PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association

- 4 -

The years progress far too quickly and it only seems a short while ago that I was writing very last year's report. To note some key successes over the season:

Our weekly competition continued to be successful. A huge thanks to Competition Manager, Martin Mood and our Vice President, Chris Hewitt, who again looked after grounds and infrastructure.

Our U10 Development Squad continues to provide appropriate development opportunities matched to age, while our Shield and Presidents' representative teams represented the association with distinction.

This season also saw our girls representative program expand, with an U15 Margaret Peden side joining our U13 Mollie Dive Shield side. Girls’ cricket, at club and representative level, remains a core focus for the SSJCA, something we hope more Clubs will support.

Our appreciation is extended again to our commercial partners Kookaburra Sports, Real Play, Kingsgrove Sports and the Sydney Sixers for their continued generous support, together with Huxbury Print Group. We look forward to working with them gain over the seasons ahead.

A huge thanks to the local Umpires Association and their member umpires for their time and dedication week by week, over our competition and representative commitments.

Sutherland Shire Council remains a solid supporter of our game and the issues we face with grounds and improvements. Our relationship with Council is as strong as ever and we look forward to working with them on the critical issues facing the provision of infrastructure going forward.

Our relationship with Sutherland DCC continues to grow, working together will be important in building our game locally. Stay tuned for further initiatives over the coming season.

We appreciate the continued support of Cricket NSW and the NSWDCA, and for their increasing engagement in grass roots issues.

Congratulations to Caringbah Sports Cricket Club on taking out the Club Championship – a wonderful end to a great season for that club’s officials, coaches, players and volunteers. To our premiership winning teams and individual award winners, congratulations on your achievements. To our representative coaches and managers, in particular our 'independents', thank you for your time and effort. To all our players and team officials across the association, thank you for participating in and supporting our great competition. And as always, a huge thank you to our vast network of volunteers, the backbone of each club and team. Congratulations to Bradley Simpson (Engadine 16A) on his selection in the Australian Under 16 squad. This is a great reward for his hard work, and is a great tribute to the quality of his club, his coaches and the competition provided here in Sutherland Shire. To my fellow members of our SSJCA Committee, thank you – yet again. We have been fortunate indeed with the people we have had around the table. I've said before that every year the challenges and complexities in administering our game increases, however it is fair to say that this is now an exponential increase year on year. Your Committee requires a degree of commitment and professionalism from its members that in many instances seems to go unnoticed. Complex administrative, legal, financial as well as cricket related issues are becoming more the norm. Your Committee are all volunteers, but not just comprised of those who were the last ones with their hands in the air - we have been fortunate to have people with strong business and cricket knowledge. This will be my last report as President as I'm stepping back at the end of this season. I look forward to working with a new President and with next year's Committee. I've been very fortunate to work - and make many friends - with some outstanding individuals at both Club and SSJCA level. This 'generation' of Committee has made some great steps forward:

The advancement of girls’ cricket, at club and representative level.

Cricket format modifications to provide pathway options for players across all grades.

Progressive regulation changes to encourage greater participation levels.

A more rigorous approach and dedicated funding to infrastructure development and improvement.

Settled protocols around representative teams - incl coach & team selection, grounds, clothing, training.

Stronger relationships with CNSW, across game development and representative cricket.

Deeper interaction with the Grade Club, player pathways and accessing coaching resources.

A better partnership with Council across grounds development and interaction across sports.

Developed policies and positions across key elements, enhancing transparency and objectivity.

Refined administrative processes, including enhanced budgeting and finance functions. I thank each Club for their support over the years. Going forward, the relationship between Club and Association will be critical with what's appearing on the horizon. A snapshot of critical matters for coming seasons:

Remaining innovative and modern in our approach to our game - whether that be in how we administer the SSJCA, in our focus on being current across our policies and practices, in our methods of facilities changes where needed or simply in being open to new ideas - in competing for junior sporting headcount in the Shire.

Progression of modified formats to assure player attraction and retention, working with Cricket Australia and CNSW on the rollout of standardised cricket formats.

Negotiating the incorporation of key functionality from Cricket Online to MyCricket and overseeing the transition to MyCricket to ensure long term support.

Assuring local infrastructure - numbers and quality of grounds, pitch replacements, suitability of facilities - providing consistent funding and working with Council and our peer sports.

Entrenching our relationships with each of Council, CNSW and the Grade Club - collegiate partnerships with these key stakeholders is paramount.

Remaining vigilant in the prevention, but if necessary sanctioning, of inappropriate behaviour - providing a safe, enjoyable, inclusive environment, where on and off field (players, officials and parents) conduct is within the Spirit of Cricket.

However, perhaps the biggest challenge will be combating ‘volunteer fatigue’. Increasing time demands, administrative complexities, and an increasing adversarial approach to issues take their toll. Without volunteers there is no local game – for anyone. We all need to refocus on our “goodwill” towards our volunteers and work to create an environment which fosters their involvement, not chase them out of the game. It's been a privilege to contribute to our great game. Please enjoy your off season and here's to season 2017-18!! Roy Amos President

CRICKETER OF THE YEAR – JOSHUA MOORS

John Woodhouse Memorial Trophy On behalf of the Cronulla Seagulls Cricket Club, it is a pleasure to be able to write some words about the SSJCA Cricketer of the Year, Joshua (Josh) Moors.

Josh had a fantastic 2016/17 season, both individually and captaining the Cronulla Seagulls 16A premiership winning side, which was a great way to finish up his junior cricket years. This was the third season in a row where Josh had captained a premiership winning side.

Individually, Josh was the dominant and most outstanding cricketer of this year’s 16A competition, scoring 350 runs at an average of 58.33 and taking 24 wickets at an average 8.88 (not including final). This included a highest score of 160 not out, two other scores over 50 and a best bowling performance of 6 for 8. In addition Josh finished with a match winning 5 for 14 in the final. This was a remarkable effort as Josh was not available to play in all games, and also had to leave early most weeks to play in the Sydney Grade Cricket Competition for the St George where he was selected in their fourth and fifth grade sides for the entire season.

Josh commenced his junior cricket as a batsman and wicketkeeper, consistently up there with the competition’s leading run scorers each season and was easily the competition’s best wicketkeeper season in and season out. At the end of the 2015/16 season Josh was identified by the Pathway Coaches at Cricket NSW as a leg spin bowler with potential and throughout the off season he worked on this craft with these coaches. The result of this work is there for all to see with Josh finishing the leading wicket taker in the 16A competition with 29 wickets, including the final.

I have coached Josh at club level since he commenced playing in the 2009/10 season with the Gymea Bay Cricket Club. Over the years I have seen Josh develop into the fine young cricketer that he is today. Josh has a love for the game and is a real competitor with a strong will to succeed. He works hard on his skills and through this hard work and dedication he has been able to achieve the success that he has had in his junior cricket years. I will watch Josh with much interest in the coming years for his progression up the Sydney Grade Cricket ranks and perhaps beyond.

Congratulations Josh on receiving this award and all of your achievements in your junior cricket years. It was a pleasure to be part of it and I wish all the best for your continued enjoyment of this great game and whatever success that you achieve in the future.

HARRISON GOLDSMITH

‘Goldy’ joined GBCC in the 2013-14 season. During that season he earned himself a place in the Sutherland Shield side after being called up from the President’s team. Season 2016-17 saw Harry elevated to captain of the Moore Shield team with great maturity and success.

Since joining the Gymea Bay Cricket Club, Harry’s game has flourished as he continues to improve all aspects of his cricket. This season has rewarded Goldy with consistent performances scoring over 565 runs at an average of 94.17 from just seven innings. His season starting knock of 48 would prove to be his lowest total for the season. His patience and his ability to anchor an innings would build towards his competition topping 135 in the final round.

While his batting matured, so did his attitude in the field and around the team. The stats don’t show Goldy’s ability to lift his teammates: his energy in the field, and his commitment to the team as a whole. Constant encouragement of the bowlers could be heard from the boundary, an intoxicating and uplifting energy which infected all those around him. He continued his great form with the bat in the final, top scoring with 49, again playing the anchor role to which we have all grown accustomed. His commitment to improving his game and his team attitude will see Goldy earn himself many more accolades in the years to come.

MAX ROBINSON

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Max Robinson from the Cronulla Seagulls Cricket Club has won the award for BEST PERFORMANCE in 12A.

Max had a very memorable and successful 2016/17 season, following on from impressive displays in previous seasons at both club and representative level. He is a very mature, level-headed young man whose temperament allows him to perform at a high level no matter the state of the match. Max was a major part of the Cronulla Seagulls 12A team which has won the premiership for the past 2 seasons, he was awarded the vice-captaincy for this season and did a fantastic job in this role.

Max’s record for this season was tremendous, on most occasions he opened the batting and managed a total of 434 runs at an average of 62. After going past the 50 mark on a few occasions Max successfully completed his first century, a wonderful innings of 100 not out. Max also passed 50 on 3 other occasions. Max has spent countless hours working on his batting and his solid technique is a reflection of this hard work. He is starting to reap the benefits of his diligence and is capable of scoring freely on both sides of the wicket.

Not only has Max had an outstanding year with the bat but he has backed this up in the field. He took 2 wickets, 2 catches and also effected a run out. His fielding is always sound and his speed and agility is a valuable asset that he possesses. When you factor in his leadership role in the team you get an indication of the value that he adds to any side he is involved with.

Not only did Max have a successful club season but his representative career is also progressing nicely. After being a part of the Under 10 Development Squad, Max has been a member of the Creak and Cawsey Shield teams over the past two seasons and no doubt will be a backbone of future Sutherland teams.

All-in-all it was a wonderful season for Max and it was a pleasure to be involved with such a respectful, well-mannered young man. Well done Max and we look forward to watching you over many successful seasons in the future.

JONTE STARK-HARRIS

Andrew Hilditch Trophy For those who do not know Jonte, you would describe him as just a genuinely lovely young man. Jonte displays many favourable characteristics, and is unassuming upon first impressions. Jonte is kind, honest, gentle and polite, which makes him very likable to his peers. It is always a pleasure when Jonte is around. We as Coaches have been very privileged to be a part of this season, and as such, we will fondly reflect on it in the years to come.

Jonte has another attribute: He is a stunning sportsman. Jonte exhibits what some would say is a natural ability, but what most don’t see is all the hours of dedication, diligence and training, that justifies such a statement, as Jonte loves the game, and plays in the spirit. He is always curious as to gain any advantage to keep him out in the middle, or to dismiss the opposing team, with the ball or in the field.

We witnessed a stunning performance this season. Jonte has an awesome bowling action, which is awe inspiring to watch. Such a bowling action is rare to see at any age. This resulted with 13 wickets for only 39 runs, an unbelievable average of 3.00! A delight to watch.

Also, Jonte can bat. He plays practically all the shots, which saw him rack up 190 runs, at an excellent average of 38.00. Jonte has a free, but concise batting style that is entertaining to watch. There is always a sense of quiet confidence in the camp when Jonte is out in the middle. Pace does not hinder Jonte, as he has learnt to play equally off both the front and back foot, and scores or defends appropriately.

Enjoy this moment Jonte, as those around you have been, by being around you this season. Cricket will not be your only gauge of success in the future, as you have all the attributes to be successful in any pursuit you endeavour.

Good on you Jonte, you deserve the acknowledgment, but your Coaches must thank the support crew around you. Thanks to Jonte’s Family; Darren, Myra and Rory, your team mates, their parents, and anyone else that has contributed over the years.

Once again well done Jonte.

Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association

Whilst many of the earlier Life Members have left us for that great cricket ground elsewhere (possibly called Lords) as can be seen below there are still amongst us those whose contributions aided immeasurably in the development and progress of the Association and growth of junior cricket.

Those who have been honoured by their peers with the status of “Life Member” It is a pleasure to record their

names in history and may they serve to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Life Members receive an Association badge the history of which started in 1968 when it was first introduced to

have a badge available for all members. Today it is reserved for Life Members.

SERVICE TO SHIRE JUNIOR CLUB CRICKET

Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association

- 75 -

In 2016 the SSJCA has introduced a new award, “Service to Shire Junior Club Cricket”, aimed at recognizing those

volunteers who over a lengthy period of time have made a significant contribution to junior cricket through their local club.

Through their dedication and service cricket in the Shire is in a much better position because of them.
