, for Masters, IRB and seniors • Those who helped load and unload trailers, set up and packed up tents • Those who have done LSV set up and pack up duties • Those who carried double skis and other gear up and down beaches • Those who carried IRB’s motors up and down beaches • Those who drove our teams and towed trailers to all ends of the state and into others • The parents and supporters for getting the athletes ready and to training • The officials, marshalls, starters and recorders. We can’t do it without you • The water safety crew, sitting out in Ducks for numerous hours, or running around in

the dark setting up ready to lay the courses at first light • The Board who have supported all that we do in competition

Thanks to our many coaches

● To Bruce Sampson for the work he does with the transition board group ● To Mushie and Bruce Sampson for running sessions for our Melbourne competitors

sessions in Williamstown ● To Nick and Brayden for their work coaching the IRB team ● To Billy – whose work with our ski paddlers was again so well rewarded with states

medals this year. Watching the first year paddlers at states in those ski relays was a great display of what he has achieved

● To Paul Sherf for all the work with our boat crews early in the season ● To Sonia, who, as always, puts in an amazing amount of effort (up to 8 sessions a

week) with the team, organised and got the competitors to local carnivals and on the Manly/Freshwater carnival trip. Sonia looked like she was running a board transport company for most of the year and we may have got her in trouble with the body corporate as well. Sonia is both coach and beach mum to a lot of the crew.

Finally, thank you to each and every competitor

● For your amazing dedication to this sport ● For the time and effort you put into improving your skills and ability to support our

club’s goal of keeping beachgoers safe on our beaches ● For being great people who make this club such a great place to be around

See you all on the sand soon

Junior Activities Manager – Darren Ball

With a shorter season it was thought things may be a little less busy but alas it wasn’t. Hectic may be an appropriate word to describe the season but it was very successful on all fronts. With no Club House to call as a home base it logistically made times a little tougher and uncomfortable but in true Nipper style things were made to work.

Planning began early as Nipper numbers were expected to increase with a focus on development of new and younger members. A Nipper sub-committee was formed to plan for the future, not just the season ahead. Thank you for your support and tireless efforts this season, without your help the season would not have been as successful as it was. Roles:

• Assistant JAM – Amenah McDonald • Surf Sport Coordinator – Konrad Slavinskis • Assistant Surf Sport Coordinator – Peter Walsh • Administration Manager – Janine Paranavitana

Additional coaches were sourced and a focus on their development and that of potential future coaches was a key aim. This season saw more coaches involved than ever before. It was a fantastic effort by all of our team, thank you for your dedication and direction.

Under 8’s - Adam Foord & Stephanie Twaits

Under 9’s – Nick Watson

Under 10’s – Brendan Confoy, Scott Crabtree & Dave Hanks

Under 11’s – Amenah McDonald, Konrad Slavinskis & Ross Punchard

Under 12’s – Shane Bird

Under 13’s – Joffa Young

The Surf Sport program is a great way for the Nippers to increase their surf lifesaving skills, keep fit and represent the OGSLSC at LSV carnivals and the State Championships. Training is held on Friday nights and Sunday mornings, with an additional endurance session held on Tuesday evenings for Under 11 to Under 13 age groups.

Nipper numbers increased in the Sports space with an average of 110 Nippers attending the Friday & Sunday training sessions. Despite three of the six LSV carnivals being cancelled, Nippers were very enthusiastic and the remaining carnivals were well attended, with an average of 105 nippers attending. OGSLSC did not host a junior carnival this season due to not having clubrooms.

The Surf Ed Program was once again incredibly well attended with over 320 children participating in the program. Surf Ed also provided an opportunity for young aspiring coaches to have an introduction to coaching requirements. Surf Ed is run over six sessions in late December/early January and combines surf awareness and beach safety, as well as developing new skills and making new friends.

The Surf Ed activities are introduced in a fun and safe atmosphere and provide Nippers with the basic lifesaving skills appropriate to their age. Great feedback was received from Nippers and parents alike – again a fantastic effort by all the volunteers who supported the running of the Surf Ed program.

A special “thank you” to Julia Hemingway who has the role of Surf Ed Coordinator for a third time this year. Julia was fantastically supported by Xeni Pages and Al Spry. Thank you ladies for all your help and early organization - it was very much appreciated.

Another highlight of the season was Club Champs. It was a fantastic day, well coordinated and planned by Peter Walsh & Konrad Slavinskis. Set up and run like a proper carnival, the kids had a fantastic time. Thanks to Cam McDonald from Geelong Boating Centre who donated anchors and his time, setting up the rigs to the buoys for the four water areas.

With the Under 14’s being removed from the Nipper program, OGSLSC had 94 attend at the State Championship at Lorne. Day 1 had little waves and the program was largely centered around beach events. The younger age groups were rushed through events to allow for water events due to inclement weather forecast for Day 2. Unfortunately Day 2 weather led to the cancellation of the majority of water events particularly for the older age groups. At the end of two days OGSLSC were marginally in front on the points tally which included the Belt n Reel results from the previous Carnival at Lorne. To complete the points tally our biggest RnR team went to Williamstown, gaining some valuable points for the Club.

OGSLSC won the State Title for the second year running with 230 points, 11 points clear of Mornington and 62 points clear of Mentone. Congratulations to all our Nippers, coaches and volunteers for a fantastic result.

A big congratulations to James Leahy (u/13) who was awarded Nipper Water Competitor of the Year and to Pippi McIntyre (u/13) who was awarded Nipper Beach Competitor of the Year. Also congratulations to Will Deverall who was awarded an Engine award.

The upcoming season will see continue changes in structure and personnel but the focus remains the same - that we are training Nippers to be life savers first and sports people second. To do that the program requires dedicated volunteers from coaches to age group managers to sausage turners to tin rattlers.

A very special thank you to Adam & Helen Foord. This family has participated in Nipper for many years. Adam has coached the Under 8’s during my two years as JAM whilst having a child (Byron) in the older age groups. He has also consistently volunteered as an official at LSV Carnivals. Helen has been the Age Group Manager for Byron’s year group since Under 8’s. That is only a part representation of the volunteer time they have given to the Nipper Program over so many years. Good luck to Byron and all Under 13’s as they move up into the senior/youth programs.

Finally, a huge thank you to the parents who volunteer as IRB drivers/crew. This is something I have worked at achieving as a regular for our Nipper sessions. Thanks to Bruce Honey who helped drive the initial set up and first season and also to Andy Hallam who has taken on that role this season, ensuring the safety of our kids. To the Coaching team, Water Safety Officers, Age Managers, our Gear Stewards and all the other parents and helpers, your support has been tremendous. Without this support the Nippers program simply could not run – so thank you very much. Your passion and energy all helps create such a great Nippers program.

See you next season.

Sponsorship & Fundraising – Ros Williamson

Fundraising for OGSLSC has entered a new era with the construction of the new club facilities and associated changes in members’ and community expectations. As a club we need to raise an additional $300K to complete fit out of the new facilities as well as cover expenses in the order of $150K to operate the lifesaving club in the new building. To do this we need to:

• attract new members by marketing our new services and ongoing programs through word of mouth, our website and Facebook pages and our media presence;

• engage more members in identifying and implementing additional lucrative and creative fundraising activities;

• build additional grant application capability within the Club; • broaden our sponsor and donor base and • optimise use of our hospitality and training spaces for revenue generation when

not required for club operations.

We now have state of the art life saving operations facilities that will allow us to expand our existing surf education and beach safety programs and attract new members to the Club. For the first time, we also have hospitality facilities capable of meeting the needs of a significant number of social members as well as business and community groups for events.

All club members can contribute to marketing the club to attract new members, including social members. Every positive word and action can make a difference to individuals and groups considering using our facilities. People like to be invited – so members, please keep in mind who you could invite to join. For our club to be successful, we need everyone on board with this marketing effort.

With no home base available this season, opportunities for engaging members in fundraising outside of the regular activities of patrolling, training and competitions were limited. As a newcomer to OGSLSC and the Fundraising and Sponsorship role on the Board, I felt warmly welcomed by many members and very well supported by Anna McDonald, Arne Solterbeck and David Pavia in particular, throughout the year. I thank these people for their patience and guidance.

After a handover from David, Arne and Anna in July 2018, I invited all OCSLSC members to a workshop to identify opportunities and priorities for fundraising for the year ahead and 15 people attended. A Fundraising Sub Committee was formed to focus on these priorities in line with the OGLSC 2018 Strategic Plan. Thanks to David Pavia, Chris Paterson, John Fitzgerald, Fiona Topolcsanyi and Nick Bohan for their participation and advice in the subcommittee’s monthly meetings.

The Fundraising Priorities were grouped as below:

Sponsorship and Events:

Platinum, gold, silver and bronze sponsorship packages have been designed to attract all level of sponsors with a range of benefits which can be tailored according to business needs. Club members are invited to submit names and contact details of potential sponsors at any time and these will be followed up. A standardised contract template has been formalised to ensure everyone is clear about expectations. Information for prospective sponsors is posted on our website for easy reference.

We have been fortunate to continue with RT Edgar as our gold sponsor. They were principal sponsors of the Rip to River and will be supporting our 40th Rip to River in December 2019. In May 2019 Bellarine Psychology Services’s Dane Barclay signed as a gold sponsor for 2019/2020. Ocean Grove Real Estate offered us a $50 donation for every property appraisal completed in June. Their total donation of $1400 was very well timed.

Over 900 entrants participated in the 39th Rip to River on 29 December 2018, raising close to $35K for the Club.

Sponsorship was lacking for the 2019 Australia Day weekend Ocean Open Water Swim Festival although we had plenty of in-kind support. The event attracted close to 500 swimmers and used social media to reach our target audience and provide marketing coverage. A clash with the Cadel Evans ride and Geelong sailing club events will continue to potentially limit numbers unless we can work to market the swim as an additional opportunity for participants in those events as well as to the broader Melbourne market. The support from RT Edgar, Engine, and Kennards as well as a large number of members as volunteers was much appreciated.

Grants:

During 2018/2019 President David Pavia relentlessly pursued and applied for a raft of grant opportunities at all levels of government and through Geelong Foundation worth in excess of $600K. Grant applications were written to fund fit out of the new building. We are expecting to receive funding to complete the commercial kitchen with a 1:1 match as well as the craft storage racks. The training, gym and hospitality areas require significant funds and further grants are being investigated. We were successful with approximately 50% of applications, mainly due to the fierce competition in the not-for-profit sector.

Donations:

Donation tubs in retail outlets in our area raised about $1000 throughout the year. The annual caravan park collection was held on a Monday in mid January with the senior surf sports team plus Donna Greeves, Steph Asher, Nick Bohan, Anna McDonald, Ros and Kacey Williamson as collectors. Collections totalled close to $1400 which this was lower than expected, perhaps due to being late in the day and the season. We propose to conduct a collection again earlier in January and earlier in the day.

The Annual Community Door knock was supported by just 14 families this year and collected $2340. Given that many people were not home or did not have cash on hand, the ongoing viability of this door knock is questionable. A fundraising campaign seeking donations online or by direct debit was launched in time for the handover and tour of the new building in May. More individual donations are being sought via our website. Donations of $5K and above gain Gold Donor status. To date we have the following Gold Donors: McKelvie family, Rotary Club OG, A & N Young, Rolam P/L and K Williamson.

Ongoing Valuable Supporters:

In addition to a dedicated group of members including Board members, the following organisations have provided valuable in-kind support to the Club over the past year:

• Terrace Pizza Shop • Christians Buses

• Paxton Press • Kennards Hire

• Davidsons Accounting • Ocean Grove Voice

• Pagination

If you are interested in organising any fundraising events, joining the fundraising subcommittee or would otherwise like to discuss any ideas regarding sponsorship or fundraising please call me on 0422002536 or email: [email protected] OGSLSC needs YOUR help!

Social and Lounge Manager Report – John Fitzgerald

The summer season of 2018/2019 has been light on for social events due to the lack of a clubhouse.

Our one and only event was the club Presentation Night, enjoyed by all members and guests at the 13th Beach Golf Club. I would like to extend congratulations to all award recipients for recognition of hard work and commitment to volunteering their time in lifesaving duties, and for training long hours to be better in the surf and on the beach. A big thank you to Amenah, Chris, Lyndie, Anna and David for Presentation Night. Your combined efforts made the night run like clockwork. I also wish to thank the Board for their outstanding performances in all aspects of their roles and the support shown to me and fellow members. Your hard work is much appreciated.

Exciting times lie ahead with the clubhouse now being handed over to us. We have the finishing touches coming soon in the upstairs lounge area, kitchen and bar. Stay tuned for Opening Night - it will be an event to remember! If you have any suggestions about what you think would be entertaining for our season ahead, send me a message or talk to me or a Board member.

GO GROVE!!

Facilities Manager – Steve Peatling

The 2018-19 season has been a very challenging year for everyone given the fact that we have had to operate the whole season without a clubhouse. I commend everyone for their patience and ability to adapt to the challenges this presented. It has meant lots of hours of travel and transportation of surf craft for all our surf sport competitor and no warm showers for Seniors and Nippers alike. As hard as this has been, there is now a big bright light at the end of the tunnel, with the new clubrooms being something of which all members can be proud.

Having said this, we still have a way to go with the fitting out of the club. The patience of members is going to be crucial while we get this done in an efficient and timely manner. Rest assured that your board and building subcommittees are working extremely hard to secure funding to have the fitting out completed ASAP.

Part of the first stages of fit out will be the installation of surf craft racking, which we are hoping to have ready in late August to early September. I understand that members will be eager to store their craft at the Surf Club, but I would urge everyone to have patience. The end result will be a racking system that will be far superior in ergonomics and will greatly reduce the risk of damage to craft. Many Clubs around Sydney have this system installed and it comes highly recommended.

Another high priority is the completion of our hospitality areas. This is a crucial part of the new surf club operations and will hopefully secure our financial viability for the future. Again plans are under way and your Board and sub committees are working hard to get these areas up and running. These are incredibly exciting times for our great club and I for one am greatly looking forward to all the benefits that will be provided to members.

Part of my job is going to be the reporting of defects over the first 12 months, an unavoidable aspect of a new building. We will be setting up a database for all faults to be listed. I encourage members to be active in the reporting of any issues to make sure that we get these sorted out during the warranty period of the building. Once the database is set up, we will provide a link on the website so that members can directly report any issues that they notice during their use of the club.

Thanks again to all our members for the patience shown over the last 12 months without a building and to all the help that has gone into the move out of the old facility and into the new one. Thanks also to the 2018-19 Board and the various sub committees for their tireless work this season to keep the club ticking over for patrols and surf sport activities. Thanks to all our coaches, parents, competitors and patrollers for a great season under trying circumstances.

See you all in the water.

Training & Assessment Manager – Bec Sampson

As always, it’s been a busy year in Training and Assessment, with the added challenge we’ve all faced, of having no clubhouse. Finding alternative arrangements to house nearly 150 hours of training courses was definitely interesting at times, but we certainly didn’t let it stop us.

This season we’ve run an Adult Bronze course, an IRB Crew and Driver course with record numbers, a Bronze & SRC camp, a First Aid, ART and Spinal Management course. This totalled over 130 new awards for the season. Congratulations to all our new award holders, and a massive thank you to all our amazing Trainers and Assessors! Whether it is rain, hail, 50km/h winds, or shine, our T&A team are always willing to put their hand up to help.

An area that continues to grow each year is the Adult Bronze course. It has been so great to see more and more parents getting involved, and so great to watch as these parents migrate into all other areas of the club. They go on to complete other awards like IRB Crew, or compete at Masters, or take on coaching roles in surf sports. Over the next few years we look forward to building on our current Adult Training Program, to hopefully start making other awards including First Aid, ART, and Spinal Management awards more accessible to the parents of OGSLSC.

This year we had the largest Bronze & SRC Camp ever, with over 60 participants, and nearly 20 instructors. While we were initially nervous about operating out of a different venue, the Ocean Grove Football and Cricket club turned out to be a fantastic location. Without a doubt it was one of the most enjoyable years for both participants and trainers. We absolutely loved seeing how much fun all the kids had, and the trainers too. The annual Bronze & SRC week video, for those who were lucky enough to see it at the end of the

week, captured the hilarious contrast between the action packed water sessions, the long afternoons in the classrooms doing bookwork, and of course the frantic sprint to get to the start of the lunch queue… running out of food was never a problem though! A special mention must go to our incredible Bronze and SRC Week instructors this year, who give up not only seven days of their school holidays to volunteer in the running of this camp, but do so with enthusiasm, dedication, and always a big smile on their faces. Integrating a leadership development program into our Bronze & SRC Week over these past 3 years has been a big step forward for us a club, helping us to foster the next generation of OGSLSC leaders. We are seeing the rewards from this program already and we are so excited to see where this takes us in the future.

General Board Member – Simone White

Whilst I had held the First Aid Officer, OHS Officer and Social Media Administrator roles for over 4 years I had not yet contributed at a Board level. This season I decided to dip my toes in and nominate for the Social and Lounge Manager position to learn more about the club.

Without a physical club this season there wasn’t a great deal of work to be done in the social space but It soon became apparent that there was a huge amount of work to be done in the governance, policy development and systems/processes space. This was perfect as these are some of my key areas of interest and areas I regularly engage in professionally.

With some unexpected Board positions vacated mid term I took the opportunity to move across into the General Member position so that I could focus more solidly on the areas listed above. With so much going on in the club and new distractions arising almost every day it can be hard for the Board to maintain focus. My goal was to maintain the focus and drive the completion of a number of significant pieces of work.

These included the Bylaws, Code of Conduct and Strategic Plan. These 3 critical documents showcase who we are, what we do and why we do it. They guide practice and procedures and drive excellence. They provide governance and a clear direction moving forward. They also set the standards required to help us reach success and our goals as a whole Club. I wish to acknowledge the great work that Steph Asher did in the initial development of the 2018/19 Strategic Plan.

With the new multimillion dollar Surf Club complex finally coming to fruition Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club no longer a small club in an old building. We expect to see our membership almost double once doors open and we will be managing a state of the art facility, with commercial elements. This is why it is crucial to have established systems, processes, policies and procedures and the right people in the right jobs.

Some other documents that I developed throughout my term were the Board Meeting Terms of Reference, Event Planning Template, Event Budget Template and Complaints Register. I also undertook some work on refreshing existing documents which included introducing a new format to the OG-Land Newsletter and delivering newsletters

monthly over the peak season; and reformatting the AGM Nomination Form.

Together as a team, the Board all contributed to the completion and ratification of the above-named documents. With these documents now complete, the incoming Board can focus their attention on our core business, the clear direction that has been set and on settling into the new building and hopefully taking the Club to a new level of success.

Recognition is extended to everyone on the Board for their time, effort and genuine devotion to the Club. Hundreds and hundreds of hours have been put in collectively throughout the year and together we achieved so much.

Thanks must also be extended to all Officers of the Club and other volunteers who put hours in each week to keep their sections of the club ticking over. Your contributions don’t go unnoticed and are very much appreciated.

See you on the beach.... or in the amazing new first aid room!!

Honorary Treasurer – Jeff Ames

It is with pleasure that the financial statements are presented for Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club for year ending 31st May 2019. These audited statements show an accurate financial record of the club’s operations for the financial year 2018/19.

2018/19 has been both a challenging and exciting year for the club. The building of our fantastic new clubrooms has made key events such Nippers and Rip to River harder to manage yet have been delivered incredibly well thanks to the hard work of the Board and members. The completion of our clubrooms marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the club.

Since stepping into the Treasurer’s role in January 2019, the focus has been:

• Supporting the Building Sub Committee to ensure cashflows have been carefully monitored to allow for working capital and building cost commitments to be delivered

• Preparation of forecasts and budgets for the new financial year • Working on the Building Operations Sub-committee • Leading the evaluation of financial options to fit out the clubrooms for the

forthcoming season

The club has successfully completed all payments for the new clubrooms. I would like to express my thanks and admiration for David, Chris, Steve and Jeff for their incredible commitment, passion and attention to detail which has resulted in the magnificent new building for our Members. I am pleased to report the club has solid working capital after the building costs have been finalised.

As David mentions in his report, we have successfully obtained a grant to assist us to fit out the hospitality areas and are finalising a further grant for the board racking areas. It is important to note that some of these are 1:1 grants which involve the club having to match dollar for dollar, fund the work and then claim the grant funding once key milestones have been achieved. This arrangement requires the club to have adequate cashflows to undertake the work and enter into the contracts with suppliers.

To provide sufficient cashflow and ensure these works are undertaken and completed before the new season, the Board unanimously agreed to obtain a line of credit and enter into a partnership agreement with AWA Bank.

AWA are a full service, community based mutual bank based in Geelong. AWA support community organisations by funding credit at very low interest rates and enter into partnership agreements whereby if members choose to refer their banking needs to AWA, the club benefits through a shared income stream which pays down the line of credit.

This model has been successful implemented by Belmont Cricket Club and Basketball Geelong to establish their infrastructure and facilities. We will be providing further information to members about this partnership arrangement in due course.

With this funding secured, the Building Operations Sub Committee can start to implement the plans to complete the fit out of the clubrooms to a high standard for the new season.

The opportunities for our new club to secure a strong financial position through increased membership, members’ events and member hospitality are exciting and I ask all members to help support the club as we transition into the new building and operating model.

Finally, I would like to thank Anna McDonald who works incredibly hard and shows great passion every day in the multi-faceted role she performs for the club. I would also like to thank my fellow Board members for their support over the last six months and I look forward to a very successful 2019/20 for Ocean Grove SLSC.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT

TO THE MEMBERS OF OCEAN GROVE SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INC. Opinion

We have audited the financial report of Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club Inc (the association), which comprises the balance sheet as at 31 May 2019, the income and expenditure statement for the year then ended, the statement of cashflows, the statement of changes in equity and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the certification by members of the committee on the annual statements giving a true and fair view of the financial position and performance of the association.

In our opinion, the accompanying financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the association as at 31 May 2019 and its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements and the requirements of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (ACNC Act).

Basis for Opinion We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the association in accordance with the ethical requirements of the

Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110: Code of Ethics for Professional

Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution

Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared for the association for the purpose of fulfilling the directors’ financial reporting responsibilities under the ACNC Act. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose.

Other Information

Those charged with governance are responsible for the other information. The other information comprises the information included in the association's annual report for the year ended 31 May 2019 but does not include the financial report and our auditor's report thereon.

Our opinion on the financial report does not cover the other information and accordingly we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon.

In connection with our audit of the financial report, our responsibility is to read the other information and, in doing so, consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial report or our knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated.

If, based on the work we have performed, we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other information, we are required to report that fact. We have nothing to report in this regard.

Responsibilities of the Committee for the Financial Report

The committee is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with the financial reporting requirements of the ACNC Act and for such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial report, the committee is responsible for assessing the association’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters relating to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the committee either intends to liquidate the association or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so. Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of this financial report.

A further description of our responsibilities for the audit of the financial report is located at the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board website at: http://www.auasb.gov.au/Home.aspx. This description forms part of our auditor's report.
