June 2013 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE My term as NHMTA President is fast approaching its conclusion. The past two years have gone by so rapidly that many things seem a blur. As an organization we are strong and active in all of our endeavors. We have maintained our membership and have welcomed new members as well. I must thank the NHMTA Board members for their help and guidance throughout my term, as we worked so well together in the interest of music making. Constance Chesebrough, Immediate Past President, was forever a guidance to me. She helped in numerous ways from relating past procedural information and history of events, to helping update the NHMTA website each year. Kathy Southworth, President-Elect, was always on call when I needed something immediately. She secured ads for our Yearbook and Newsletters, as well as Competition Sponsors for student winners in the Fall Competitions and the Granite State Competitions. She will be an excellent president and is looking forward to working with a new board and the membership. Jeannie Goodwin, Treasurer, brought the state's books into the 21st century by getting all the records into a computer software program. She was always on top of every bill and receipt and gave excellent summaries to the Board at each meeting. Lynne Wilby, Secretary, was always a delight to have on the Board as she took superb notes and kept good records of our meetings. I know the Board will be in good hands for the next two years with Lynne documenting everything. Maura Glennon, Vice-President for Programs, was responsible for the State Conference and organized a wonderful day for us. She secured Jane McGrath and oversaw all the sessions throughout the day. Maura was our Commissioned Composer Chair as well and will continue in this capacity. Meagan Maganti, Evaluations Chair, continues to serve in this capacity. Meagan knows the Evaluation program inside out and backwards, and cheerfully oversaw all four sites in the state, securing the plaques for the students. Jacqueline Morin took on the job of organizing and running the first ever NHMTA Fall Festival last November. Forty-two students participated and the event was a huge success. Jackie will now be the new Vice-President for Membership as well, and we look forward to her continued work on the Board. Marie Mendelow, Vice-President for Membership, worked on securing new members and continued work on maintaining our membership. Marie's sense of humor always was a pleasant addition to every meeting. The new Board members for 2013-2015 will bring a variety of expertise to the Board. Lisa Cleveland is returning for another term as President-Elect and will bring a wealth of NHMTA knowledge to the organization. Rebecca VerPlanck will be the new Treasurer and is excited to be a part of the Board. Pamela Quirinale will join the Board as Vice-President for Programs and will be planning the next state conference for October 2014. Please know that the Board members would like to involve more of the membership in helping with all our programs. Please contact Kathy Southworth if you feel you can contribute time and effort for the betterment of our organization. Thank you for working with me these past two years. I look forward to being a part of the history of NHMTA as I serve my final two years as Immediate-Past President. I know the organization is in good hands. Carleen Graff NHMTA President

FALL FESTIVAL – November 9, 2013

The purpose of the Fall Festival is to provide an opportunity for students to perform in a non-competitive setting and receive positive critiques from NHMTA teacher-members. Each year a special focus will be chosen, such as style period, composer, or genre. By playing in a recital setting, students will be exposed to a variety of repertoire and to other students playing similar compositions.

The theme for the 2013 Fall Festival is Sonatinas/Sonatas. The Festival will be held at the Concord Community Music School on November 9, 2013.

Application Rules: Applications must be postmarked on or before October 11, 2013.

1. All NHMTA members, including student members, may send students to

participate. All teachers entering students will be required to monitor or provide written critiques. Responsibilities will be divided among teachers.

teachers become a member of NHMTA before the postmarked entry deadline.

“THE BRAIN AND MUSIC”

2013 Quad State Convention October 5, 2013

Corthell Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham

Saturday, October 5th 8:30-9:00 Registration/coffee 9:00-10:30 Robert Duke Keynote Address “Beautiful” 10:30-10:45 Break 10:45-12:00 Alan Wittenberg Presentation “The Brain and Music: An Essential Tool for Growth and Development” 12:00-1:30 Lunch 1:45-3:00 Panel Discussion with Robert Duke, Alan Wittenberg, Dr. Richard Sullivan & Marcel Hebert 3:00-3:30 Break 3:30-4:00 Commissioned Composer Concert

DESCRIPTIONS

“Beautiful” by Robert Duke Changes in the functional capacities of learners are visible manifestations of changes in the physical structure of the brain. Although we seldom think of learning experiences as brain-reorganization activities, they most certainly are precisely that. We will discuss the reasons why formal education often fails to make substantive and lasting changes in how learners think and behave, and we'll consider how to design learning experiences that lead to advantageous changes in cognition, affect, and behavior, all of which are components of expertise in every discipline. “The Brain and Music: and Essential Tool for Growth and Development” with Alan Wittenberg Music and the brain is a field that has attracted growing interest from a wide range of professionals as well as the general public. As music professionals we are apt to see children or adults with impairments, disabilities and delays. The research done on music and the brain and its application to the filed of music therapy as well as music education is relevant and meaningful. The presentation will reference the work of leaders in the field via discussion, video illustrations and Q&A. Panel Discussion Will include Robert Duke, Alan Wittenberg, Dr. Richard Sullivan (neurologist at Maine Medical Center and amature musician) and Marcel Hebert (professional musician and member of Brain Injury Voices).

Since 1982, Alan pioneered the field of music therapy and implemented innovative programs in Maine, Japan, Russia and France, consulting extensively with universities, hospitals, mental health institutes, centers for the elderly, as well as school and preschool programs. Since 2004 Alan developed and taught the first university level music therapy courses offered in Maine as adjunct faculty for the University of Maine System and Husson University. His mission since 1982 has been to bring the power and beauty of music therapy to those who would have little or no access to it in Maine, and to support the development of music therapy in clinical, medical, rehabilitative, developmental and geriatric setting in Maine and internationally.

Dear Friend in the Music Industry: June 15, 2013 The New Hampshire Music Teachers Association (NHMTA), a state affiliate of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), would like to offer you the opportunity to advertise in our 2012-2013 publications. By advertising with us, you will be targeting the most receptive and desirable market for music products in New Hampshire. Your advertisement will appear in our Yearbook as well as three Newsletters, all of which will be published between September 1, 2013 and August 31, 2014, in order to coincide with the academic year. The Newsletter, The New Hampshire Music Teacher, will be in hard copy but also will appear on our website. Your ads will now have the option of including an online link to your website or email address. The Newsletter will reach nearly 150 readers, including teachers, students, and music schools. The NHMTA Yearbook will be mailed in September and will be published on our website www.nhmta.net. This manual for all NHMTA members contains information that teachers continually refer to throughout the year. Payment for advertisements for the Yearbook and Newsletters, as well as a copy of your advertisement, must be received no later than August 15, 2013. Electronic ads should be emailed in JPG, GIF or PNG files to [email protected]. Business cards and any other camera-ready ads should be mailed with the advertising form and check. NHMTA takes no responsibility for the print quality of ads that are not submitted electronically. If you wish to participate, please mail the form below with a check made payable to NHMTA to the following address:

Lisa Cleveland, 5 Southfield Drive, Nashua, NH 03064 [email protected]

Thank you for participating in our advertising program and for supporting the study of music in New Hampshire. Sincerely, Kathryn Southworth NHMTA President-Elect www.nhmta.net ************************************************************************************************************
