HiWelcome to the Summer edition of S40 Local. The school holidays have started and so has the rain! As always its been a busy few weeks at S40 HQ. In this edition, we have an article giving us an insight into ‘Chesterfi eld in 1915’ one year into World War 1, an introduction to Geocaching, a few of my favourite Peak places, Chatsworth Road Festival news, Retail Awards, an update from Destination Chesterfi eld, news from Bespoke Bartender, a short piece about Wasp Nest Brickworks, fabric creations from InSPIREation 21 and all the usual stuff…Andy Woodward wishes to pass on his thanks to all those people who attended the Britannia Bash."A quick thanks to all those who attended this year’s Britannia Bash: Party in the Park, and an especially big thank you to all those musicians, stall holders and helpers who made it possible. Another great day of music, fun and fundraising which seemed to go down really well with the thousands who attended and raised much needed funds for the Sonia Rayner Family Trust. Will we be back again next year? Watch this space."Also thanks to Kay for pointing out that anyone wanting to see the musical 'London Road' reviewed last month can catch it at the Pomegranate Theatre. ‘London Road’, will be shown on Sunday 13 September at 7.30pm, and Monday 14 September at 11am.Details of the Pomegranate Screenings are at chesterfi eldtheatres.co.uk/pomegranate-screenings and shown each month in S40 Local’s theatre listings.West Studios is hosting the National Citizen Services (NCS) over the holidays and the teenagers involved are developing a campaign in support of breastfeeding. Deynah from the group explained "we are tackling the controversy of breastfeeding in public and the stigma attached to it through our campaign 'Breast Fed Up'. We’ll be tackling social media and producing window signs for on board local businesses to stick in their windows, so Mums can see where they are welcome to breastfeed. Geocaching, if you haven’t heard of it, is where, with the right technology, you can search for hidden stashes. Armed with a set of coordinates and/or tracking device, you search out a hidden container or cache, which might hold ‘goodies’ to trade! A massive digital treasure hunt.My only experience of this was whilst walking with a group of friends we tracked down a couple of geocaches along the way. The kids really enjoyed searching and swapping treasures, but what amazed me was the prolifi c numbers of caches, and how they were hidden in places you’d normally just walk by. Sebastian Swallow is 9 and is interested in geocaching. I went to talk to Sebastian to fi nd out more about it and how to get started and from our spot on Chatsworth Road my phone was highlighting around 20 geocaches in a ½ mile radius of our spot – hidden treasure and challenges so close to home.Sebastian explained “You need a GPS (Global Positioning System) or a phone and you have to sign up to a geocaching website like geocaching.com or opencaching.com. They’re free for basic membership, but if you get hooked you can join up for premium membership and get more involved. From the site you either obtain coordinates for your GPS or download the app to your phone, which you use to pinpoint geocaches.” “Once set up with the technology, to go geocaching you’ll need your device, a pen to write down your visit on the geocache log and some small items to swap for the other items in the geocache, such as moshi monsters, match attack cards, keyrings, party bag toys.” One we visited had the old French francs in which were quite cool!”“The caches vary from basic caches - plastic boxes hidden away, to micro or nano caches more diffi cult to identify and perhaps disguised, so unless you know what you’re doing you might fi nd these a bit tricky.”“There are rules about what you can and can’t leave – no food, liquids, hazardous items, promotional or commercial products or batteries”. Sebastian has even set his own geocache with his Dad “It’s a traditional cache. Before

we could place the cache we had to get permission from the land owner, the National Trust, and explain where the cache was going to be sited – they checked the area and phoned us to let it know it was a good location, but to be careful of the Adders!“We then submitted the cache to the geocaching.com website to get it registered online. Since we’ve put it there we’ve had over 50 people register their visit to the cache online.” For some people the thrill is about being the fi rst to the new cache (ftf apparently, fi rst to fi nd), Sebastian explained “when we set the geocache it was the middle of winter and it went live one evening. By 9pm someone had logged their visit, the next was at 5am the next morning, the second a rather disappointed enthusiast, up so early but not the fi rst to the new cache at Curbar Edge.”For regular geocachers, some caches contain trackables, GPS enabled items that geocachers follow online. If you do go geocaching as a bit of fun, and fi nd a trackable, it’s not geocaching good manners to remove a trackable, unless you’re going to move it to a new cache quickly… the ideal scenario for a trackable is for it to be placed in a new cache, hopefully some distance from the previous cache and to be replaced within 2 weeks. “I was really excited when I realised a trackable had been left in my cache at Curbar Edge, it had originated in Orlando, Florida, where we’d recently visited for a holiday, so we rushed up to my cache, removed it and then took it to Calke Abbey, where we placed it in a new cache.”“As a family we like spending time outdoors and in the countryside and we can combine that with geocaching and I like the challenge of the fi nd.”So if you’re looking for a new hobby or trying to get the kids more interested in the outdoors and keep them entertained on a walk, perhaps do a bit of research and give geocaching a go… Sebastian would recommend it, and you don’t have travel very far to get started!

With the kids being off school, I thought I'd share a few of my favourite places in the Peak District in case you're stuck for

somewhere to visit during the holidays... just don’t all go at once or we'll spoil the peace and quietThe nearest and one of the best is Curbar Edge. You can park at the National Trust (NT) car park and walk along the fabulous edge taking in views the Derwent Valley, and if you look over your shoulder you're treated to views of Chatsworth. If you’re on two wheels you can park at Longshaw estate and cycle to the Wooden Pole, across the road to the White Edge Lodge (a NT holiday cottage), then make for the A625 for a few hundred metres before starting the bridleway climb along Froggatt and Curbar Edge. Descend to the car park and enjoy cake and hot drinks from Jollies before a short climb and descent back… you can extend this route along Baslow Edge if you like, or to add a bit more height, park in Baslow and climb up Bar Road. I know this is more or less a there and back ride but with the views it’s not a bad one!If you’re after a nice mellow stroll then Padley Gorge is a great place to explore. Park at Longshaw Estate (where the car park has recently been improved) and head off across the road and through the woods to the West of The Fox House before turning left and meandering along the side of the stream round Bole Hill before heading for the Grindleford

café for hot chocolate and baked beans on toast. Here you can admire all the rules on the numerous signs that adorn the cafe walls… “don't ask for mushrooms as we don't sell them” etc... You can also watch the trains as the exit Totley Tunnel before making your way back via the Quarry, Granby Wood and the Pond… with possibly another hot chocolate at Longshaw Lodge if it’s still open!Old railway lines make great cycling choices when converted and the Monsal Trail has to be one of the greatest attractions locally. The old tunnels opened up in May 2011 and gradually climbing from Coombs Road, Bakewell to Blackwell Mill at Topley Pike the trail runs for about 7 miles each way. Not far from the start at Bakewell is Hassop Station Café, where you can eat cake, hire a bike or buy a book. The cafe opens later into the evenings in the summer and being so close it’s good to get there out of hours to avoid the busy days on the trail. Take the kids on their bikes… as a rule of thumb and to keep them keen to cycle, restrict their early rides to distances in kilometres no greater than their age! This way they can do it and you won’t have to push them back!Fancy a scramble on the rocks? Just across the road from Longshaw Estate is Mother Cap, Grey Millstone Quarry and Over Owler Tor. A great place to scramble, stroll, enjoy the views and take a picnic. Walk back along Millstone Edge to the car park with great views into Hathersage Valley, sit down on the rocks at the corner of surprise view and soak it up.

I think Castleton, Winnats Pass and Mam Tor is about as close as you can get to a mountainous area within 25 miles of the Spire. I love the Mam Tor ridge in winter covered in snow and lit by winter sun but it’s not too bad in the summer either! Park at the car park just out of Castleton and take a walk up the broken road abandoned in 1979 after numerous attempts to patch it up and keep it open. The cracks and slabs of tarmac show the movement that has taken place in just the 36 years. Once at the top continue up to the ridge then along to Back Tor and Lose Hill before taking the path across the fields to Castleton. This one is a long and tough walk but well worth it for the views over into the Edale Valley.Next up I focus on Ladybower. A 30 minute drive away and you can park up at Fairholmes or Cutthroat Bridge, name taken from a murder that took place there 400 years ago. From the car park a hike up across the moor takes you to a point where four paths converge just below Whinstone Lee Tor and a great view can be taken in of the Upper Derwent Valley and the reservoirs. There are plenty of options for cycling if you park at Fairholmes with a route round the reservoirs with the kids up to Slippery Stones (a fantastic place for a picnic) or the classic MTB route taking in Derwent Moor ( I can remember this being a 12” wide ribbon of single track), Yorkshire Bridge, Aston, Hope Brink, Hope Cross, Rowlee Bridge Farm and back through Lockerbrook… one of my favourite routes in the Peak.A few great spots to experience the best that the Peak District has to offer on foot and on two wheels. Enjoy.

In the next edition (Autumn) we'll be bringing you the schedule of the 100+ events being laid on for the Chatsworth Road Festival, which runs over a shorter period this year from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 October. To whet your appetite here's new of a typical event and we're telling you about a couple of competitions so you can do a bit of preparation!

I beg to differ."Internationally renowned, Manuel Delaflor describes himself as Dreamographer and his photography takes inspiration from a whole range or areas, he edits and manipulates his photograpy (shown above) to stunning effect. During the festival his work will be on display in the Peacock at 412 Chatsworth Road. Be sure to call in for a drink, take a look at his interesting and varied work and perhaps buy one for the walls at home.

On August 4th 1914 a crowd gathered in the market outside Chesterfield Post Office, waiting till after midnight for official news. The hope was that Germany would agree to the British ultimatum and keep its troops out of Belgium: but instead messages arrived confirming that war had been declared and issuing mobilisation orders.“Union Jacks, Union Jacks all the way”Over the next few days soldiers and sailors on leave and men of the reserve headed to the railway stations - there were three in Chesterfield then - and travellers noticed some tearful scenes on the platforms as the men parted from their families. By coincidence Chesterfield's own volunteer territorials unit, the 6th battalion Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) was already in uniform, having been away for its annual two weeks' training at a seaside camp near Scarborough. They were hurriedly brought back, and, after a couple of nights home with their families, assembled on Monday 8th at the Drill Hall by the Ashgate Road allotments. From there the 970 men marched (with officers on horseback) down Saltergate and Glumangate and through the town centre, led by a band playing Tipperary and cheered by the townsfolk, before trudging south for more training. “It was a case of Union Jacks, Union Jacks, all the way; thronged villages of cheering people” wrote one soldier. Nationally and locally the call went out for more volunteers to join the forces, and right through the year men could be seen going to the Drill Hall to sign up, often alone but sometimes in groups actually marching down the centre of the road. Chesterfield men joined all sorts of regiments, and of course the Navy, and during the year recruiting teams from various military units had success in the town. But the men going to the Drill Hall were aiming to join the Sherwoods where they would become members of the new 2/6th battalion. Like the men already in the territorials at the beginning of the war (the 1/6th battalion), they were shipped elsewhere for more training: the 2/6th went to Dunstable, the 1/6th to Harpenden (where they are reported to have drunk the local inns dry).

“I’ll take three, bless’em”This outflow of men was balanced by people coming to town because of the war. One source consisted of war refugees from Belgium, often families with children. These were taken in by local families where possible, rather than putting them in lodging houses. “I'll take three of them, bless 'em.” said one lady; “My husband has gone to the front, and I've got three lads to keep, but I can find room for three poor Belgian children, bless 'em”. Charity events were held to raise funds to support the refugees, with local schools leading the way with regular concerts for the Belgian Distress Fund and arranging collections of clothes and other necessities: kids looking after kids. Two other children arriving in town were Alick and Cecil Seals, the 14 year old twin sons of the manager of the Portland and the Angel Hotels. They’d been apprenticed in a Vienna hotel. When war started they ran away (despite being well treated, as they admitted), and sneaked their way to neutral Switzerland. The biggest influx into town consisted of soldiers from other regiments spending time in Chesterfield as they did their training. One such unit was a detachment of several hundred Lancashire Fusiliers who spent November til April at various billets including the Premier Skating Rink on West Bars and the Ragged School on Markham Road. The Premier rink was a huge building that had been a popular venue before the war, putting on events such as boxing matches and dancing as well as roller skating: it was famous for its (apparently successful) attempts to attract the custom of young ladies with 'confetti fights' and by giving away silk fans. The Lancashire lads were given free skating instructions by the rink’s staff.The Lancashire Fusiliers - they were the 13th battalion - seem to have been genuinely popular with the townsfolk. Some Chesterfield lads even decided to sign up with them, rather than with a local regiment. As the Fusiliers were here over Christmas the town treated all of them to Christmas lunch and concerts, with professional entertainments given by performers from the Hippodrome on Corporation Street.

One reason the Fusiliers were popular was that the men billeted at the Ragged School were found to be sharing their rations with the local children - some of Chesterfield's very poorest waifs and strays - heaping the kids' tins and pans and dishes with hot army food (complete with steamed pudding) even going short themselves in order to help feed the youngsters. The Khaki Button Soldiers of any regiment were popular with many local publicans, their presence making up for the absence of so many local men. It seems that pub goers would practically queue up to buy beer for men in uniform. This practice - 'treating' - came in for criticism from the authorities, and the Archdeacon of Chesterfield called for it to cease: “There is a great amount of mistaken hospitality shown to soldiers in treating them to practically unlimited drink” he said, “the result being that the King's uniform is brought into disgrace.” He backed this up by starting a 'League of the Khaki Button', the idea being that people would wear a Khaki Button (available at a penny each from Everard and Short on the High Street) that showed that ‘the wearer would not stand anyone a drink, nor be stood a drink’. This

suggestion drew national attention and the comment that “.. the first people to wear it will be the very people who don't need to wear it.” Which, frankly, sounds very true. The idea died rapidly.But the Army did see soldiers’ drinking as a problem and used its powers under the new Defence Of the Realm Act (DORA) to limit opening hours. Pubs within three miles of Chesterfield were to shut at 9pm; similar orders applied to Derby, Nottingham, Buxton and Baslow. This order caused consternation among the public and uproar from the pub trade. It was quickly realised that the order applied to licensed premises but not to 'registered' premises (clubs) and people eyed the possibility of applying to join these. And in Holymoorside it was realised that of the three pubs in the village, two were inside the three mile limit, but one (the Old Star) happily was not. But despite protests the order was enforced; the various dodges and exceptions were dealt with by the licensing authorities using their own powers to bring the clubs (and, we presume, the Old Star) into line. Interestingly, shutting the pubs at 9pm caused issues for Chesterfield market. In 1915 the market stalls were used to staying open til


very late – and the clearing out of pubs at 9pm sharp both caused chaos and took away later business. Attempts were made to persuade the Army to allow later pub hours, but these came to nothing, and the corporation instead instituted early closing for the market stall holders … they had to shut by 10pm!Other businesses also stayed open later than you might expect: for example the Post Office opened from 8am to 9pm daily (8:30 to 10am on Sundays) and sent out four deliveries a day (and one on Sunday). Larger shops were open till 7pm on weekdays, and later on Fridays and Saturdays. Likewise public transport ran for long hours – the first tram from Brampton to town left at 4:55am - and finished late in order to get people to and from their shifts. There were fewer private motor vehicles about back then of course. Some vehicles were commandeered by the army – this happened to Brampton Brewery’s motor lorries – and others were offered by their owners as part of the war effort. Chesterfield motor cycle club had over 60 men offering their bikes, and themselves, to act as despatch riders at the front. Not just powered vehicles were in short supply - the army also purchased local horses in large numbers. All of which helped put up the price of transport and therefore of goods. “Famine Prices”High prices and price rises, particularly of food and coal, were a source of tension and real distress, and local farmers and shopkeepers were sometimes accused of profiteering; the trades unions threatened to boycott those traders charging “famine prices”’ for the necessities of life and “thereby bringing starvation to a great many of the working class”. Likewise there was condemnation of workers who wanted higher wages or threatened strike action in a time of national crisis. The loss of men to the forces meant that women were wanted in new areas of employment - the corporation hired its first lady tram conductors in 1915, and there was work in the munitions factories (Markham’s and the Chesterfield Tube Company were two of these). The number of families with men away in the forces prompted the setting up of facilities to help soldiers’ wives. In Glumangate there was the Tipperary Home, which had a nursery, café with subsidised food, library, and entertainments –and there was other support. Though there was also loud disapproval of wives who (supposedly) spent all their ‘separation allowance’ (21 shillings a week for a private’s wife with two children) on alcohol; the Archdeacon called for the authorities to forbid pubs to serve women after 5pm.

“A veritable slaughter of men”Through the year news came in about soldiers being killed and wounded. There was a steady drip of sad messages about the casualties – several local men, week in, week out – but this would occasionally turn into a flood when local units were involved in a big battle. September’s big battle was the Ainse; March’s was Neuve-Chapelle – there were rumours of a disaster affecting the 6th Sherwood Foresters there, but this proved false. But the battle with the biggest local impact in 1915 was Second Ypres in April and May. This was the first major fight involving units made up of local men who’d volunteered after the start of the war, and its psychological impact was strong. The tone of comments coming back from the troops changed from hopeful ones like “I do not think the that the war will last long now” (Private Slack, 2nd Sherwood Foresters) to “..this is no war but a veritable slaughter of men” (Private Hayes, Grenadier Guards). People were realising that it was going to be a long, hard, horrible, slog. The growing butcher’s bill and the increasing viciousness of the war - the first large poison gas attacks happened this year for example - caused a build-up of bad feeling, and when the civilian liner RMS Lusitania was torpedoed there were anti-German riots across the country including in Chesterfield and Whittington Moor. In town a crowd of mostly women attacked the market stall of a Mr Haag, a German pork butcher, terrifying his daughter who was running it, and then laid siege to his shop in Glumangate. Ironically, Mr Haag was a naturalised British citizen of long standing and his son had joined the British army. It was becoming clear that a long war would mean trouble getting enough men to volunteer to replace the losses, and although volunteering was still encouraged, the government was looking at the possibility of conscription. It passed a ‘National Registration Act’ in July 1915, a sort of census that told it exactly who was doing exactly what (women as well as men aged 16 to 65). This was preparation for a more controlled war-centred economy. “Disappointments and Disillusionments”The first anniversary of start of the war, 4th August 1915, was marked in Chesterfield and elsewhere by Patriotic Association meetings but no big demonstrations. “We have suffered many disappointments and disillusionments” said one local commentator. It’s as if they realised that though the past year had been bad, that there was worse, much worse, to come. If that’s what they thought they were right.

It’s pretty much common knowledge that our local authorities and government departments are strapped for cash. So to make a town successful and vibrant, outside investment is required. Changing perceptions of a town takes time, with small incremental changes occurring over a period of time – but some of that work is starting to take effect. Here’s a whistle-stop tour of what’s going on:• A 47% uplift in theatre attendance following a massive investment in the Pomegranate and

Winding Wheel (as covered in S40 Local - April 2015).• The number of working age residents out of work is below the national average at 2.3%.

Youth unemployment has fallen significantly in recent years, however there is still work to be done as the town was above the national average in this area at 5.5% in January.

• Grand Heritage Hotels are investing £400m to develop the 300 acre Birchall Estate, Unstone. Peak Resort will be an integrated leisure, health, sport and education resort, one of the UK’s flagship tourist attractions. A destination not unlike Centre Parcs but with the emphasis on encouraging visitors to use local businesses and services rather than staying within the site - expected to bring 2000 people each week into town.

• New businesses continue to move into Markham Vale.• The first stage of the Waterside residential development is underway with 19 houses

completed and occupied earlier this year• Town Centre development has seen a change in emphasis, with the desire to move from

retail only to town centre living and leisure facilities, this includes plans for the market layout to create more forward facing stalls.

• You may remember reading previously about plans for a Northern Gateway project (redevelopment of the Northern side of the town centre including the ‘donut’ car park and adjacent land). The planning team is going back to the drawing board for this one. Although close to securing investment, recently plans have changed and the project has shifted the emphasis to better support the drive to create a mix of leisure, commercial and retail to inject new energy into the town centre.

• There are also plans for the former magistrates court.• The new sports facilities at Queen’s Park set to deliver in 2016.• Seeing an improvement in numbers of new start up businesses opening in town.• Possible plans to demolish the GPO car park at West Bars• Applications for business to move onto the remaining space at the old Bryan Donkins site.But it’s not all about buildings and developments: gaining positive publicity and encouraging more people to visit Chesterfield is supported by a number of cultural and sporting events: the Cricket Festival, Chesterfield Marathon, the Food and Drink Awards, the Retail Awards, and the Made in Chesterfield Festival. Plus the artwork at Hornsbridge island and the Unity sculpture at the coach station.In other positive news... CASA has been voted one of the country's top five hotels, plans are moving forward to develop Barrow Hill Roundhouse as a visitor attraction and the University of Derby are investing in Chesterfield with a new campus opening in 2016.With investment of over £1b planned in Chesterfield, there’s a lot to be proud of and look forward to.

The private and the public sector working together to promote the town to support the local economy and change perceptions of the town. To do this, we rely on the positive news from the businesses, residents and organisations of the town to keep spreading the word, be that through our website, e-marketing, social media or events.“The businesses that contribute towards the marketing budget delivered by Destination Chesterfield are called Chesterfield Champions and are so much more than ‘just a networking group’. The Champions scheme gives the local business community a voice in how the town is developing, keeps them up-to-date with what’s happening and also provides a forum to get to know each other, support each other and trade locally. And it works well. We have more than 160 Champions with more coming on board every month and they’re making a real difference to how Chesterfield develops as a place to live, work and invest.“Chesterfield Champions were instrumental in driving the improvement to the main gateways to the town. Through collaborative work between the public and private sector, Chesterfield Borough Council went on to secure European funding to deliver the gateway enhancement scheme which included the Sculpture at Hornsbridge and improvements at the Station approach.“Made in Chesterfield is another excellent example of the Champions driving positive change. The manufacturing businesses within the Chesterfield Champions raised concerns about skills and the future supply of labour for their sector so we created the Made in Chesterfield Festival last November. It engaged 400 school children from 28 schools to visit manufacturers and raise awareness of the career opportunities that are available in the manufacturing sector in the town. The festival returns this November and will grow to an entire month of activity.“Alongside this, we deliver a range of projects throughout the year from the Christmas marketing campaign to the Retail and Food and Drink Awards as well as the ongoing positive promotion of the town and inward investment marketing.“It is important people understand we do this for any local business, not just Champions. Bespoke Bartenders set out in 2009 to create the ideal mobile bar service focusing on excellent service and standards. They’ve entertained guests at all manner of events the length and breadth of the country and specialise in ‘fl airing’ - juggling, fl ipping or throwing bottles and cocktail shakers to entertain and prepare the perfect cocktail.

“We’ve had the unit now for a few months and hosted some great events” says Richard, “the whole interior transformed into a pink wonderland for a recent Hen party and some groups of lads looking for a different way to spend an afternoon for a birthday or stag event. We’ve also hosted corporate days where we teach people to fl air with confi dence.”

The Inkerman Park is one of the gems of Chesterfield, hidden amongst the houses of Ashgate. If you don't own a dog or have a child, you may not even know it is there. If its existence comes as a surprise to you then its history is even more intriguing - its previous uses a far cry from the relative oasis it provides today. Its industrial life began as a coal mine and in the 1800s became the Inkerman Brick Company - presumably capitalising on the quantities of clay discovered amongst the coal seams. The Inkerman cottages still have IBC printed on the original bricks. Later in the 19th Century it became the home to Ashgate Pottery Co Ltd.By 1912 though, the Waspnest Brick and Stone Co was firmly established - the entrance being on Old Hall Road. It was owned in partnership by Edward Silcock, Arthur Heath, Arthur Gibbons and Edwin Hattersley. David Hattersley (Edwin's Great Grandson) has shared this fantastic photo, dating back to that time. David points out 'you can just make

out the fact that the lorry tyres are solid, and the headlights look like lamps that have to be lit.' Many trucks would still have used solid tyres until the Second World War and electric headlamps were not uncommon in the 1920s, suggesting the photo would probably have been taken in the 1910s or 1920s.What I find even more surprising is that just next door to the Waspnest Brickworks was the Inkerman Pool, a swimming pool created when the Inkerman Colliery workings closed down. Once home to the Chesterfield Swimming club, it even included changing huts and a diving board. However, the pool was said to be very deep, and became the scene of a number of unfortunate tragedies. The pool was finally filled in during the 1970s and became the Inkerman Park we know and enjoy today.

InSPIREation 21 – Twenty one is not the average age of the members, it’s the number of people in the group and I’m meeting Joan Holmes and Marie Heathcote to find out more about these 21 textile fanatics.

“There were four of us initially” explains Marie, “We were all attending a City and Guilds textile course at Clown College and on completion of the course wanted to continue and build on the skills we had acquired. When we failed to find a suitable group which met in the daytime we decided to form one ourselves, hence the birth of InSPIREation 21”.

The group started in 2001 meeting in a room above the Market Hall. Numbers grew quickly but they stopped accepting members once they had reached 21. “It was important that we were a manageable group so we stuck at that number” says Marie,” and we have people on the waiting list today” she adds. The members are mainly retired and come from a variety of backgrounds, including commerce, nursing, catering and teaching which includes art and textiles, but all care passionately about what they are doing. They attend workshops and spread the learning between themselves and arrange trips to exhibitions and places of interest which support their work.

The group love to tackle any textile/art based project including embroidery, quilting, felting, book binding and much more. Twice a year they invite a national/international textile artist to tutor a workshop. “We have looked at a great selection of new skills” says Joan, “dying, flower pounding, rug making, to name a few and acquired knowledge of an unbelievable amount of stitches.

In August the group will put on their bi-annual exhibition at the Cromford Mills, Derbyshire where they are showing their latest works between 15th and 27th August. This year's theme has been to look at work by other artists and use inspiration from them, inspiration coming from Angie Lewin, Monet, through to work by young grand-daughters so the results will, no doubt, vary massively, a mixture of textile pieces. Once over, the group will be selecting a subject for the next exhibition and work will start towards their pieces.

The group is made up of members from across the area local and further afield including Doncaster. Nottingham, and Eckington. “ We are a very friendly group” explains Joan. “Like any other group we enjoy a Christmas meal but we take ours in June or July, we arrange the occasional weekend workshop away and we are very supportive of each other, leaning on each other when needed.

The ManorCraig's Alpine Fundraising ClimbsThis July local businessmen Craig Lynch (owner of The Manor), Keiron Salt, Kevin Raine and Martin Grayson tackled the three toughest Alpine Climbs in three days during the climax of the Tour de France to raise money. Their charity this year has been nominated by the widow of their old friend Dave Robinson of Brampton who passed away suddenly last year.

This follows successful challenges to raise money in previous years for local charities; including over £2000 for Ashgate Hospice in 2013 by climbing the notorious Mount Ventoux twice in 24 hours. This year's beneficiary is Ashgate Croft School. The four friends are setting out to attempt the Col de Madeleine, Col de Galibier and Alpe d'Huez on consecutive days, culminating on Saturday 25 July, the same day the leaders of this year's Tour de France attack the notorious climb. The main fundraising effort took place at this year's Annual Hogroast Music Festival at The Manor@Brampton - an event that has been raising funds for local charities for the last 11 years!"This will be a very special fundraising ride for me as Dave was a personal friend and would have probably insisted on joining us wearing a dress!" Top Internationally Renowned Photographer Coming To Chesterfield

David Noton is an internationally renowned landscape and travel photographer with a well-deserved reputation for the quality of his images and his fun take on his travels to capture those pictures. David Noton will be presenting his "Chasing the Light" roadshow at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfi eld on Thursday the 10th of September. This is an opportunity not to be missed if you like stunning photography from across the world. David uses the latest technology to present his images from his international travels across the globe, including Chile, Iceland, Vietnam and Italy to name but a few.

David's passion for the places and people he visits is clearly evident as he enthusiastically and humorously transports the audience at break neck speed around the world. As well as showing his

outstanding pictures he also explains some of the technical aspects and the planning needed to be in the right place, at the right time, with the right equipment.

David is an ambassador for some of the top photographic companies and has been commissioned by the National Trust and been recognised by the BBC.The event is being promoted by the Chesterfi eld Photographic Society, with help from Dents Photographic. Raising funds for Ashgate Hospice and the Air Ambulance.

Chatsworth Road Medical CentrePatient Participation Group (PPG)

The PPG represents patients and performs a number of roles. They meet monthly and work with the practice to maintain and improve services to patients, conducting frequent surveys of patients to gain feedback.

The group has become more important as we navigate the changes within the Health Service e.g. changing needs and expectations, changes within society and the impact of new technologies.

The introduction of longer surgery hours will also affect the practice.

We monitor standards as well as helping agree how to provide the service for the future. To support our understanding we attend external consultation meetings and drive internal project work to address issues identifi ed by patients.

We have recently developed a 'Make the Most of Your Appointment' leafl et to help patients get more benefi t from the face to face time they spend with their GP.

This encourages patients to think about what they want the outcome of their appointment to be and how best to articulate symptoms to the doctor.

Garden Tips

The Summer holidays are here, plenty of time to get in the Garden, or more importantly, plenty of jobs that your kids or Grandchildren will love to do while you sit back with a glass of Pimms, not that we're endorsing that of course... Other beverages are available.

1. If it's dry keep ponds and water features topped up, and clear out weeds or any other over exuberant growth.

2. Keep dead-heading ornamental plants to extend the flowering season – this can put a bit of a strain on the plant so keep it fed and watered. If the seed heads have ornamental value, towards the end of summer (depending on its flowering season) leave some of the flowers to fade and the seed-heads to ripen.

3. Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, which will give time for some new growth before it slows down in autumn.

4. Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter.

5. If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and is then dug in to improve its fertility (but don’t let it set seed).

6. If you want to save a seed of a particular plant, choose a good specimen. Transition Chesterfield is holding a Seed Saving workshop at the Saints Parish Centre (St Mary's Gate, near the church) 7-9pm on the 17 August; this is free to attend and you don't need to book.

7. Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted, or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and keep watered.

8. Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year when you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year's seeding is seven years weeding'...

9. Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-to-toe in black.

10. If you have surfeits of fruit or veg, from September until December Transition Chesterfield will be holding monthly produce swaps at their regular Green Drinks - bring anything edible you’ve grown or made yourself and trade it with others. The location is the White Swan, St Mary’s Gate (opposite the church), from about 7:30pm onwards.

As well as the events mentioned above, Transition Chesterfield are holding a series of gardening talks and workshops on the third Monday of each month, at The Saints Parish Centre.
