ThelargestshareofaMichiganDepartmentofEducation(MDE)$10milliongrantwill
gotoWashtenawIntermediateSchoolDistrict(WISD)tosupporttheunificationofWillowRunCommunitySchoolsandYpsilantiPublicSchools.TheMDEgrantisreservedforschooldistrictsinMichiganthathaveconsolidatedservicesorfullymerged.Notificationofthe$6.5milliongrantawardcamelateFriday,February1,2013andWISDSuperintendentScottMenzelwaselatedwiththenews.“Tosaywe’reexcitedisanunderstatement,”Menzelsaid.“Thereareanexorbitantamountofexpensesassociatedwithmergingtwodistricts.Curriculum,technologyandoperatingsystemswillhavetobeauditedandaligned;inventoriesandanalysisofbestpracticeswillbeconductedandthesheermanpowerofclosingdowntwoseparatedistrictsandlaunchinganewoneislaborintensive.”
Thestatehasindicatedthatthegrantisbeingawardedwithconditionsandthosedetailswillbefinalizedintheweeksahead.Inthemeantime,Menzelsaidaburdenhasbeenlifted.“Wecanforgeaheadwithconfidence,notwonderingifthereisfundingtoperformthethousandsofdetailsthatareinvolvedwiththismagnitudeofwork,”Menzelsaid.“We’regratefultoStateSuperintendentMichaelFlanaganforstandingbyusanddeliveringonthecommitmenttoseeusthroughthisphaseofdevelopmentandlaunch.”MenzelalsoacknowledgedthesupportofStateRepresentativesDavidRutledgeandBill
RogersandthenumerouseducationalpartnersandYpsilantiareacommunitymemberswhohaveandarevolunteeringtobringconsolidationtofruition.“Ypsilantiisacan-docommunityandwehavewitnessedaresilienceandpassionthatisremarkable,”Menzelsaid.“Theawardingofthisgrantisaconfirmationthatadynamicandextraordinaryeducationalsystemwillbebuilt.”
