2 April 11-12, 2020 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church
This is a strange Easter. No gathering for Mass. No dinner with extended family. It is diffi cult this year to enter into the
joy of Easter. In seminary, we often used the term “already but not yet.” The Kingdom of God is already established. Jesus has already completely won the victory over sin and death. We know that this is true. But, although the Kingdom is already established, we do not yet see its glory. The victory that Christ has already won is not fully realized in all of creation.
This Easter is an “already but not yet” experience. Christ is risen, but we still live in the midst of death. We know the joy of the Resurrection, but we also still experience the sorrow of this world.
And that is why we need Easter this year more than ever. We need a reminder that the death and sorrow in the world do not have the victory. This is not a naïve optimism or a denial of the real suffering that people experience. As Christians, we do not deny the reality of the Cross. But we know that the Cross is not the end of the story.
We have just fi nished a very diffi cult, very different Lent. We have lived Lent differently this year than in years past. Now we enter into the Easter season. Easter is not just one day, but fi fty days of joy. But, like Lent, Easter will look different this year. How will you celebrate the joy of the Resurrection during this Easter season? Each year, we put a lot of thought into how we will observe Lent. But we rarely put much thought or effort into celebrating Easter. We should be just as intentional with how we celebrate the Easter season as we are with Lent.
How will you observe Easter this year? How will you make this a time of sharing the joy of the Resurrection? How will you live in the Kingdom of God that is already established? And how, during this Easter season, can you help to spread the Kingdom of God, so that it becomes more real in our world?
From the Pastor / Noticias del PárrocoActivities This Weekare suspended per Mandate
of the Archbishop
There will be no public Masses until further notice.
Archbishop Carlson has dispensed all Catholics in the Archdiocese from the obligation of attending Mass on Sundays until further notice.
All group services, Bible studies and activities are still suspended.
For now, the church is to remain open for personal prayer and confessions. Baptisms, weddings, and funerals may continue if immediate family only are in attendance.
Fr. Dotson will be working with families that this may affect regarding these sacraments and rites.
Please remember your offering to the church during this time.
Our "weekend collection" is half of its normal amount, and many of our expenses remain the same.
You can mail your contributions to the Parish Offi ce (601 N. Fourth St., St. Charles, MO 63301) or enroll in online giving through Faith Direct at http://faith.direct/MO903.
Thank you for your support of the parish.
We will continue to keep you updated as the situation changes both by email and through our Facebook Page: facebook.com/Borromeo1791.
The Archdiocese has updates and resources on its website as well: archstl.org/coronavirus.
Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you and your families during this time.

Please Prayerfully Consider Making a Contribution to our Parish!
Without weekend Masses, we have seen a signifi cant decrease in our parish contributions. Meanwhile, many of our expenses remain the same.
We recognize that this is a fi nancially diffi cult time for many people due to loss of income.
However, if you are able to contribute to the parish, we greatly appreciate it. To donate online, visit http://faith.direct/mo903 or mail your contributions to the Parish Offi ce (601 N. Fourth Street, 63301).
¡Con oración, considere hacer una contribución
a nuestra parroquia!
63301).
Keep Sending Us Your Individual or Family Photos!
Even though there are no parishioners physically present at our Masses at the moment, every Mass is being offered for our parishioners, and we are spiritually united. To remind us of that, we are asking parishioners to send us photos of themselves or their families. The photos will be printed and displayed in the chapel where Mass is being celebrated. Please send an individual headshot or family photo to [email protected].

Food Donations for Area Families in Need
The Neighbor Helping Neighbor Service Coalition
is distributing food to families from the City of St. Charles and Francis Howell
school districts, supplying two bags of food for each vulnerable family a week.
Families are referred by school counselors in the districts and receive their food through drive-through or drop-off options that follow safety protocols.
WE NEED YOUR HELP with a sustained supply of food each week: peanut butter, jelly, pancake mix & syrup, cookies, granola bars, canned goods, rice, pasta & pasta sauce, Hamburger Helper, mac & cheese, oatmeal.
Food can be dropped off at the collection site at Calvary Church, 3998 Mid Rivers Mall Drive (follow the signs to the drop-off location on the north side of the building).
If you would rather make a fi nancial donation, the St. Charles Borromeo St. Vincent de Paul can shop for you. If you can help, contact Joyce Cain at 636-448-2021.

4 April 11-12, 2020 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church
Today we begin the Easter Season, our 50-day meditation on the mystery of
Christ's Resurrection. Our Gospel today tells us about the disciples' discovery of the empty tomb. It concludes by telling us that they did not yet understand that Jesus had risen from the dead. Thus, the details provided are not necessarily meant to offer proof of the Resurrection. The details invite us to refl ect upon a most amazing gift, that is faith in Jesus and his Resurrection.
Each of the four Gospels tells us that Jesus's empty tomb was fi rst discovered by women. This is notable because in fi rst-century Jewish society women could not serve as legal witnesses.
In the case of John's Gospel, the only woman attending the tomb is Mary of Magdala. Unlike the Synoptic accounts, John's Gospel does not describe an appearance of angels at the tomb. Instead, Mary is simply said to have observed that the stone that had sealed the tomb had been moved, and she runs to alert Simon Peter and the beloved disciple. Her statement to them is telling. She assumes that Jesus's body has been removed,
perhaps stolen. She does not consider that Jesus has been raised from the dead.
Simon Peter and the beloved disciple race to the tomb, presumably to verify Mary's report.
The beloved disciple arrives fi rst but does not enter the tomb until after Simon Peter. This detail paints a vivid picture, as does the detail provided about the burial cloths. Some scholars believe that the presence of the burial cloths in the tomb offers evidence to the listener that Jesus's body had not been stolen (it is understood that grave robbers would have taken
the burial cloths together with the body).
The Gospel passage concludes, however, that even having seen the empty tomb and the burial cloths, the disciples do not yet understand about the Resurrection.
In the passage that follows, Mary of Magdala meets Jesus but mistakes him for the gardener. In the weeks ahead, the Gospel readings from our liturgy will show us how the disciples came to believe in Jesus's Resurrection through his appearances to them. Our Easter faith is based on their witness to both the empty tomb and their continuing relationship with Jesus—in his appearances and in his gift of the Holy Spirit.

Because of the uncertainty of our return to regular public Masses, we are not taking any new Mass intentions at this time.
We will publish a Mass list online and send out the link as soon as we can reschedule these Masses (and after we return to our regular public Masses).
