QUESTION OF THE WEEK Question for Children: What can you do for your family to show them Jesus’ love and care?

Question for Adults: In what way has the example of Christian marriage (your own or that of another couple) helped you understand the relationship be-tween Christ and his church?

Mission Statement

The Catholic Community of St. Timothy serves the areas of Norwood, Walpole, Westwood, and all who come to our door. The seren-ity of our waterfront church property is a natural reminder of all the gifts that God has given us. It is our vision, as a Eucharistic people, to come to know and love Christ, to proclaim his teachings through word and deed, to wor-ship together and to minister to one another. We strive to form a supportive and generous faith-filled community. We seek to bear witness to Christ's presence and compassion to all by our service to our sisters and brothers. Jesus himself, gives the mission to us. “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20)

August 26~ Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Some who heard Jesus’ teaching returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. The demands of being a follower of Christ were too much for them. When you are tired and being a disciple of Jesus feels too hard, how will you respond to the question Jesus asks in today’s gospel, “Do you also want to leave?” Pray for the grace to respond like Peter did, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We are convinced that you are the holy one of God.”

An early deadline for submissions to our bulletin often makes timely response to current events difficult. This is one of those situations. Last week we heard and read Cardinal Sean’s statement on the Pennsylvania Grand Jury’s report which followed on the heels of the accusations concerning Cardinal McCarrick. All of this news returns me to 2002 and the revelations of the abuse that had occurred in Boston. That experience was a sad, de-pressing and terrible moment for me as a priest, pastor and Catholic. Recalling it just brings back all the anger, shame and disappointment that I felt and still harbor. It doesn’t take much to bring it all back to the surface. So, I can only imagine what pain survivors experience and what all of you are feeling as you hear and read the news each day. As a person of faith, in spite of what I may be feeling at any given moment, I know that I should not lose hope. My faith is in God and his Son Jesus Christ—not in any cardinal, bishop or priest. The church is an institution that is divine and human, and the human part can often let us down. But God is always faithful even when we humans fail. So, that gives me reason to continue to have hope. Today’s Gospel tells us: “Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.” Jesus, his church and we have all been betrayed and it can shake our faith. We are as shocked today as were the followers of Jesus when they were faced with the scandal of the cross. But those disciples who persevered would expe-rience the faithfulness of God who never abandoned them, God who was always with them in the darkness, leading them to the light of new life. In the first reading Joshua challenges the people who have wandered away from God and forgotten God’s goodness to them. The people respond: "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD… He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among the peoples through whom we passed. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God." Anger, shame, sadness, disappointment at what has happened can shake our faith in the church and its leaders. But I know that God is always faithful. The Eucharist reminds me that Jesus died for our sins—not just the sins of the past, but the sins that we continue to commit today through human weakness. As disciples of the Lord we are constantly called to conversion and new life. That gives me reason to have hope, that together, walking in the light of Christ, every tomorrow is filled with the possibility of new life, a better life with God and in God’s church. And, like the disciples in today’s Gospel we can respond to Jesus: "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Save the Date: Market of Hope — Saturday, October 20

On Saturday, October 20, St. Timothy Parish, in conjunction with the Market of Hope, will once again be hosting a market day featuring handmade goods from all over the world. Over the past two years, the event was a great success on so many levels, that we want to continue this tradition. And we need your help! Market of Hope partners with organizations and social enterprises that minister to the needs of the world’s most vulnerable, and gives them opportunity to be empowered–to lift themselves out of poverty and economic dependency. Market of Hope events support families and communities in over 20 different countries by providing income, education, training, financial investment and emotional restoration to victims of human trafficking and economic slavery. By purchasing goods at Market of Hope we turn our shopping into an avenue for empowerment and hope. It allows us as Catholics to answer God’s call to respond to the pain and hard-ship of our brothers and sisters around the world. All parishioners can help by marking October 20th on your calendars and making it a point to attend the market and to invite friends to come along. The products for sale are perfect for gift-giving, whether for a birthday, an anniversary, or Christmas. Please plan to attend! Your purchases will have a double impact by supporting the economic success of artisans in developing countries!

In addition, the Assistant Coordi-nator would meet with the Coordinator for 1-2 hours on Fri-days to review the needs and responsibilities for the Sun/Mon/Tues classes. Friday hours could be flexible if scheduled be-tween the hours of 9am and 3pm.
