For many people around the world, the Netherlands is just a tiny patch on the map
somewhere in Western Europe. Canadians know better.
The pivotal role that Canadian soldiers played in the liberation of the Netherlands 65 years ago and
the hospitality that the Dutch ROYAL FAMILY received in Ottawa during the dark years of
the Second World War have given Canada and the Netherlands a shared history.
Their friendship has evolved and grown stronger over the years.
The two countries have discovered that they are like-minded nations,
sharing the same values and a vision for the future.
Presented by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in partnership with
the National Capital Commission (NCC).
Pour beaucoup de gens dans le monde, les Pays-Bas ne sont qu’une minuscule tache sur la carte
de l’Europe de l’Ouest. Les Canadiens sont toutefois mieux renseignés.
Le rôle déterminant qu’ont joué les soldats canadiens dans la libération des Pays-Bas il y a 65 ans
et l’accueil qu’Ottawa a réservé à la FAMILLE ROYALE aux heures sombres
de la Seconde Guerre mondiale ont fait en sorte que l’histoire des deux pays s’est entrecroisée.
Leur amitié a grandi et s’est consolidée depuis. Partageant les mêmes valeurs et envisageant l’avenir
de la même façon, le Canada et les Pays-Bas voient le monde de façon similaire.

New Future Dutch immigration to Canada peaked in the late 1940s and 1950s. The well-known ships of the Holland America Line carried
numerous immigrants from Rotterdam harbour to Halifax. This Dutch couple is eagerly waiting to arrive in their new home
country. Today, almost one million people of Dutch descent live in Canada.

Enterprising and Energetic Many Dutch immigrants found jobs in the agricultural sector, working on farms around London, Ontario. Prepared to
preserve their Dutch roots, these new immigrants quickly adapted to their new country and became respected members
of their communities.
Dynamiques et déterminés De nombreux immigrants néerlandais ont trouvé du travail dans les fermes aux environs de London, en Ontario, et se sont
lancés dans l’agriculture. Quoique désireux de conserver leurs racines, ces immigrants se sont rapidement intégrés dans leur
nouveau pays et sont devenus des membres respectés de leur collectivité.

Canada’s Princess Princess Margriet, who was born at Ottawa’s Civic Hospital in 1943, is considered “Canada’s Princess.” Together with her
husband, Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven, she has maintained a warm, personal relationship with Canadian veterans, who
had helped to liberate her country.
La princesse canadienneNée à l’Hôpital d’Ottawa en 1943, la princesse Margriet est considérée comme la « princesse canadienne ».
Comme son mari, monsieur Pieter van Vollenhoven, elle entretient de chaleureux liens personnels avec les vétérans qui ont

Safe in CanadaCrown Princess Juliana fled to Ottawa in 1940, where she lived safely with her children until the end of
the Second World War. Princess Margriet, seen here with her mother during a summer outing, was born
in Canada on January 19, 1943.

children in Amersfoort in 1945 speaks volumes.

Symbol of FriendshipTulips have become a symbol of friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. Since Princess Juliana’s first
gift of tulips as a token of her gratitude after the Second World War, over one million tulips bloom
in Canada’s Capital each year.
Un symbole d’amitiéLes tulipes sont devenues un symbole d’amitié entre le Canada et les Pays-Bas. Depuis que la princesse Juliana
a fait un premier don de tulipes à titre de remerciement après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, plus d’un million

Bombardier in AmsterdamFor the Dutch, logistics and transportation are second nature. Innovative expertise is shared between the Netherlands
and Canada. Canadian Bombardier light rail trains, like this Sprinter train at Amsterdam Sloterdijk station,
are in use in many Dutch cities.

Practically Born on BikesThe Netherlands is the only European country with more bicycles than people. Children with their stuffed toys enjoy
riding in their “Cabby” carrier bike — a popular alternative to the traditional cargo bike.

Bike-Friendly NationsCanadian cities seek Dutch expertise on bike safety and infrastructure. Dutch signposts, known as mushrooms, now grace the
Canadian landscape and show cyclists the way in a number of cities.
This one is located in Ottawa, close to Lansdowne Park.

We Call It Ice Hockey Although the Netherlands is known as a speed skating nation, the Dutch do play hockey. Dutch hockey teams often
benefit from the skills of talented Canadian coaches and players, such as Andrew Schembri, who now plays
with the Eindhoven Kemphanen hockey team.

The Oosterschelde Dam in the Dutch province of Zeeland protects a large area of the Netherlands — which is situated
below sea level — from flooding.

Sharing InnovationDutch engineering technology has helped to build Canadian bridges. Each section of the Confederation Bridge, which links
Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, was put into place by a one-of-a-kind Dutch crane.
