Educational Loan and Scholarship Funds - FAQs

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is privileged to award several endowedscholarships. If eligible, you are invited and encouraged to apply if you are currently

enrolled or planning to enroll as a graduate student and have financial need.

What is the deadline to apply for the scholarships?Completed applications for all of the scholarship funds must be postmarked no later than May 15th.Letters of recommendation and transcripts must be opened and copied, and included with the application;NO mailed separately. !n ori"inal of the transcript and letter of recommendation must be included withthe application.

How many scholarships may I apply for?#f eli"ible, you may apply for all scholarship loans$"rants.

Can I submit one application for all scholarships?

#f you are a medical student, you may submit one combined %trickler$&einman application for thesescholarships. Otherwise, you must apply for each of the scholarships separately.

Do I have to be currently enrolled to apply for a scholarship?

No, but you will need to be enrolled by the time the disbursements are made in %eptember if chosen as arecipient.

I received a scholarship last year. Must I reapply or will my award be renewed automatically?

'rior recipients are requiredto reapply as their situations may ha(e chan"ed. 'lease take note of thematerials re)uired for this year*s application, as they may differ from last year.

Who should I ask to ive me a letter of recommendation?

#t is desirable to obtain only +1 letter of recommendation from an instructor +if you are a currentlyenrolled student or anyone +e-cludin" family members who can attest to your commitment to your

profession, character and financial need. he letter must be written durin" the year in which you areapplyin" for a scholarship.

If I am applyin for multiple scholarships! does my letter of recommendation need to be addressed

to each scholarship separately? #f you are a medical student, the letter of recommendation can beaddressed to the %trickler and &einman &und committees to"ether. Other than that, the letter ofrecommendation should be addressed to each scholarship committee separately.

When and how will I be notified if I am selected as a scholarship recipient?

enerally, you will be notified about the status of your application sometime in !u"ust. !pplicants arenotified by mailwhether or not they ha(e been selected as a scholarship recipient. /e are not able to

pro(ide this information o(er the phone or (ia e0mail. herefore, it is important that your address bele"ible and that you indicate on your application which address should be used to send correspondences.

Who reviews my scholarship application?

!pplications are re(iewed by separate scholarship committees comprised of community members and insome cases &ederation staff, who collaborate on the selection of the recipients.

If I apply for multiple scholarships! are all my applications reviewed by the same committee?

No, there is a separate committee that re(iews applications for each scholarship.

Why are so many copies of the applications and materials required?

ou are re)uired to submit the specified number of copied sets to help e-pedite the process of forwardin"them to the committee.

Can I send an unofficial transcript in with my application?

es. ou are re)uired to include one +1 ori"inal of your official or unofficial transcript with yourapplication and to make copies for the sets2you only need to include one +1 ori"inal.

What are the amounts of the scholarships?

What can I use the scholarship money for?

#nterest0free loans that are awarded from the "lbert #trickler Memorial $undand the #amuel $.and #ara %. $einman $undare made payable to the recipient and may be used for any educationale-penses which include tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, transportation and personale-penses.

Ida $oreman $leisher7 he awards are paid directly to your colle"e$uni(ersity to be applied to yourtuition and fees for the current academic year.

If my tuition is already paid for! can I receive the rant money directly? &$leisher "pplicants 'nly(

No, if chosen as a recipient and your tuition is already paid for because of other awards you may ha(ebeen "ranted, the colle"e$uni(ersity is re)uired to return the funds.

Will interest ever accrue on the loans I receive from the "lbert #trickler Memorial $und and the

#amuel $. and #ara %. $einman $und? No, the loans awarded will ne(er ha(e interest accruin" on them.

When will the funds be distributed if I am awarded a scholarship?

8ecipients of the interest0free loans awarded throu"h the "lbert #trickler Memorial $undand$or#amuel $. and #ara %. $einman $und will be mailed a promissory note to be si"ned and returnedobli"atin" them to be"in repayment of their interest0free loan +5 years after the date of their"raduation. 8ecipients must also ha(e their school send the committee a letter (erifyin" theirenrollment for the current academic school year. /e will disburse loan checks after %eptember 1stonly upon receipt of )'*Hthe promissory note and letter from your colle"e or uni(ersity. Loanchecks will be mailed, payable in your name, to the preferred address noted on your application.
