Place an elastic band (provided) through the hole on the entry tag and then place over the neck of vase or in front of bowls, baskets or boxes, etc. Only tags supplied by VRS will be accepted.

Exhibitor Grown All roses and flowers must have been grown outdoors by the Exhibitor for at least 2 months, except where otherwise stated. Greenery may be purchased where specified in the schedule.

Definitions

Bud: One bud, sepals down, showing colour and not more than a quarter open.

Exhibition Bloom: One classic hybrid tea-type bloom with no side buds, ½ to ¾ open, having a high pointed centre, of triangular appearance when viewed from the side, where the petals unfold symmetrically and having a circular outline when looking down at the bloom along the axis of the stem.

Decorative Bloom: A bloom that does not have the classic high pointed centre form of an exhibition bloom. It may have a flat, cupped, quartered or even a sunken centre and instead of a symmetrical spiral of petals, the bloom may display a more “informal” configuration of ruffled petals. Blooms can be single, semi double or full petalled.

Stem: One single stem with (a) one bloom, (b) one bloom with buds, or (c) multiple blooms is called a stem.

Spray: A stem with a cluster of blooms with 2 or more flowers open. All varieties of roses can grow this way. Sprays that typically have all blooms open to the same stage and sprays that typically have blooms in all stages of openness (buds opening and showing colour, or buds still closed) will not be penalized for lack of bloom sequence.

Side Buds on Exhibit: All class sections specify whether stems can have side buds or not. Side buds are permitted on single (4-8 petal) and semi-double (9-16 petal) hybrid teas and minis, all floribundas, polyanthas, grandifloras, shrubs, large flowered climbers and all classes of old garden roses (OGR), unless otherwise specified. Disproportionate side buds may be removed to make a better exhibit.

Disbudded Exhibits (side buds removed): All class sections specify whether stems must have side buds removed or not. Disbudding scars will be penalized by the degree of distraction from the beauty of the specimen.

Stem-on-Stem: All roses may be exhibited with the stem holding a bloom still attached to a main cane. There is NO penalty when OGRs, shrubs and Austins are shown this way with the stem-on-stem break either above or below the lip of the vase. All other roses (hybrid teas, grandifloras, etc.) may be shown stem-on-stem but the secondary stem must not be visible and must be below the top of the vase. If not, the entry will be penalized, but not disqualified.

Petal Count: Single Bloom: a rose with 4 to 8 petals Semi-Double Bloom: a rose with 9 to 16 petals Double Bloom: a rose with 17 to 25 petals Full Bloom: a rose with 26 to 40 petals Very Full Bloom: a rose with 41+ petals

Judging General Guidelines Remember that judging takes place starting at 9:30 a.m. and that a 1st place winner may not be perfect three

hours after judging but would have been so at the time of judging.

An exhibition rose is considered at its most perfect when the bloom is ½ to ¾ open, with sufficient petals symmetrically arranged in an attractive circle towards a high centre. Buds and roses just beginning to open does not qualify as blooms.

Judges will know whether a particular bloom is true to type in colour, form and foliage, and will not discriminate between varieties because of personal prejudice.

Judges will disqualify themselves from judging a class they have entered. They are encouraged to exhibit in the Show.

The decision of the Judges is final.

Rules for Disqualification

1. Exhibit placed in wrong class (however, we will attempt to re-place before judging)

2. Any foreign substance (e.g. leaf shine) applied to any part of the exhibit

3. Not according to schedule (e.g. side bud(s) on a rose that should be exhibited disbudded)

4. Exhibitor’s name in wrong place, missing from entry tag or incorrect tag used

5. Wedging material used other than that supplied by VRS

Judges’ Scoring System

All exhibits will be judged on the following Canadian point scale: Total = 100 points

Form = 25 points

Form refers to the shape of the bloom, the configuration of the petals, the degree of openness of the bloom and its symmetry.

Colour = 25 points

Colour should be bright and display the full depth of the true seasonal colour of the variety with no streaks, blotches, fading or blueing.

Substance = 20 points

Substance is defined as the freshness of the bloom. The petals display firmness, crispness and texture with no appearance of discolouration or loss of sheen. The exhibit is fresh, due to the amount of moisture and starch in the petals, leaves and stem.

Stem, Foliage and Balance = 20 points

Stems should be straight and in proportion to the size of the bloom, with intact prickles and be sufficiently strong enough to support the bloom or flower head. The foliage should be clean and healthy, be free of unwanted residue and should not have any disbudding stubs or immature growths coming from a leaf axil. Balance refers to the exhibit as a whole, the relative size of the bloom to stem and foliage.

Size = 10 points

Size refers to the actual dimensions of the bloom. The bloom should be the typical size for the specific variety. In Multiple stem exhibits the blooms should be uniform in size and stage of development

Exhibitor’s Rules and Regulations

The current ARS Handbook for Selecting Roses will be used for determining colour and rose type. If the rose is not listed in the ARS Handbook, then Modern Roses 12, the Combined Rose List, the Official List of Approved Exhibition Names, or the ARS website for last minute registration or classification changes will be used.

1. All roses must be entered in the correct colour class as stated in the above mentioned publications.

2. Incorrect naming of any roses will NOT result in disqualification although it should not be encouraged.

3. Entry Tags must be used for all exhibits including Mini entries, Bowls, Baskets and Boxes. Tags will be supplied by the VRS.

4. Each Exhibitor may enter an unlimited number of entries in all classes, except where otherwise noted. The same varieties may be used in Bowls, Baskets or Box classes but the entries must not be identical.

5. All roses entered in the Show (except Classes 84 and 85) must have been registered with the ARS or the country of origin and given an AEN (Approved Exhibition Name).

6. A Novice is a person who has never won more than three (3) first place awards in any class in any rose show.

7. All vases, containers, bowls, mini boxes, palettes, milk cans, show boxes and picture frames will be supplied by the VRS, unless otherwise stated. On Show day, they will be located inside the Floral Hall and will be marked with letters corresponding to the type of “vase” that we suggest using for each class (you can change vase size to fit your size of stem(s), etc.) For Garden Bouquets, you may use your own container (no oasis, just water – be sure to pick up your container at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday) or you may use the VRS’s containers – no points will be given for the container.

Bowls, baskets, boxes and palettes may be prepared at home. Exhibitors may USE THEIR OWN CONTAINERS or borrow them at our May or June VRS meetings or they will also be available the morning of the Show. Borrowed items may not be taken home after the Show.

Garden Bouquets: Your vase or a VRS vase with water (no oasis) and roses and your home-grown annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs, etc. (greenery may be purchased) – will be judged on the quality of roses, freshness and effective use of colour and overall appeal of the bouquet. No points will be given for the container.

8. Wire supports may be used in the box classes, but in no other classes. Only Styrofoam filler supplied by VRS may be used as wedges in vases and should not protrude above the rim.
