Once again we would like to extend a Welcome to the Mappin Simmentals / Silver Smith Farms Annual Bull Sale. When our Purebred Adventure began in 1992, we had no idea where it would take us-we simply wanted to improve our cowherd. We are passionate about improving our own herd and helping our customers improve their cowherds and their bottom lines through our bulls. This is our 15th continuous year of offering quality Red and Black Simmental genetics in our own sale, and our 2nd year hosting our sale at the farm. For those of you who attended the sale last year, thank you for toughing out a cold day. We have invested in more BTU’s and a more insulation for the barn so a warmer sale day awaits! This year we are offering a good mix of impressive new genetics as well as some very popular sire groups featured at our past few sales. These include sons of “Brooks”, and “Chief” and new groups from “Lotto” and “Rimmer”. Check out the reference sire footnotes for details. The bulls were weaned on Sept 16th and have been a very healthy group through weaning and the colder months. We work closely with our Vet and the bulls are on the Zoetis SelectVac Gold herd health protocol. All bulls will have passed a semen evaluation (no DD’s and no “check later”bulls); they be ready to work as of sale day. We feel strongly that part of our job as a seedstock producer is to offer exceptional reproduction genetics. As such, we utilize a VERY short 42 day breeding season – ensuring that our “bull makers” calve early, clean up and breed back on the tightest of schedules. No second chances in a ‘year round’ calving program here. We believe this means you get a bull with the best reproductive potential possible, and we think that is vitally important to all cattlemen. You may notice we again decided not to include EPD’s in this year’s edition. We continue to be of the opinion that the actual information, birth weight (we own a calf scale and use it!), weaning weight, and weight per day of age (to weaning) that is provided for each bull in the offering is as true of a guide as we can expect from a yearling bull, and much more accurate in ‘the real world’. Every animal listed is registered so please feel free to search the CSA pedigree registry for each animal’s EPD’s if you feel that helps you make a better decision. Or better yet, come to the farm prior to sale day and view the momma’s of the bulls, and the herd sires, so you can see for yourself important real world traits such as structure, udder quality and disposition. This past summer we hired a feed nutritionist to help us balance rations for our entire cattle operation. We feel strongly about the need for proper mineral and vitamin inclusion rates so we enlisted an expert. His advice has resulted not only in custom blended mineral packages

for each class of cattle, but being able to rely on gains from our own high quality forage. This year’s bulls are being developed on a “Super Oat” silage, cut hay and a modest amount of rolled grains. You may notice the bulls looking a touch fresher this year which is what we are aiming for. We think this will improve the longevity of the bulls and add value to your purchase. March 7th is coming quickly. We were fortunate enough to be one of the progressive breeders to buy a semen package from MI Simmentals, Brook’s new owner in the spring of 2017. We went and toured Bob Anderson’s good bull pen and noticed Chief right off- Deep blood red, huge testicles and deep sided, big black feet, with great calving numbers and good performance as well. He did well and looked good doing it. A red bull some chrome on his face and built like the Steakhouse calves. Typically smaller at birth with loads of grow.

• Mothered by a super good cherry red, blaze faced Cow Boss daughter who is a rising star in the cowherd. This cows mother, 54U is an excellent cherry red, blaze faced cow who is extremely sound, functional, attractive and productive. • Blue is Rare is a March 1 baby who has done his best to keep up with his older penmates. The 2018 breeding season we were plagued with injured herdbulls-Steakhouse started out, got hurt a few weeks in, was pulled in to heal for a couple of weeks, then had to go out again to finish off in another group of cows. Blue is Rare is a red bull with some chrome, and may be the sleeper in the pen.

• Mothered by a very moderate framed, belly dragging 2nd calver. Excellent productive cow family who are very sound uddered and footed. Her mother, 28U was a good producer for us and was just shipped last fall due to personality conflict with management-there can only be one boss cow in our operation and she wasn’t it! 28D is bred back for a January calf this year and holds her condition well.

Terms: The terms of this sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattlewill be released. Payment due in Canadian Dollars.Bid: Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No private sales will be allowed except as otherwise provided for in the terms and conditions. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.Disputes: In some cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid.The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.Purchaser’s risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time.Announcements: Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Bidders are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.Certificate of registry: The proper registration or recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after the settlement has been made.Breeders Guarantee: Should any bull fifteen months of age or older fail to prove a natural breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders and free of any venereal disease, the buyer shall report in writing to the seller and provide a report of a complete examination by a qualified veterinarian. This notification shall be provided to the seller no later than four (4) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fifteen (15) months of age, whichever is later. The buyer shall return the bull to the seller at the buyer’s expense. The seller shall have the opportunity to have the bull examined by the veterinarian of his

choice. In the instance of a fertility re-test by the seller the bull must weigh the same or more than his posted adjusted 365-day weight. If the bull falls short of his weight then he must be reconditioned to meet the weight and then re-tested. The seller will then have 45 days to prove this bull a breeder. If this bull proves to be a satisfactory breeder, the bull shall be returned to the buyer. In the event the seller fails to prove the bull a satisfactory breeder the buyer has the option to either accept a replacement F.O.B. the seller’s ranch or a credit equal in value to the actual purchase price. No incidental expenses such as feed, vet charges, interest, etc. will be charged by either party. In no event shall the seller be responsible for reimbursing more than the purchase price. All warranty and responsibility is limited to replacement of the bull in question and is acknowledged by the buyer as a condition of sale. No guarantee is given that the semen collected from the bull will be suitable for freezing and/or artificial insemination. Once the bull is in buyer’s possession, the Seller provides no guarantee to cover health issues which may include but are not limited to: illness, disease, malnutrition, injury or death. Exception to guarantee: In cases where the animal is subject to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void.Bull Semen retention: Mappin Simmentals reserve the right to collect semen on any bull sold for in herd use.
