The patients of The Oakes experience a secure environment, designed mindfully for those suffering from severe depression which may also include a diagnosis of dementia. We use proven methods to help patients such as social group interaction, reality orientation, sensory stimulation, recreation and self-expression.
Our patients benefit from group therapy and each enjoys a private room which includes equipment to aid in easy movement and accessibility.
In addition to state-of-the-art facilities, our team includes a medical director, board certified physicians, social workers, nurses and a chaplain. Our 24-hour nursing care allows for personalized attention to all patients to meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

WHEN TO REFER
The staff of The Oakes is sensitive to the frustration families feel when a loved one is struggling with depression and mental illness. It has been our mission to treat patients for over 30 years, and we will continue this mission of providing care to those individuals in an environment where their condition is best understood.
When a person becomes disoriented, confused and agitated or is exhibiting moderate to severe neurocognitive functional impairment (excluding brain injury or mental retardation) it is time to call one of our counselors for an assessment. The Oakes is designed to treat those with or without concurrent medical issues, as well as those who need more assistance because of physical challenges.
If you would like an assessment please call 601-200-3090 or 1-800-632-5907.

RECREATIONAL THERAPY
Recreational programs promote quality of life by providing an appropriate level of stimulation using meaningful activities. The effectiveness of recreational activities is valuable in addition to pharmacological therapies for reducing behavioral symptoms. Our therapists utilize a wide range of interventions and techniques to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, social and leisure needs of their patients.
Pet Therapy • Provided weekly with geriatric patients at The Oakes. • A guided interaction between a specially trained animal and an individual or group, facilitated by the animal’s handler. • Improves patients’ mental, social, emotional and physical functions. • Improves a person’s mental status by increasing socialization, behavior and motivation, or by providing a sense of purpose. • Infl uences prosocial behaviors such as interaction, pleasure and smiling in patients.
Music Therapy • Provided daily as a key part of The Oakes program. • Helps to stimulate seemingly lost memories and help maintain some cognitive functioning. • Helps stimulate communication and memory skills. • Benefi ts include memory recall, positive changes in moods, a sense of control over life, non-pharmacological management of pain and discomfort, stimulation that promotes interest even when other approaches are ineffective.
Activity Therapy • Provided daily as a valuable component of The Oakes program. • Reduces agitation, anxiety, depression and anger. • Can reduce sundowning behavior. • Benefi ts include increased socialization, increased concentration, improved self-concept and increased alertness.
Pastoral Counseling • Provided daily as a unique part of The Oakes program. • Our trained Chaplain, with a genuine posture of humility, accompanies each individual through issues related to their illness and provides meaningful support to the person. • Reduces sense of isolation and helps a patient fi nd their own internal sense of comfort, balance, and strength.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) • St. Dominic’s is a top provider in the state of Mississippi offering both inpatient and outpatient ECT. • Patients who have not had success with other treatment options may benefi t. • ECT is administered at the main hospital campus to ensure the highest quality of care.
