December 2017 Mt. Carmel Baptist Church - THE COURIER
A Word from the Pastor
Dear Church Family, Merry Christmas to you, one and all. May 2018 be the very best year of your life and the life of our church. During this advent season, as we reflect upon the coming of Christ Jesus our Lord into the world, let us not forget the words of Paul to Timothy, and ulti-mately, to us as well, “Here is a trust-worthy saying that deserves full ac-ceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” (I Timothy 1:15) Christmas is not about things; it is about the love of God come to earth to rescue us from what we have done and are doing to ourselves and to each oth-er in our ignorance and unbelief. All of us lament what we see in and around us each day: the inhumanity of man, selfishness, insensitivity to others, meanness, violence, and the like. We often say, “Why doesn’t God do some-thing about this?” But, He has! He has
provided us a Savior in His Son. His Son has paid the penalty for our sins. Moreover, Jesus has provided us His Holy Spirit to comfort, guide, protect, and empower, as well as many more blessings. This is good news! The Gospel of Jesus saves! We must receive it, believe it, embrace it, live it, and share it. The Gospel is the only hope of the world. It works powerfully if we share it wisely. Let us all make evangelism priority one in our lives and in our church. It is God’s solution to the evils and ills of our world. It is sad we don’t apply it as we should. The Gospel is, in fact, the one gift that keeps on giving! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year,
Lance

available in the student center beginning Wednesday, Decem-ber 6. Make sure to reserve Sunday, March 4 on your fam-ily calendar for this year’s Dessert Auction. It and the Basket Auction are the prima-ry 2018 ‘FUGE fundraisers. Several other great opportuni-ties to connect with God, friends and leaders who really care are listed below. Most importantly this December, spend time with God each day…you won’t regret it! And, read larger chunks of scrip-ture; not less. Love in action is what Christmas is all about; the dad who surprises you with one last gift; the mom who knows just what you want for Christmas dinner, and children, overflowing with Thanksgiving gratitude, doing their part to make Christmas morning great! As we celebrate Jesus’ arrival, it is but mere prelude to His ultimate mis-sion…taking upon himself, through death on a cross, the trespasses of us all. And, all this so that people like you and I might have abundant
life. “Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!” I pray for you a wonderful December, a hap-py new year and a wonderful month to celebrate Jesus.
Jeff
At the time of this writing, Thanksgiving is still a few days away. I’m excited to see fami-ly, friends and spend more than a few days in Charlotte. I hope yours was truly a grate-ful blast! Looking into December, I believe it can be a month filled with hope, joy, expectation, meaning and, yes, adventure. But, it’s going to take some trust. Let us give, I mean really give, our hearts to Jesus. He is both suffering servant and babe lying in a manger. Before ‘wrapping’ up with some specific Christmas hopes and reminders, I should probably spend some time pre-paring us all for some future Youth Ministry opportunities. The annual Christmas Party and White Elephant Gift Ex-change has been scheduled for 5:30pm, Sunday night, December 10. Make sure to bring a healthy appetite, wrapped/bagged gift and a few friends with you. Registration for ‘FUGE 2018 begins Wednesday night, December 6. There will be plenty of ‘FUGE information sheets

One of my favorite Sun-days at Mt. Carmel is the day we have the Operation Christ-mas Child gifts (boxes) being brought to the front of the church by children and adults. It takes quite a while, because there are so many! We thank you so much for your participation and your gifts! What a blessing to be a part of something that spreads the Word of God throughout the world! Our total this year is 776. Wow! Thanks, especial-ly, goes to Julie Cummins and her outstanding leadership in our church and community for this great ministry. As we look forward to the Christmas season, there are many ways you can come and participate and worship at Mt. Carmel. The Hanging of the Green will be held on Sunday, December 3rd. Sandwiches, sides, and sweets will be at 5:00pm, and then the fun be-gins! The children’s and adult choirs will sing, and there is
lots of crowd participation. The decorating of the church will go on in the midst of all the celebrating. It is a great evening, and our crowds get bigger every year...because it is fun for all ages! Our yearly food drive is go-ing on now through December 3rd. Our children and students do a great job of spear-heading this event, along with our local fire department. Thank you for your generous donations! Christmas cookies are a fa-vorite to bake and eat. The Women’s Ministry is holding their cookie exchange again this year on December 5th at 6:30pm. Please bring three dozen homemade cookies to exchange. Come and enjoy! Our Christmas Concert will be held on Sunday, December 17th at 6:00pm. Please join us for this wonderful evening of worship as Jamie Holdren leads our choirs and orchestra. In-vite your friends and neighbors as Mt. Carmel celebrates our
Lord’s birth with music. You will be blessed! Our Christmas Eve Can-dlelight Service will be held, of course, on Christmas Eve. I always say some events we do at Mt. Carmel are my fa-vorites, but this night truly is! We will gather as a family at 5:00pm to hear scripture read and carols sung...and to hear the wonderful sounds of chil-dren filled with wonder and excitement! It really is a great time to be together. Invite your friends and family to this special service. You can also have your family pictures taken around our glorious tree! Merry Christmas! Connie
